PRINCIPAL’S REPORTOnce again our students have excelled in a variety of fields. Brianna Martin was the zone winner of the Lions Youth of the Year Public Speaking. I had the privilege of attending the regional Lions Youth of the Year event in Newcastle to watch 5 young people present two unprepared speeches and one prepared speech. The candidates were all very confident and competent in their delivery and audience engagement. Congratulations to Brianna for reaching this level in the competition; you did Gloucester Lions Club and Gloucester High School proud.

Sarah Schiffmann competed in the International Cross Country Championships held in Denmark. At 15 years old she competed in the under 20 year’s category and achieved a commendable 42nd placing. Congratulations Sarah, we are all looking forward to hearing about your travels and success in Denmark when you return.

This week our Transition Program commenced. We had parents and students from Years 5 and 6 visit the school for a brief introduction to high school life and a tour of the classrooms. Throughout the year we will be hosting more events for both students and parents.

A number of our students are competing at the Gloucester Show this weekend. Our Agriculture team have spent the last few weeks preparing cattle for the event and the Hospitality/Food Technology students have decorated birthday cakes in amazingly creative designs based on the theme of ‘Bees’. We wish all competitors well in these events.

Last weekend GHS was host to the Sustainable Futures Convention. Over 200 people attended each day, with over 50 presenters (international, national and local) either as panel members or facilitating workshops. A number of past and present students spoke and performed at the event. The convention was based on Australia Remade – creating the best version of ourselves. The 9 Pillars focus on:

A First People’s Heart; a natural world for now and the future; an economy for the people; a society where all contributions count and every job has dignity; a diversity of people living side by side; a country of flourishing communities; a new dawn for women; a thriving democracy and a proud contributor to a just world.

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT continued...It is this last pillar that resonates more strongly with the presentation today. It is our individual and collective responsibility to educate ourselves and others of local and global issues and respond accordingly to our conscience and ability to support humanitarian justice.

Each one of these pillars can be linked to the variety of syllabi offered at our school. It underpins the Wellbeing Framework which is one of the recent reforms from the Department of Education.

Leading on from this event and related to Year 10 History and Stage 6 Legal Studies, we are most fortunate to have Stephen Rapp – an American lawyer and former United States Ambassador at Large for War Crimes Issues in the Office of Global Criminal Justice under Barrack Obama, speak with our students on global genocide and his involvement in the prosecution of individuals who committed crimes against humanity. We also had Mayee Warren, who has served in international courts in Africa, Asia and Europe and now lives in Gloucester. Mayee is passionate about preventing violence against women and children and is an avid campaigner to end modern day slavery. Mayee is also a lawyer and during retirement continues her work with the United Nations and lectures at the University of Sydney.

Even though we are located in a relatively small rural town, our students are provided with amazing opportunities that are provided by the school or groups within our community.

On behalf of all staff at GHS I wish everyone a safe and enjoyable holiday.Mrs Trudi Edman, Principal

SUSTAINABLE FUTURES CONVENTION 2019On the weekend of March 30/31, more than 220 people gathered at Gloucester High School to dream together the Australia of the future at the 3rd Sustainable Futures Convention. Based on the 9 Pillars of Australia Remade, the weekend was a resounding success with an overwhelming positive response.

The convention opened on Sat morning with a welcome to country from Uncle Ken Eveleigh followed by traditional dance by the Waang Djarii Dancers with Jeremy Saunders. In addition to the more than 30 workshops on offer, there were a number of panel discussions:• Walking Together – A First People’s Heart• The Echo of Young Voices – What are we demanding? How do we take action?• A Just World – Advocating and building a safer, more peaceful and united globe

Sunday morning launched straight into a session on Active Hope, encouraging participants to explore deeply the ingredients needed for making good in the world and how to acknowledge and create hope.

The banners that describe the 9 pillars have been gifted to the school and will serve to remind us of hope in action. There has already been talk of several projects emerging from the weekend, and we hope to integrate the message of the 9 Pillars into the school framework as it aligns well with our curriculum.

Late in February, as a lead up to the Convention, Ann Porcino from Australia Remade and Kerry Hartigan for the Jeder Institute facilitated a workshop with the SRC around creating the best version of us within the 9 Pillar Framework of Australia Remade. The conversations that emerged were courageous, inclusive and wise and left the facilitators feeling that the world is very safe in the hands of the youth of today. Some of the notes from this discussion are included here:

NAPLAN 2019NAPLAN is happening Term 2, Week 3 at GHS.

Students in Year 7 and Year 9 will complete the NAPLAN Online tests starting on 14 May. NAPLAN Online tests for Writing, Reading, Conventions of Language and Numeracy will take place over the week, with a catch-up day to follow for any students who are absent.

To see the types of questions and interactive features of NAPLAN Online, visit the public demonstration site. Click the following link for further information NAPLAN online information brochure for parents and carers

Students with a significant intellectual and/or functional disability may be exempt from participating in NAPLAN. All other students are expected to participate in NAPLAN and disability adjustments may be made to support individual students.

Some students have been identified by staff as requiring adjustments to enable access to NAPLAN on an equivalent basis to their peers. These adjustments will reflect the kind of support and assistance provided for assessment in the classroom. These students will be given a consent form to be filled out by parents and return it to school by the end of Term1.

If you have any questions concerning adjustments for your child, please contact Margo Cameron (Learning and Support Coordinator) at GHS on 6558 1605.

SCHOOLS SPECTACULAR CREATIVE TEAM LOCKUPDuring Week 10 Gloucester High School teacher, Mrs Laura Llewellyn, had the chance to take part in an exciting professional development opportunity when she was selected to attend the Schools Spectacular Creative Team Lockup alongside the key directors from The NSW Arts Unit.

During this time the teams aim was to crack the back of the show and formulate the majority of the creative content. This included the music selections, segment concepts, thematic directions, new initiatives and resource allocation. Mrs Llewellyn was able to contribute as well as take away some knowledge and skills to use in our local context.

“It was creative process with a plethora of inspiration from all sources to arrive at the end game. I found the whole process extremely insightful and am ecstatic to have had this opportunity.”

EXCURSION TO DRIFTA KITCHENSThe Year 11 Industrial Technology – Timber Products class went on an excursion to Drifta Kitchens recently. We were privileged to be escorted around the entire manufacturing and assembling plant by John Sutton, the father of the founder and CEO Luke Sutton.

Our students were exposed to all aspects of the business from structural factors, financing, design, quality control, employee relations and marketing.

We were granted access to the assembling sheds experiencing the way that Drifta Kitchens and Campers start as a raw product, to assembly, quality control and delivery to the consumer.

Industrial Technologies such as CNC routers, CNC Plasma and Laser Cutters, coupled with more traditional cabinet and steel making tools and equipment were shown to our students.

The information provided by John was important as it formed the basis for the mandatory industrial content and studies as part of the course being studied. The company is extremely supportive of our school and the larger Gloucester community, employing over 80 staff at the manufacturing plant based in our community. Willingly sharing information with our students to help them with their studies allowed for a stronger relationship with our school and local industry.

A great day out! The Year 11 Industrial Technology class and I not only learnt a lot, we had fun as well. Thank you Drifta.

Mr Damien Keen, Relieving Head Teacher TAS

HOSPITALITY NEWS

Barista TrainingOn Thursday 28 March, Year 11 Hospitality Students completed a one day Barista course. The training was facilitated by North Coast TAFE. These TAFE teachers also work within the Hospitality Industry. One owns their own café and the other spends time in several cafes and also works within the Hotel Industry. This provides students with the opportunity to gain information on current industry trends and knowledge.

Students were kept busy during the day as they practiced a diverse range of coffee styles such as Lattes and Macchiato.

Year 11 students learnt the importance of a perfect extraction using all senses to ensure an optimum product. The students then discovered the art of texturing the milk, then the skill of pouring to produce the perfect coffee!

Cake Decorating for Gloucester ShowIt’s show time! Year 11 & 12 Hospitality Students have been busy planning, designing and creating! The theme for the 2019 Gloucester Show is ’Bees’. The students have chosen to enter Section 9B – the ‘Decorated 18th birthday cake’.

It is amazing to see the diverse variety of designs. All students are entering the same cake, though the individual creativity is incredible!

Congratulations to all the Hospitality Students for your amazing and creative talent.

OPEN BOYS SQUASHThe Open Boys Squash team travelled to Cardiff Squash courts last week to defend their Hunter title. Facing Lambton HS, Gloucester was off to a great start with Dylan Woodbine defeating his opponent in 4 matches. Ethan Bird competed on an adjacent court and played an opponent highly ranked in the state. In a tense battle, Ethan came out on top in 5 matches, winning the last 11-6. Riley Doutty won his game in 3 matches to seal victory. Baily Ballantyne lost his game to a highly ranked Hunter player.

Gloucester won 3 games to 1 and became the Hunter champions for the 4th year in a row. What an achievement boys!!

In conjunction with the team’s event, the Hunter Squash trials were also held. Ethan Bird successfully made the team again, but in addition Baily Ballantyne was also selected as a shadow player. The CHS titles will be held at Thornleigh in late Term 2. Well done on your selection boys.

ATHLETICS CARNIVALThe annual GHS athletics carnival will be held on Wednesday 8 May (Week 2, Term 2).

The carnival will be held at the Kay Green Memorial track adjacent to the Recreation Centre.

Students are asked to assemble on the Netball courts at 8.55am for roll call and will be rotating around the various events during the day. Students who catch buses will be dropped off at the track and also picked up from there in the afternoon.

Parents are welcome to attend and spectate on the day. A permission note and information for the day will be sent home with students early in Term 2.

No canteen facilities will be available on the day so students will need to bring their recess and lunch, plenty of water, a hat, sunscreen and appropriate clothing to participate in activities. Students are encouraged to wear their house colours.

For those who qualify, Zone Athletics will be held during Week 4 of Term 2 (20-24 May – date TBA) at South St, Tuncurry.

CROSS COUNTRYDuring PE lessons for the remainder of term, Years 7-10 will be participating in Cross Country. Not only does this contribute to the students overall practical mark, it allows the PE staff to identify potential runners for Zone Cross Country.

This year, Zone Cross Country will be held at the Wingham Sporting Complex on Thursday 11 April (Week 11 of Term 1).

Those students in Year 11 and Year 12 who wish to be considered for selection to attend the Zone carnival should see Mr Cameron.

Year 10 will be on work experience at the time of Zone Cross Country. Those students in Year 10 who wish to be considered for Hunter selection also need to see Mr Cameron.

Work ExperienceYear 10 students are entering their final week of Work Experience!!!!

All Year 10 students should be going out on Work Experience Week 11 (April 8 – April 12).

The first week has been very productive and employers have only provided positive feedback!

Students must ensure they follow the procedures outlined in the Work Experience Handbook. It also includes 2 Evaluation forms for Employers. These Evaluation forms must be given to the employers on their first day of work. They should be completed by the employers throughout the placement and collected by the student on their last day of work. They will then be returned to Mr De Angelis upon their return to school Term 2.

Work Experience is part of your Year 10 school work and therefore continued excellent behaviour is expected. You are also representing the school, very much in the public view, and the continued success of the program depends on student / employer cooperation.

Have a great week Year 10 students! Make the most of your experiences, represent our school with pride and enjoy yourselves. Good Luck!

BEAUTIFICATION OF THE SCHOOLIn Semester 2 2018, Yr 10 Visual Arts worked on a unit called ‘Beautification of the School’. The students learned about site specific art and how artists respond to a site; creating artworks that reflect the nature of the space, its history or its purpose. They formed groups and were asked to find a place within the school grounds that they would like to enhance with their artworks.

These images of artworks are just a sample of the wonderful work the students created. The artwork by Emily Dulihanty, Holly Willis and Anneka Hooke was created specifically for the wall outside the senior centre. They chose to create a dandelion as it represented the hopes and wishes of students as the leave school after their HSC.

The rainforest scene by Leah Smith was one of a lovely collection of paintings that have brightened up the corridor outside the art and music rooms. This group created scenes of various landscapes. They painted a desert landscape, an underwater scene, a snowy landscape, and an Australian river scene

Another group selected to enhance the stairway leading to the library. They decided to created artworks that showed how books are like portals to another world. There is a lovely collection of individual works by the students that all portray the power of books to capture the imagination and transport us to other dimensions. The work by Lilly Ryll is just one of these inspiring works.

I am so proud of the very talented group of artists from year 10 Visual Arts 2018 and thank you all very much for your efforts. You should be very proud of your beautiful contributions to our school grounds. You have certainly made the school more beautiful. Well done!

LIBRARY NEWSSo ends the first term of 2019. Thank you to all who have come to use the library and especially those who have borrowed books. If you come and borrow a book before end of term, you will have ALL holidays to read it. What better way to spend your holidays than lost in another world?

The UNO challenge heats have been drawn up and will start on Monday at lunch time. If you have registered, please make sure you are in the library at the start of lunch so that the first games can get underway.

The Easter Book Bunny has invaded Gloucester High Library. After much scheming, a list of clues have been left to find the hidden (or maybe not so hidden) Easter treats. Come in and see if you can solve the clues and win the prize!
