2 Manufacture 2.1 The 601 and 602 series sinks, drip cups and accessories are injection moulded from black polypropylene. The traps are manufactured from polypropylene. 2.2 The 603 series troughs are fabricated from polypropylene. 2.3 As part of the assessment and ongoing surveillance of product quality, the BBA has:

• agreed with the manufacturer the quality control procedures and product testing to be undertaken

• assessed and agreed the quality control operated over batches of incoming materials

• monitored the production process and verified that it is in accordance with the documented process

• evaluated the process for management of nonconformities

• checked that equipment has been properly tested and calibrated

• undertaken to carry out the above measures on a regular basis through a surveillance process, to verify that the specifications and quality control operated by the manufacturer are being maintained.

2.4 The management system of Glynwed Pipe System Ltd has been assessed and registered as meeting the requirements of BS EN ISO 9001 : 2015 by BSI Quality Assurance (Certificate FM 34819).

3 Delivery and site handling 3.1 The traps are marked with the manufacturer’s registered trademark and the nominal internal diameter of the inlet and outlet connections. 3.2 The sinks, troughs, drip cups and traps are robust but normal care is required in handling to prevent damage, with the exception of trap types 910G, W691 and W571 which have a borosilicate glass base and should be handled more carefully.

3.3 The system components should be protected from impacts, for example, from heavy vehicles (such as fork-lift trucks) used on commercial premises.

Assessment and Technical Investigations The following is a summary of the assessment and technical investigations carried out on the Vulcathene Mechanical Laboratory Drainage System, Sinks, Troughs, Drip Cups and Traps.

Design Considerations

4 Use 4.1 The Vulcathene Mechanical Laboratory Drainage System, Sinks, Troughs, Drip Cups and Traps are satisfactory for use in domestic, commercial and public buildings in accordance with ISO TR 10358 : 1993 and BS EN 12056-2 : 2000 for the conveyance of domestic drainage and sewage as is permitted to be discharged into public sewers by the Water Industry Act, 1991 (England and Wales), and sewage as is permitted and defined by the Sewerage (Scotland) Act 1968 and the Water and Sewerage Services (Northern Ireland) Order 2006. 4.2 The system components are used in conjunction with Vulcathene Pipes and Fittings described in the additional Product Sheets of this Certificate. 4.3 Where the system is to be used in a laboratory application with chemical effluents not suitable for discharge into a public sewer, the building drainage should run to a holding tank. The local Water Authority should be consulted regarding details of the effluents likely to be discharged into the system.

5 Practicability of installation The system is designed to be installed by a competent general plumber, or a contractor, experienced with this type of system.

6 Strength

Vulcathene Sinks, Troughs, Drip Cups and Traps will have adequate resistance to the forms of loading

associated with installation.

7 Performance of joints

The joints will not be adversely affected by thermal movement when correctly made.

8 Effectiveness of trap seals

8.1 The traps have a depth of seal of 76 mm. The seal will withstand the application of an air pressure of 70 mm water gauge and will not therefore nullify the effect of the water seal in the trap.

8.2 In the opinion of the BBA, the antisiphon bottle trap types W561 and W571 comply with the requirements of the Department of Health and the Welsh Office, Health Building Note 00-10 : Part C Sanitary assemblies.

9 Flow characteristics

9.1 The flow characteristics of the sinks, troughs, drip cups and traps minimise the risk of blockages.

9.2 At flow rates of up to 10 litres per minute, the dilution recovery traps are effective in collecting and retaining solid matter.

10 Resistance to chemicals

10.1 The system is resistant to a wide range of noxious chemicals for laboratory applications. The suitability of the system for a particular application can be determined using ISO TR 10358 : 1993. The advice of the Certificate holder should be sought for resistance to chemicals not covered by this document.

10.2 The system will be unaffected by the types and quantities of chemicals likely to be found in drainage and sewage effluents as defined in section 4.

11 Resistance to elevated temperatures The system has adequate resistance to the temperatures likely to occur in the drainage and sewage effluents.

12 Properties in relation to fire

The Regulations concerning the prevention of fire spread by fire-stopping must be taken into account if the systems pass through a fire rated wall or floor.

13 Maintenance

13.1 The W561 and W571 anti-siphon bottle traps and the W681 dilution recovery traps have sumps that can be removed for cleaning by unscrewing. The chamber of the dilution recovery trap type W691 is removed by unscrewing the flange assembly. The dilution recovery trap types W612 and 910G are cleaned by removing the dip tubes and carefully flushing the interior of the dilution chambers. Access is provided in accordance with BS EN 12056-2 : 2000.

13.2 The use of abrasive agents should be avoided when the sinks, troughs and drip-cups are cleaned.

13.3 In clinical laboratory applications, the use of traditional plug/overflow assemblies with a sink or trough is

considered to be unhygienic. In such instances a standing waste tube should be used.

14 Durability

14.1 When used within the conditions and recommendations given in this Certificate, the system will have a serviceable life equivalent to conventional plastics drainage systems.

14.2 Prolonged exposure to strong oxidising agents in a laboratory application may reduce the serviceable life of the system.

15 Reuse and recyclability The polypropylene material of the components is fully recyclable.

Installation

16 General Installation of the Vulcathene Mechanical Laboratory Drainage System, Sinks, Troughs, Drip Cups And Traps should be in accordance with BS EN 12056-2 : 2000 and the Certificate holder’s Technical Guide.

17 Procedure 17.1 Typical laboratory bench waste runs are shown in Figures 2 and 3. The sinks, troughs and drip cups are jointed to the traps by a 1½” BSP loose nut coupling. Typical sink and drip cup installation details are shown in Figure 4.
