Motivating stories for less able and reluctant readers Wolf Hill is an exciting series from the creators of Oxford Reading Tree, designed to provide an easy, supportive and sustained read for those pupils who need to gain confidence and motivation in their reading. The stories will appeal to reluctant readers aged approximately 7–11 and deal with the real-world adventures of a group of friends who live and attend school in an area called Wolf Hill. Shared Reading: Big Books
There are 24 large format books (297 x 387cm) ideal for whole class or group sessions where all students are able to see the text. Shared books are a great support for students who may not be reading independently and allow the teacher to introduce and reinforce literacy skills and strategies.
Shared books that work best are age- and interest-appropriate and tend to have magical, rhythmic, rhyming, repetitive text. Jill Eggleton has ensured that all these elements are found in Key Links Shared Books.

DaiLy fOCUsreading should always be for enjoyment! Key Links recommends that a different teaching focus is taken each day.
scaffolding and reinforcementThe titles in Key Links have been carefully sequenced to scaffold and reinforce literacy skills and strategies, including:
• Letter–sound relationships• High-frequency words• Vocabulary• Punctuation• Reading fluency• Processing skills• Comprehension strategy.
Class-to-home Link The focus panels provide a class-to-home link to help ensure parents and teachers are ‘on the same page’ if books are taken home.
Often parents are unsure how to use take-home reading books. The prompts in the focus panels can be used by parents to discuss Key Links books and also to give them ideas for how to approach other books they read with their children.

Get them giggling and you’ve got their attention!Gigglers are humorous stories to motivate even your most reluctant reader. Full-colour illustrations bring these funny stories to life. These books are popular across a range of ages because humour is the one thing that all children like. aimed at students with dyslexia and visual stress or a simple reluctance to read, key features of each book include:• Cream paper to help reduce glare, a factor in visual stress • Specially designed typeface and spacing to make everything as clear as possible and help students
remember the shape of words and letters• Extra thick paper so that words and illustrations don’t show through from other pages and confuse
the eye• Most importantly, stories pitched at the ‘real’ age of the reader and not their reading age, including
books by leading children’s authors – Michael Morpurgo, Andy Stanton, Jo Cotterill, Jeremy Strong, Pippa Goodhart and others – specially written for these series.

Asher Harris is ridiculously good-looking, like one of those magazine boys Abbie and I drool over. I realise I’m staring at him like he’s not real, so I look at my shoes instead, trying to get my head together.
Olivia is trapped in sleepy Reaggers Point for the holidays, making deliveries every morning from her mum and dad’s store. Nothing ever happens in Reaggers Point and it’s shaping up as the most boring holidays ever—until Olivia meets Asher Harris. Asher always carries a camera and teaches Olivia how to see the world through a viewfinder. But he has a secret, and when Olivia gets too close their growing friendship threatens to shatter.

The choice for school captain should be easy: Harry Sim is the ‘best at
everything’, whereas James Salvetti is too much of a nobody. But when the votes are counted and it’s a tie,
the boys must wait a week while the teachers sort out who wins.
Enter Mr Mould, the assistant principal. James and Harry spot him one morning behaving very strangely behind the school. Could the rumours
about ‘Old Mouldy’ be true? Did he really get kicked out of his last school for being violent? The stage is set for a battle of wills between Mr Mould, and
James and Harry in their race to become school captain.

They were made of polished brass. Etched along the shafts were delicate vines of morning glory. The straps were honey-red leather, and the eight-pointed star wheels tinkled like tiny bells. Just holding them made Ben sit up straighter on his brother’s horse.
Ben loves the riding spurs. He polishes them in the privacy of the hayloft. He watches them gleam like gold out in the paddock. He straps them on his boots and rides his old pony, pretending to be a conquistador.
There’s just one problem—the spurs don’t belong to him.

Let’s face it, the titles are a little naughty (just like Pig), but the stories are harmless fun and children just love the laugh out-loud humour combined with poignant tales of friendship.
All titles are Accelerated Reader levelled.

I’ve been with the Vixens for three years
now. I’m in the Under 15s. I get on well
with my coach, and the other girls on the
team are great. We all look out for each
other and have a laugh.
My dream is to play in goal for Wales.
To make that dream come true I’d have to
follow what is called a player pathway.
It goes something like this: Some lucky girls being trained by a player from Chelsea
Ladies FC.
A Player Observer
Volunteer (or scout)
comes to watch me.
I dazzle them so much I
get sent to a regional camp
for additional training.
After that I’m invited to attend a
Girls’ Performance Centre. (Wales has
three.) The centres are where top class coaches
train the U15 and U17 national squads.
They are held three or four times a season
and usually last a few days. Football with
sleepovers – wicked!

When he knew his armies were defeated, Hitler
killed himself. Just under a year after D-Day,
Germany surrendered. This became known as
VE Day (Victory in Europe Day).
victory! D-Day was the greatest armed invasion in
history. The courage of the Allied forces helped
make it possible to bring the war to an end.
Germany was under attack from the East, too.
More than twenty million Russians died fi ghting
against Hitler (compared with less than half
a million British soldiers).
The war was fought in Eastern Europe as well as Western Europe. The Eastern front was very cold. The war against Japan lasted for three more
months. Japan was an ally of Germany. Soldiers
from Africa, China and India fought bravely
alongside British, American and Australian soldiers.
Street parties were held all over Britain to celebrate the end of the war.
A group celebrates in Paris, wearing dresses that represent the main Allied nations.

One of the offi cers shouts an order. “Watch these hedges. They’re a death trap.”
“You heard the man,” Sarge shouts. “Keep your
eyes peeled.” The words are hardly out of his mouth when
a shot rings out. Men are ducking for cover or
fl attening themselves on the ground. “Sniper!”
A bullet spits into the hedge above my head.
My heart slams. One of our boys gets a clear shot.
There’s a fl ash and the crack of a bullet. The German
sniper bursts out of the hedge. His movements
are clumsy. He’s wounded. Half a dozen of us race
forward. We catch up with him in a cornfi eld. He
turns his rifl e on us. There’s a shot and he falls.
“Got him!” We drag the body out. His eyes are open. They
stare up at the sky.
20
Eddie took time to count them. “Six, seven,
eight! Mistake!”
“Why?” I asked.
“An octopus only has six legs.”
“That’s insects,” I told him.
The next float was a hair salon with a line
of chairs. The students on them all had crazy hair
in even crazier colours. And some had so much
glitter on the top that it was spilling around them.
“You’d look good like that,” I said to Eddie.
He grinned. “Can you imagine Mrs Miller’s
face?”
Running along beside the floats were students
shaking buckets of money at the passers-by. Eddie
never has any money. But I dipped in my pocket
and found a couple of coins, so I gave those.

The Reading Boxes have been written and designed by experienced teachers to address the gap between decoding skills and comprehension ability. They provide informative, imaginative and motivational text whilst asking literal, interpretive, inferential and critical questions. The Reading Boxes are self managing, motivational, allow for totally individualised learning and are great for all readers, including reluctant readers. They are ideal to use to occupy one group with quality work, allowing teachers to concentrate on other groups or activities such as guided reading.
Assessment is incorporated throughout the programme in the form of:• Pre-tests at the beginning of each unit
that ensure students are placed at the proper level
• Post-tests at the end of each unit that check for mastery and identify areas in need of review.

Stop, Think, Do: Social Skills TrainingStop, Think, Do is a social skills programme for use in schools with children who have emotional/social/behavioural difficulties that affect their ability to make friends. It is designed as a classroom curriculum for children to prevent such difficulties arising. Originally designed for Australian schools, it is now internationally recognised as an invaluable social skills programme and is being used by many schools and CPD groups around the world. 74 PhONiCs
The series uses a number of methodologies that will help teachers to consolidate and further enhance the teaching of phonics in their class:
★ Phonics fans in each activity book ensure all pupils must offer an answer to each phonics question
★ Numerous reinforcing games are detailed in the teacher’s handbooks, including a wide variety of fun spelling games at 1st and 2nd Class levels
★ At 1st and 2nd Class, a major emphasis is placed within the programme on alternative spellings for different sounds, with characters from the sound families and games presented in the teacher’s handbook
★ Blending activities based on groups of sounds are included throughout the activity books
★ Phonics for fun sessions are a perfect support for station working and group work
★ Regular revision pages consolidate learning
★ Two comprehensive Teacher’s Handbooks provide detailed support for teachers using the series.
★ www.phonics.ie is a dedicated website for the series, offering teachers a bank of printable blending worksheets, as well as reading and dictation sheets. These structured sheets present blending in manageable chunks, allowing even the weakest pupil to experience success.
