Extreme weather began on Saturday, 3 April 2021 around 8 am and reached a peak of intensity that lasted several hours from about 1 am until 8 am on Monday, 5 April 2021. Rain accompanied by heavy winds caused flooding, landslides, big waves, and thousands of trees falling down throughout East Nusa Tenggara.

Thousands fled their homes; hundreds disappeared or died. Buildings, roads and bridges, and electricity and Internet networks were damaged or destroyed. Public services in many places have been curtailed or have totally broken down. A shortage of basic items such as zinc, fuel, and food stuffs has led to price gouging in some instances. Emergency aid from places within and outside East Nusa Tenggara has begun to be distributed in places that were hit the hardest, like Sabu. Some people are still staying at several emergency response posts that have been set up in churches because their houses haven’t been repaired yet. A government helicopter and an Indonesian Navy ship are available to go to areas currently difficult to reach either due to landslides or high waves. It is important to note that the national government’s attention has focused on areas of Flores such as Adonara Island and other areas of Lembata Regency. Much attention from all parties is also needed for isolated areas such as Pantar Island (Alor); Nuse, Dana, dan Ndau Islands (Rote); Raijua Island (Sabu), dan remote villages in Kupang Regency such as Tetebudale in West Amarasi and villages in Amfoang.
