AN ADDITION TO OUR ELDERSHIP We are thankful for Branyan Johnson, who was installed as an elder at Gloster Street this past Sunday, July 29, 2018. Branyan, Amanda, and Spencer are faithful and respected members of our church family, and we look forward to his leadership. Branyan joins elders Paul Callens, Monte Key, Gary Martin, James Segars, and Wayne Washington. Please pray for each of these good men as they oversee the work here.
TO GOD BE THE GLORY! This past Monday evening, July 30, two of our precious young people were baptized into Christ for the remission of their sins. Gabrielle and Carter Smith, daughter and son of Dennie & Janet Smith, were immersed and raised to “walk in newness of life” (Romans 6:4). We are truly thankful for both Gabrielle and Carter, and we are rejoice with them both over this wonderful decision. Please let them know how much you appreciate them. To God be the glory!

THE LOVE OF CHRIST
Chad Ramsey
Certain truths demand attention. Because it is easy for us to lose focus in our fast-paced world, we
need to be reminded that some matters are more important than others. Such is the case with regard to
the subject of Christ’s love. If anything is emphasized in Scripture, it is that both God and Jesus love
humanity. Concerning the love of the Father, Jesus declared: “For God so loved the world that He gave
His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life” (John
3:16). In his letter to the Romans, Paul likewise stressed the reality of God’s love and noted: “But God
demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans
5:9). And John beautifully wrote: “In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent
His Son to be the propitiation for our sins” (1 John 4:10).
The love of Christ is described in similar terms. Whatever understanding we might seem to have of
love, it is defined or refined by Jesus. Making this point, John stated: “By this we know love, because
He laid down His life for us. And we also ought to lay down our lives for the brethren” (1 John 3:16).
Essentially, Jesus sets the standard for us (John 15:13). We are challenged to follow His example as we
deal with one another (John 13:34). His love is both transformational and motivational. So Paul wrote:
“For the love of Christ urges us on” (2 Corinthians 5:14 NRSV).
As much as anything else, the love of Christ enables us to overcome the trials that we face in this
life. Emphasizing this, Paul addressed the Romans: “Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?
Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written:
‘For Your sake we are killed all day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.’ Yet in all these
things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us” (Romans 8:35-37).
To know the love of Christ is to know ultimate concern. His love teaches us that we are all valuable
in God’s eyes. No wonder Paul prayed for the Ephesians “to know the love of Christ which passes
knowledge” (Ephesians 3:19)!
