kiDS CoRnERDiscipline

The word ‘ discipline’ must be bringing two words to your mind namely ‘rules’ and ‘control’. In our everyday life we all follow various kinds of rules. Every place has its own particular set of rules. Just as you follow the rules set by others, similarly you must set a few rules for yourself and follow them in all situations. This is called self – discipline.

A self – disciplined person never gets carried away by what others say. It helps a person become more organised in his or her day – to – day life. Self – discipline strengthens your will and makes you act on it.

WaterWater is gift of nature. It is water that helps us

stay alive besides being indispensable for our different daily needs. Isn’t it strange then, that we do not value water and waste it thoughtlessly? Moreover there are many people in the world for whom a bucket of clean water every day is more precious than gold. There are many people who fall ill because they do not get clean drinking water. Do we think about people when we forget to turn off taps or when we throw away half a glass of drinking water.

Since it is a gift of nature, every creature on the earth has equal rights over water. We cannot use water in a way that deprives others

of it. We cannot spoil it so that it becomes useless to others. We must use it carefully and responsibly so that there is enough clean water available to all.

Article on ‘BLACk MonEY’The money that is earned and

hoarded by dishonest and unfair means and kept in secret to evade taxes is called black – money. It becomes black because no taxes are paid on it. It is earned by dishonest and unfair means. The massive amount of black money in our country has created a parallel economy.

Accumulation of black money poses a grave threat to our economy and is likely to threaten the security and survival of the country. It is the source and at the same time cause of graft, corruption and degradation of social and moral values. There are various factors responsible for the origin, existence and flourishing state of the parallel economy of black money. It originates with the combination of money and power. With black money any one can be bought or bribed, essential commodities can be cornered and hoarded, healthy competition can be driven out and honest men and public servants can be black mailed.

The common complaint against students is they are hyper-active,

distracted & unable to hold on at one place for a very long time. C.U. Shah Primary school initiated the Heartfulness programme to address this complaint. The main aim is to help them to do something creative, drawing inspiration from around. Children were given these meditation session by trained mentors. Gradually the students found that these sessions really relaxed them especially for higher classes who expreseed their desire to have this sessions between two periods. One of the students shares the experience: “Before we experienced these relaxing sessions, we were a bit anxious.

We felt may be this is some stretching exercises or yoga. But the entire link of sessions were an amazing experience. We felt peace and self control. We try to do it at home

everyday and the outcome is that we can study one hour extra with focused attention and concentration. Heartfullness is all about doing things whole heartedly.”

Radhika’s Authentic South indian foodBy Nirja Vasavada

In Ahmedabad, if you name South Indian Cuisine, you mean Idlis, Dosa (or

Dhhonsa as they say it!), Vadas and Sambhar! But again, in Ahmedabad, if you enter Radhika’s, you actually get to know how many more tasty fares there are in the South

Indian Cuisine besides these popular classics! As the name of the joint suggests, Radhika’s

is truly an authentic south Indian food joint. Located in a busy area of Gurukul, it’s a simple, not too fancy and yet comfortable place. There is also aroma of spices and coconut chutney wafting from the kitchen, making you hungry. The place serves Idlis, Upma, Vada, Paniyaram for breakfast, and there is an unending list of various types of Dosas (Pesarattu masala and Podi masala are personal

favourites) and Uttapams. Apart from these, you also get meals options. The authentic taste comes mainly from the spices used in the food. Whether its coconut chutney or rasam, or even simple curd rice, there is no compromise with the taste.

The best part was the filter coffee! Served in steel glass, the coffee took me in a different world altogether. All in all, if you haven’t been to Radhika’s,

you have missed a truly authentic south Indian food joint (which you don’t even find easily!). Recommended items are Podi Masala Dosa, RAdhika’s Special Uttapam, Panniyaram and Filter Coffee.

HighwayDirected by – Imtiaz Ali

Very few films in bollywood feel effortless as Highway.

Quite an ambitious piece of art, Highway is an Imtiaz Ali’s gorgeously made film which talks about something that we don’t like to hear, watch. In fact, that ‘something’ exists because we don’t talk about it.

The film opens with Veera (Alia Bhatt) convincing her fiancé to take her for a drive to escape their wedding preparations. While the fiancé gives in to her constant nagging, his fears also come true when Veera gets abducted. Ironically, as days go by, Veera finds peace and freedom in her bondage, something she never experienced at home. This freedom makes her confide in her abductor

Mahabir Bhati (Randeep Hooda) about her troubled

childhood. She opens up to Mahabir about the times when her uncle molested her, a fact which was hushed up by her mother. It is at this point that the film takes a turn, everything becomes clear – why Veera has been feeling suffocating in her own house, why she loves to breathe in the open air, and why she never wants her family to find her out, why she never wants this journey to end. The film

in general shows yearning of freedom – freedom from hypocrisy that our society lives in, freedom from sexual abuse, freedom from silence. Ironically, when Veera uses this freedom, the family takes her to have gone ‘mad’ because of abduction. The film acts like a mirror, if we dare to look into it. All in all, Highway is one recommended film you can celebrate the Women’s Day with.

went Shreyash foundation for the educational visit, where all these future teachers saw the working of the school - starting from its natural environment to the teachers’ approach towards students and students’ overall behaviour. The school is unique for a number of reasons. Apart from the peace that the trees in the school premise offer, the visitors observed that the

names of different places were very interesting. Assembly hall, for example, is called ‘Ek Hai’, while the library is called ‘Shrey Bharti’. Shreyas, as explained by one of the staff members, in Sanskrit means well being of the Universe. And the school certainly contributes in the well being of the universe through their distinctive teaching method. It was indeed, a learning experience for the aspiring teachers.

AnAnD MiMAnSABy Dr. Sarla Achuthan

GLS’s B.D. Arts College organized a National Seminar on

“Anandmimamsa: Sahitya, Kala aur Vijnan ke Pariprekshya mein” on February 7 and 8, 2016 at the GLS Auditorium. The seminar was sponsored by the Indian Council of Philosophical Research, MHRD. “Mimamsa” is a Sanskrit word that means “reflection” or “critical investigation”. Mīmāṃsāconsists of both atheistic and theistic doctrines. And the speakers of the seminar focused on both these aspects.

The Chief Guest of the inaugural function was Rev. ‘Dravidacharya’ Shri. Ramkrishnan Swamiji (Eminent Shankara Vedanta Scholar, Shastra Nethralaya, Rishikesh). In his address he talked about different facets of “Ananda”. Based on his vast experience he said that “Love is

directly proportional to bliss”. Further, he said that the pursuit of Ananda was similar to a Catch 22 situation. He also talked about self-knowledge and shelf knowledge. This was Swamiji’s first visit to the state of Gujarat which was initiated by GLS.

The key note address was delivered by Dr. S.R. Bhatt, Chairman, Indian Council of

Philosophical Research (ICPR). He pointed out that pure bliss was not to be discussed and deliberated- it was an experience and Indian culture was holistic and integral – It was one in many and many in one. Shri Sudhir Nanavati, Vice President, Gujarat Law Society and President, GLS University delivered his presidential address. He explained his

perspective of Ananda from the lessons he had derived from moments of happiness and unhappiness from his experience. He also congratulated Dr. Geeta Mehta and her team for contributing to women’s education. A book entitled “Anand-Mimansa” was released in the inaugural session. The book contained 61 research papers by participants

of different colleges covering a variety of subjects such as Emotional Quotient (EQ), Food, Sangeet, Bhasa, Chitra, Environment, Drama, Psychology, Social Groups, etc., highlighting the relevance of Ananda.
