SUCCESSFUL YEAR FOR COURTNEYLast week, Courtney Webeck travelled to Perth to compete in the National All Schools Athletics Championships. Travelling to WA under a fitness cloud due to appendicitis two weeks earlier, Courtney qualified to run in the 800m. Despite this, Courtney ran last Friday and won a silver medal. What a great achievement!
While away in Perth, Courtney was also recognised for her achievements in the Combined High Schools (CHS) this year. Courtney received a Hunter School Sports Association Blue Award for both X-Country and Athletics. Throughout the year she won gold at the NSW CHS X-Country Championships and also won gold at the NSW CHS Athletics Championships in the 800m. In this event, she set a new CHS record.
Courtney was also awarded our GHS Female Sportsperson of the year at our recent presentation night.
What a great year from Courtney and a worthy recipient of these awards!

PRINCIPAL’S REPORTAs another school year draws to a close, I would like to thank our parents and community for the support they have given to our students, your children, to meet academic, social, emotional, cultural and physical outcomes. Our Annual Presentation Evening highlighted student achievements, reflected the investment and contribution from many community organisations in Gloucester (either in services, resources or financially) and the support from the P&C. Integral to this is the work behind the scenes; that our office staff, teacher support and student support officers, who ensure systems and processes run smoothly, compliance is met and student learning needs are met. It is the teachers who have the most contact with students. We work with your children 5 days a week, from 8:30 until 3:30 each day. I would like to thank the teachers for their commitment to our students and public education, and for providing them with many extra-curricular opportunities, to achieve remarkable outcomes, across a wide variety of fields, amidst ever increasing administrative demands and educational reforms. As I said at the Presentation Evening, the structure of a high school is very complex, I am very proud of our school and all that it offers our students and the wider community.
A few other highlights from the last couple of weeks:
• Macquarie University spoke to our senior students about university courses and life on campus. The Uni takes this Roadshow around the state and offers a Mac Laptop to three lucky students across the state. Congratulations to Natasha Murray in being one of these successful students.
• Sue Watts and Janine Phillips from The Sustainable Futures - Gloucester presented the school with a handmade banner by Dom Jacobs of the Uluru Statement; an agreement ratified by Aboriginal people. The Uluru Statement seeks to establish a Makarrata Commission (meaning “a coming together after a struggle, facing the facts of wrongs and living again in peace ... protection of Indigenous identity, language, law and culture… the recognition and restoration of rights to land”) to oversee agreement-making between the First Nations, Federal and State Governments.
• Courtney Webeck received a Combined High Schools Sporting Blue Award.
• Anthony Shultz is in England playing representative rugby union.
• Kayden Schumann has been selected in a representative team to play soccer in England next year.
• Year 9 students attended ‘Try a Trade’ – thank you to Mr de Angelis and community organisations who hosted our students during the day.
• Year 10 students attended Youth Mental Health First Aid – thank you to Miss Ribbons and Community Link Health Services.
• Our P&C has committed a substantial amount of money toward the air conditioning of the hall. On behalf of the students and teachers, I thank you for this generous offer and continued support within our school.
• Finalising the establishment of a specialised support class called a Multicategorical (MC) Class and the introduction of the class teacher Mrs Cathy Hoskins to staff and parents at an afternoon tea. Thank you to Mrs Cameron in coordinating the event.
We look forward to 2020 and the many successes it will bring our students through academic, social, cultural, physical and emotionally supportive experiences.
I wish the school community of Gloucester and the many organisations in town who support our students a safe and relaxing summer vacation with family and friends. Merry Christmas and happy 2020.

You will notice a few delicious additions for next year such as, Turkish melts and a variety of fresh or toasted sandwiches, wraps or salads. Look for specials posted out the front of the canteen during the week. If you have a food allergy, please call in and let me know and I will do my best to cater for you.
Helpers are always needed and very much appreciated. If you can spare a couple of hours each term or each month, please phone me on 6558 9963 or call into the canteen during the day for a chat. It is easy and you don’t have to be a cook you just need to serve drinks and ice creams at recess and lunch. Mums, Dads and grandparents welcome!
Wishing you all a very Merry and Safe Christmas Holidays.

PEER SUPPORT TRAININGYear 10 participated in two days of Peer Support Training in Week 7. The two days were really successful and students were enthusiastic and engaged. Students showed a lot of growth in their leadership skills and their ability to self-reflect.
Many students volunteered to become Peer Support Leaders in 2020 and had their first experience in managing Year 6 students on Orientation Day.
Thank you to the students and teachers involved in this valuable program.

YEAR 6 ORIENTATION DAYAn exciting and eventful day was had by all the Year 6 students transitioning to Gloucester High School in 2020. They were supported by Year 10 peer support students in their orienteering activities around the school and had classroom activities in the afternoon.
Many thanks to our peer support students and teachers who participated in these activities.

SCHOOLS SPECTACULAR 2019Everyone wants to be part of something bigger than themselves. This year Mrs Llewellyn and Zeke Llewellyn participated in the Schools Spectacular together with thousands of other students and teachers from around NSW. Zeke gained a position in the Orchestra playing Violin and Mrs Llewellyn participated in the creating of the show content, audition panels and Production Team for the show week in charge of 1,000 students moving to and from the stage. What a fantastic experience!

COSI AND ATYP DRAMA EXCURSIONOn Tuesday 3 December, 22 students from Year 9 and 11 Drama travelled to Sydney to attend a production of the play Cosi, the award winning play set in a “mental asylum” during the 1960s. The production was staged by Sydney Theatre, one of Australia’s most respected theatre companies, and featured some of the country’s best actors, including Lockie Leonard himself Sean Keenan. Students study cotemporary Australian Drama and have to write about how it might be staged, so it was useful to see how Australia’s best theatre practitioners interpreted the play. Students generally agreed that it was wonderfully acted, innovatively staged and very funny in parts.
Earlier in the day, students attended an acting workshop at the Australian Theatre for Young People (ATYP). Here they were fortunate to be tutored by a professional actor and NIDA graduate who facilitated improvisation exercises and character development.
A student attempted to fool the teacher into playing a Kanye West CD on the bus on the way home…but sadly failed. As usual the teacher was two steps ahead. Better luck next time.

VOLUNTEER READING PROGRAMGloucester community members have supported many students in the reading program throughout the year. This support provides students with the opportunity to have one on one tuition, reading and helping to build positive community connections and social skills. All students have developed fluency and comprehension strategies in this supportive environment and built confidence to read aloud. We would like to sincerely thank Mrs Vicki Coombes, Mrs Ashleigh Hickman, Mrs Valda Barron, Mrs Pam Hyatt and Mr Chris Pritchard for their contribution and commitment to this program. Thank you also to this team for providing additional support to students requiring special provisions for examinations.

CAREERS NEWSTry-A-Trade Day 2019Forty-eight Year 9 students participated in the 2019 Gloucester High School Try-A-Trade Day on Wednesday 4 December. The activities were organised so students could participate in ‘hands-on’ experiences. The students genuinely enjoyed the day and left very positive feedback in the surveys they completed at the end of the day.
Months ago, Year 9 students completed career activities which gave an indication of what kind of work students wanted to experience. Based on this information, local employers were contacted and arrangements were made to conduct the work placements on the day. The sessions allowed students to engage with professional workers within the industry, ask questions, perform basic tasks and/or observe the daily operations of a business. Some employers gave students a ‘tour’ of their facilities which created a very realistic view of how a particular business operates.
Most students were able to come back to GHS for a Free Sausage sizzle and soft drink. Thank you very much to Miss Donaldson and the SRC who did an amazing job cooking not only for Year 9, but also for the Year 6 students who were at GHS for an orientation day.
Try-A-Trade complements the Gloucester High School Careers program and provides present-day, realistic information so students can more successfully navigate their career path by making informed, planned and thoughtful decisions. It’s a great prelude to the Work Experience Program which will take place at the end of Term 1 2020. Many students will hopefully have a better idea of where they want to (or not want to) complete Work Experience next year.
This is a very unique opportunity and a privilege that is only possible due to the support from the local business community and volunteers. Gloucester High School would like to thank: Gloucester IGA, Circle of Friends, Gloucester Garden Centre, Jamie Andrews, Leveltec Engineering, Barrington Street Pre School and Long Day Care, Gloucester Pre School, Gloucester Soldiers Memorial Hospital, DRIFTA Camping Kitchens, Pure NRG, Bucketts Way Neighbourhood Group, Bucketts Radio 104.1FM, Ford Valley Motors, Gloucester Mower and Chainsaw Centre, Pioneer Fish Farm, Bowe and Lidbury, Richard Nicolaou Tiling and John Walton for making this day a huge success.

A TASTE OF UNIVERSITY AT GLOUCESTER HIGH SCHOOLThe Macquarie University Widening Participation LEAP program was an informative and motivational day for the Year 10 and 11 students. They were divided into groups and completed 5 separate activities. The students were engaged, answered questions, and were awarded prizes for their enthusiasm. Overall, the students developed a better understanding of the diverse ways to enrol in university and what university life would be like.
The Uni takes this Roadshow around the state and offers a Mac Laptop to three lucky students across the state. Congratulations to Natasha Murray who was one of the successful students.
Our school truly appreciates the time and efforts the Macquarie University staff dedicated to our students and community.

SUPPORT FOR PARENTS, YOUNG PEOPLE AND FAMILYSometimes we all need a bit of extra support and a bit of help.It is much better to ask for help than to struggle along by yourself. In fact, it takes real courage to seek support and it is wise to ask early before things get worse. Early support can help prevent more serious mental health conditions developing.
Students at Gloucester High now have access to additional support services through the Targeted Earlier Intervention (TEI) Program run by CatholicCare in Gloucester. A fully qualified Counsellor works within the school at times during the week and is available to assist students either at the school or at the CatholicCare office.
The Program also provides support for parents and carers who at times may be challenged by the role of parenting an adolescent.
The services offered are free of charge and are fully funded through the government. Any young person (10-18 yrs) or their parents/carers can access the service. The TEI Program operates throughout the whole year (during school terms and during school holidays) and is available over the Summer/ Christmas holiday period.
Counselling Services are confidential and any support needs are treated with sensitivity to individual needs.
