this Season is one of the most prestigious that we have ever programmed. We’ve been working for over three years on its creation: making arrangements for a superb cast of guest soloists and conductors to join us in Scotland. I’m so proud of the world-class line-up of artists who will share their music with us.

there are some threads that weave throughout the Season; themes and links that knit together pieces and programmes. this year we will be looking at music inspired by works of literature – from exotic tales (Scheherazade, Firebird) to classic novels (Don Quixote, Candide), and from epic stories (Peer Gynt, Tristan and Isolde, Taras Bulba) to memorable poems (The Bells, and Wilfred owen’s war poetry).

I will continue to make my way through Mahler’s mighty symphonies – this year we have reached the Sixth – and we will celebrate the bicentenary of Schumann by offering a survey of all his four symphonies with four different conductors.

towards the end of the Season in May, I’m thrilled to be conducting my first War Requiem of Benjamin Britten, with a brilliant cast and the superb RSno Choruses. I hope you will join us for what promises to be a profound and moving experience.

So let us open up the story book together, and enter a world where the only boundary is our own imagination!

Chaleureusement,

Stéphane DenèveRSno Music Director

The best of all possible worldssaturday 10 october 2009: 7.30pmthe first half features two composers whose musical styles seemed half in earnest, half in jest. Pastiche fuses brilliantly with heartfelt melody in both Bernstein’s Candide and Strauss’ Concerto. Brahms’ First Symphony provides contrast, as it moves from its dark openings via heroic struggles through to its triumphant end.

angelic Memoriessaturday 17 october 2009: 7.30pmWith a beginning as fragile as flowers, Berg’s Violin Concerto is a tender elegy on the untimely death of a young girl. one of the world’s greatest violinists leonidas Kavakos will breathe life into this work, written “in memory of an angel”. Ravel’s well-known Pavane For a Dead Princess evokes the dignity of a Spanish processional dance whilst Dvorák’s Seventh Symphony, the composer’s most romantic, brings this emotionally-charged concert to a close.

during the 09:10 Season the RSNO annual appeal will celebrate the 30th anniversary of the RSNO Junior chorus.

For 30 years the RSno Junior Chorus has been a beloved part of Scotland’s musical life, creating unforgettable musical memories for thousands of children, and providing them with the priceless opportunity to work alongside one of europe’s finest orchestras.

Generations have already benefited from the expert training and experience of performance and recording that being a member of the RSno Junior Chorus provides. every Monday evening the RSno Centre is a hive of activity as over 250 children make music together, growing audibly in confidence and skill as the weeks go by. Whatever else they go on to do in their lives, they will always have music.

The GifT Of SiNGiNG

Many people these days opt to donate back to the RSno some of the great savings they make through being a subscriber. In this special anniversary year you can help us to bring the gift of singing to future generations of Scottish children. Please make a donation as we seek to expand and enrich the opportunities we provide for the RSno Junior Chorus.
