At this crucial time in the progress of the Paris Agreement and global climate action, worldleaders are gathering in Bonn, Germany for the United Nations Conference of the Parties(COP 23). Oregon’s Governor Kate Brown will be attending with many state leaders andgrassroots delegations, filling the vacuum of climate leadership at the national level.
Tonight our community marks this occasion by joining others across the world launchingKeyboard Conversations with pianists & scientists. These unique conversations open aspace, where music can enter the heart and clear the way for sound science to sink in, openingnew pathways for the creation of the loving and peaceful world we all want and need. We aremounting an unstoppable transition away from a corrupt and polluting fossil fuels system to a justand clean energy democracy. Let’s come together!
The program, in three parts:
I - Alexander Schwarzkopf presents piano compositions: “Reflets dans lʼeau” (Reflections onthe Water) by Debussy, “Liquid Piano” (2017) and Recycled Wheels” (2016) by Schwarzkopf
II - Professor Greg Retallack, Geological Sciences faculty member at the University of Oregonsince 1981, takes us into deep time with his vision of “Soil Carbon Dioxide Planetary Thermostat”
III - Alexander Schwarzkopf musically concludes with “Ce qʼua vu le Vent dʼOuest” (What theWest Wind Saw) by Debussy; followed by Q & A with Professor Retallack.

The more you know the project, the more you come to understand how absurd it is and how
important it is that we do everything we can to stop it.
Our expert panel is made up of: Ada Ball, a local tribal member who speaks to the devastationand disrespect of fossil fuel projects to Indigenous people, Deb Evans, a landowner on thepipeline route threatened by eminent domain, and Prof. Charlie Miller, an oceanographerfamiliar with the extreme hazards of methane production in a tsunami and earthquakesubduction zone.
350 Eugene is helping coordinate statewide actions opposing fossil fuel projects this month,including rallies and testimony at hearings, community forums, petitions, letter writing, op-eds,and creative disruption. One of our main goals is to exert enough public pressure on GovernorKate Brown so she will stand up and say no to this project on behalf of Oregon’s climate goalsand the future safety of its citizens.
This event also marks 350 Eugene’s Kick-off of 350.org’s National “Fossil Free WorldCampaign,” featuring gatherings / house parties / rallies and organizing around two demands:
1) Halt new fossil fuel infrastructure plans2) Commit to 100% Clean energy for all, and making this transition of our energy system just &equitable
National campaign stages: Starting in November, the launch of Fossil Free campaigns incommunities across the country, including the introduction of Fossil Free resolutions / ordinancesand reaching out to educate our public. By summer, plans will include the use of nonviolent directaction and other tactics to raise the stakes, ending in massive pressure at the Global ClimateAction Summit in San Francisco in September. Stay tuned.
We will be giving Governor Brown a small gift when she travels to Bonn, Germany torepresent us at COP 23 - “The Green Book” - thanks to Bernadette Bourassa and Linda Heylfor assembling a “little green book” for our Governor, with names and contact information ofOregon’s climate & conservation groups, who relentlessly urge her to stand up to fossil fuelinfrastructure projects in our beautiful state. (We think she’ll love it!)

The world is at a turning point, the climate crisis is no longer a future threat, it’s a clearand present danger. If governments are serious about their commitments to the ParisAgreement, they must keep fossil fuels in the ground and rapidly transition to renewable energy.
During COP23, we are coming together to recommit ourselves to telling politicians that they mustprioritize their people over the polluters!
