Probe Your Soul with Questions

George Whitefield (1714–1770) was “the best-known evangelist of the eighteenth century and one of the

greatest itinerant preachers in the history of Protestantism.” Before he retired each night, he opened his

journal and probed his soul with questions such as these he’d placed in the flyleaf:

Have I,

1. Been fervent in prayer?

2. After or before every deliberate conversation or action, considered how it might tend to God’s glory?

3. After any pleasure, immediately given thanks?

4. Planned business for the day?

5. Been simple and recollected in everything?

6. Been meek, cheerful, affable in everything I said or did?

7. Been proud, vain, unchaste, or enviable of others?

8. Recollected in eating and drinking? Thankful? Temperate in sleep?

9. Thought or spoken unkindly of anyone?

10. Confessed all sins?

A more famous contemporary of Whitefield’s, Jonathan Edwards, compiled a list of resolutions that is still

widely circulated. Posted in his journal for frequent review, they were his lifelong spiritual goals and priorities.

What isn’t as well-known about these resolutions is that Edwards regularly evaluated himself against them

and recorded the results in his journal.

Due in no small part to these continual, soul-searching inquiries, Whitefield and Edwards became increas-

ingly conformed to Christ-likeness in life and character.

While I heartily recommend this practice of Whitefield and Edwards (and of countless others throughout

church history), there are other ways to use questions like these. For instance, in addition to your individual

spirituality you could also ask yourself specifically about your marriage and family life, work, Internet habits,

financial stewardship, or any other area of life where frequent reminders to obedience would help. Several

years ago, I used a similar method to remind myself not only of previous commitments, but to cultivate some

new habits as well. If you develop a long list of questions, you might review a small number daily rather than

the entire list.

The Bible directs each of us to “examine himself” before taking the Lord’s Supper (1 Corinthians 11:28).

Similarly, 2 Corinthians 13:5 instructs us, “Examine yourselves as to whether you are in the faith. Prove your-

selves.” Using an established series of soul-probing questions can simplify the ongoing process of obedience to

such commands, and make it easier for us to keep short accounts with God.

Trunks & Treats - October 26 (5:00 - 7:00) Trunks and Treats is a church sponsored event scheduled for

October 26 in the back church parking lot. This is a fun event

where you can bring your children in their best costumes and

invite your neighbors to enjoy an evening of decorated trunks

and treats! What a fun way to fellowship with your ABF class

cook out. Stop by the Trunks and Treats display poster in the

lobby to sign up for a parking lot space.

The number one predictor of a person’s spiritual health is whether or not they read the Bible

on a daily basis. However…

Only 16% of people who regularly attend church read the Bible daily.

Only 32% of people who regularly attend church read the Bible at least once a week.

That means more than half of the people who regularly attend church do not read the

Bible consistently.

When asked about the importance of reading the Bible on a consistent basis, Southern

Baptist IMB President David Platt responded, “The Bible contains one grand story of one

global God who is saving His people through one glorious gospel. We need to know this

story. We need to see, understand, and comprehend how all of the pages come together in

one overarching plot. Such knowledge, penetrating both our hearts and our minds, is es-

sential for growing in Christlikeness.”

GIC – What Now?

I would like to say “Thank you” to each of you who participated in our GIC in any way and especially to you who hosted a missionary in your home. The missionaries have complimented you over and over. They complimented you on how well they were treated, fed and loved on. Some of these missionaries had real needs that were met by some of you and your respective ABF & Life Groups. One of the missionaries commented about how he had a very specific need and he was praising God that it was met this past weekend. I can-not say “Thank You” enough for all you did to make our GIC a success. Many of you have also expressed that it was a great time of rubbing shoulders with those who have, as Levi did, “…left all and followed him.” (Luke 5) Some of you have told me about the blessings you received for your efforts this week. I think this comment from one of our members expresses what I am trying to say:

What a cool family and awesome opportunity to minister… and love on them this past weekend. I know we had a few communication hiccups connecting with them, but it all came together... God worked it out... (as if I should have doubted that He would). I’m always amazed and humbled at what missions is, looks like and the people that

passionately serve whereever called. Our missionaries embodied that and I was very glad to have the opportunity to spend some time with them this week.

Just wanted to let you know that things came together pretty well and thanks for letting us be a part of it.

Now that our 2014 GIC is past, how can we be involved in the lives of those who were with us? Let me mention a few ways.

1. Be sure to read the weekly enewsletter. We will feature one of the missionaries and their ministries each month. You will know better how to pray for them.

2. Keep in contact with your missionary. This GIC weekend should have started a relationship(s) – not have ended one. It can get very lonely on the field and the missionaries can feel isolated. If you have a verse that speaks to you write a short note and share it with them. A note from you just may make someone’s day. Ask them how you can pray for them and after you do send a short note and let them know you did. 3. Ask the missionary if there is some small item you can send. If you cannot afford to

do this bring the invoice to the mission’s office and we will find the funds. The smallest acts of kindness can sometimes make a huge difference.

What now? Let’s be in contact with the ones to whom God has introduced us!

WORSHIP ARTS Prepositions of Worship

By: Dr. Ed Steele Although we use them multiple times daily in speech and other forms of communication, we rarely take time to consider the importance of prepositions in our language. They function to show the relationship of one thing to another. We can take advantage of these little words to help us gain insight into our relationship to Christ in regards to worship. This is provided not as an exhaustive listing, nor as a theologi-cal treatise, but simply to help us refocus as we think and dialogue about worship. 1. To Him Worship is directed to Christ. “Now to Him who is able to do far more abundantly beyond all that we ask or think, according to the power that works within us, to Him be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations forever and ever. Amen.” [Ephesians 3:20-1] 2. In Him His Spirit lives in us and empowers us, the relationship that abides is that we are “in Him.” “For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.” [Acts 17:28] “Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.” [2 Corinthians 5:17] The fact that He is in us should continually lead us away from worshiping any other. 3. With Him He is present with us in worship. “For where two or three have gathered together in My name, I am there in their midst.” [Matthew 18:20]. He not only lives in us, there should be an awareness of His Spirit and presence as we worship. 4. For Him Worship is for Him. We exist for Him, as Paul stated, “yet for us there is but one God, the Father, from whom are all things and we ex-ist for Him; and one Lord, Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we exist through Him.” [1 Corinthians 8:6] Although worship has im-mense benefits for the worshipper, it is not for him, but for Christ. There is that sense that we are ministering to God as we worship. Our worship and ministry for Him is not because God needs it; He is self-sufficient. Our worship is that specific time in which we affirm His worthiness through obedience in recognizing that it is all for Him. One might say, “I go worship because I have needs and I want those needs to be met.” I believe I understand what is meant, but we must be careful. The goal of worship is not that my needs are met, but that we worship Christ. If we focus on “our needs,” then we have redi-rected our attention away from the very One who is able to do anything about those needs. But, as we focus on Christ and His greatness, love, mercy, grace and forgiveness in worship, somehow He works to minister to our needs. Christ’s ministry to us then, is a byproduct of worship and not the central focus. 5. About Him The subject of worship is Jesus. As Peter stood to deliver his sermon on the day of Pentecost found in Acts 2:14-36, the message from beginning to end was about Christ. Our message is to share how God from the beginning of history has moved to restore relationship with His creation through the death and resurrection of His Son. Even when threatened by the Council, Peter and John could only say, “we cannot stop speaking about what we have see and heard.” [Acts 4:20] 6. By Him In worship we acknowledge that all things were made by Him. “For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities all things have been created through Him and for Him.” [Colossians 1:16] 7. Through Him We are powerless to worship without His help. “Through Him then, let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is the fruit of lips that give thanks to His name.” [Hebrews 13:15] “All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being.” [John 1:3] “For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things. To Him be the glory forever. Amen.” [Romans 11:36] “He helps you want to obey Him and then help you do what He wants.” [Phil. 2:13 LB] Our times of worship can be laden with distractions. Perhaps a simple review of some prepositions might help us see Jesus Christ as the central focus of our corporate worship. As we gather for worship let’s remember that it is To Him, and In Him; it is With Him and For Him; it is About Him, By Him and Through Him! Worship centers itself, has its central focus, all on Jesus Christ. Anything less is less than wor-ship.

The Back PorchThe Back PorchThe Back PorchThe Back Porch The temperature had dropped to a perfectly not-too-cool 68 degrees. As the sun dipped below the horizon it started to splash vibrant orange and pink hues over the clouds. The sky itself was a deep Carolina blue. In my hands was a smoky dark roast coffee as black as night. We sat there on the back porch with good friends and enjoyed good conver-sation. We were just there in that moment, enjoying life together. It’s little moments like these that make up this life together that we are supposed to experience as brothers and sisters in Christ. It’s taking time to get to know someone. Having someone over for a meal. Being there during a crisis or praying for someone to find a job. It’s digging into the Word together, and it’s conversations for processing Biblical truths. It’s pushing a brother towards Christ even when he doesn’t feel like it. It’s soccer games and encouraging words and hugs during tragedies and celebrations and worshipping together. It’s life together. And as I sat on the back porch with these good friends, I realized that not everyone makes it to the back porch. Anyone can come to your front porch. Some people get invited inside to watch a ballgame or eat a meal. But few get invited through the house and out to the back where all there is to do is sit and talk and share and connect. It’s these very relationships that we need to be developing with one another in our church family. And they take work. It takes intentionality to give some-one else the gift of your time and preparation. But it’s these little gifts that will make a big impact in our lives and in the Kingdom. So who are you going to invite to your back porch?

IN OUR FELLOWSHIP Welcome New Members Stephen Ministry

People often ask, “What exactly is a Stephen Minister?” One way to put it is that Stephen Ministers are the After People.

Stephen Ministers are there: . . . after the phone call you hoped you’d never get. . . . after the divorce papers are served and the bottom falls out. . . . after you find a pink slip with your final paycheck. . . . after the doctor says, “I’m sorry, but there’s nothing more we can do.” Stephen Ministers are the “After People.” They are ready to come alongside you—or your friends, neighbors, coworkers, or relatives—and provide comfort and support for as long after as needed. Contact the church office if you or someone you know is interested in having a Stephen Minister or would like more information.

Articles for the November First Word are due in the church office by October 23.
