Breakout Chapel & the Game of Ur

At our last BibTheo Breakout Chapel we played one of the oldest games in the

world, The Royal Game of Ur (cf. Gen 11:31). The board pictured above is

housed at the British Museum in London, United Kingdom. Also known as the

Game of Twenty Squares, this particular game board was discovered in the

Royal Cemetery at Ur – hence the name – and is dated to c. 2600-2400 B.C.

Based on what we know about other ancient games such as Hounds and

Jackals, Senet, and Knossos, plus based on the way the Ur game board changed

its shape over time, we have inferred that Twenty Squares was a chase game

played similarly to the modern game Sorry! There are various hypotheses as to

the rules and even as to the pathway that the pieces took during gameplay. If

you want to learn more about the Game of Ur, or even play a free, online

version for yourself, go to BibleWoot.com/AncientGames. A cutout template of

the game board, pyramid dice, and game pieces is also attached on the

following page. If you color the attached game board, take a pic and post it to

Facebook or Twitter and then tag us, we’ll feature it in our next newsletter.

During last year’s breakout chapels we had: a guest speaker, a session on

Turabian basics, an archaeology presentation, and an ancient arts & crafts

session wherein we made replica cylinder seals, ostraca, & personalized

papyrus manuscripts. Potential ideas for future breakout chapels include more

arts & crafts; sessions on bible software (Logos & Accordance), a session on

word study or on research & writing in general; more guests; panel discussions;

and food demonstrations. What do you want from breakout chapel? Send your

idea to a DBT faculty member or tag us on Facebook or Twitter.
