    MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL

" It can happen. It does happen.

But it can't happen if you quit ." Lauren Dane.

‘We are what we repeatedly do.

Excellence then is not an act, but a habit .’ Aristotle

It gives me immense pleasure to pen a few words for our e-bulletin. At the onset I would like to thank t

last year’s editors and congratulate the newly selected editors for the current year.

Our first consideration is always in the best interest of the students. Our goal is to promote academexcellence and continuous improvement.

I believe that excellence in education is aided by creating a learning environment in which all learners asupported in maximizing their potential and talents. Education needs to focus on personalized learni

and instruction, while promoting an education system that is impartial, universally accessible, and meeti

    the needs of all students.

It is of paramount importance that our learners have sufficient motivation and encouragement in order

achieve their aims. We are all very proud of you, our students, and your accomplishments and looforward to watching as you put your mark on the profession in the years ahead.

The call of the time is to progress, not merely to move ahead.  Our progressive Management is looki

forward and wants our Institute to flourish as a Post Graduate Institute of Excellence. Steps are taken

this direction and fruits of these efforts will be received by our students in the near future. Our Teacheare committed and dedicated for the development of the institution by imparting their knowledge and pl

the role of facilitator as well as role model to our students.

The Pharmacy profession is thriving with a multitude of possibilities, opportunities and positi

challenges. At Guru Nanak Institute of Pharmaceutical Science and Technology, our focus is on holist

    needs of our students.

I am confident that the students of GNIPST will recognize all the possibilities, take full advantage of t

opportunities and meet the challenges with purpose and determination.

Excellence in Education is not a final destination, it is a continuous walk. I welcome you to join us

    this path.

    My best wishes to all.

    HISTORICAL ARTICLE

    John Dalton

    (1766 – 1844)

John Dalton’s Early Life and Education

John Dalton was born on September 6, 1766, in Eaglesfield, England. His father was a weaver, who owned a house and a small amount ofland. Both of his parents were Quakers.

Although Quakers were Christians, they were seen as dissenters bythe established Church of England. As a result of this, John Dalton’shigher educational opportunities were restricted to dissenting placesof education.

John Dalton was an intelligent child, who took an interest in theworld around him and tried to learn as much as he could abouteverything.

He attended his village school until he was 11, and then beganhelping as a teacher.

At age 15, he started helping his older brother John to run a Quakerboarding-school in the town of Kendal, 40 miles from his home. All

the while, he continued teaching himself science, mathematics, Latin,Greek and French. By the time he was 19, he had become the school’sprincipal, continuing in this role until he was 26 years old.

It seems that the school’s students liked Dalton teaching them, one ofthem recalling:

“The boys (were) all glad to be taught by John Dalton, because hehad a gentler disposition; and besides his mind was so occupied withmathematics, that their faults escaped his notice.”

Becoming a ScientistIn the first half of 1793, aged 26, Dalton took the position of teacherof mathematics and natural philosophy at Manchester’s NewCollege, a dissenting college.

In 1794, he wrote his first scientific paper which hecalled: Extraordinary Facts Relating to the Vision of Colours.

This was the first ever paper to discuss color blindness. Dalton had

realized the condition was hereditary, because he and other membersof his family had it.

Ultimately, Dalton’s theory for color blindness was wrong, but as hewas the first person ever to research it, the condition became knownas Daltonism.

Further research papers followed, in the physical sciences: heatconduction, gas expansion by heat, the properties of light, the auroraborealis, and meteorology.

In 1800, Dalton began earning a living as a private tutor in scienceand mathematics. He resigned from New College, which was infinancial difficulty.

    Atomic Theory

    The Behavior of Gases

In 1801, Dalton gave a series of lectures in Manchester whose

contents were published in 1802. In these lectures he presentedresearch he had been carrying out into gases and liquids. Thisresearch was groundbreaking, offering great new insights into thenature of gases.

Firstly, Dalton stated correctly that he had no doubt that all gasescould be liquified provided their temperature was sufficiently lowand pressure sufficiently high.

He then stated that when its volume is held constant in a container, the pressure of a gas varies in direct proportion to its temperature.

This was the first public statement of what eventually becameknown as Gay-Lussac’s Law, named after Joseph Gay-Lussac whopublished it in 1809.

In 1803, Dalton published his Law of Partial Pressures, still used byevery university chemistry student, which states that in a mixture ofnon-reacting gases, the total gas pressure is equal to the sum of the

partial pressures of the individual gases.

By now, Dalton’s work had distinguished him as a scientist of thefirst rank, and he was invited to give lectures to the Royal Institutionin London.

    Dalton and Atoms

His study of gases led Dalton to wonder about what these invisiblesubstances were actually made of.

The idea of atoms had first been proposed more than 2000 yearsearlier by Democritus in Ancient Greece. Democritus believed thateverything was made of tiny particles called atoms and that theseatoms could not be split into smaller particles. Was Democritusright? Nobody knew!

Dalton was now going to solve this 2000 year-old mystery.

He carried out countless chemical reactions, and in 1808 publishedwhat we now call Dalton’s Law in his book

A New System of Chemical Philosophy:

If two elements form more than one compound between them, thenthe ratios of the masses of the second element which combine with a

fixed mass of the first element will be ratios of small whole numbers.Dalton’s Atomic Theory states that:

    1. The elements are made of atoms, which are tiny particles, too smallto see.

    2. All atoms of a particular element are identical.

    3. Atoms of different elements have different properties: their massesare different, and their chemical reactions are different.

    4. Atoms cannot be created, destroyed or split.

    5. In a chemical reaction, atoms link to one another, or separate fromone another.

    6. Atoms combine in simple whole-number ratios to formcompounds.

Although we have learned that atoms of the same element can have

different masses (isotopes), and can be split in nuclear reactions, most of Dalton’s Atomic Theory holds good today, over 200 yearsafter John Dalton described it. It is the foundation on which modernchemistry has been built.

    Honors

Dalton did not marry and had no children. He remained a faithfulQuaker all of his life, living modestly.

In 1810, he declined an invitation to become a member of the RoyalSociety. In 1822, he was elected without his knowledge. In 1826, hewas awarded the Society’s Royal Medal for his Atomic Theory.

In 1833, the French Academy of Sciences elected him as one of itseight foreign members. In 1834, the American Academy of Arts andSciences elected him as a foreign member.

The EndWhen he was 71 years old, Dalton had a small stroke – or paralysis asit was known then. A year later, a more significant stroke left himunable to speak as clearly as he once could. In 1844, when he was 77,another stroke hit him. He died aged 77 on July 27, 1844.

His scientific reputation was so great that when his body was placedin Manchester Town Hall it was visited by more than 40,000 peoplepaying their respects. John Dalton was buried in Manchester in

    Ardwick cemetery.

Fungal pathogen sheds gene silencing machineryand becomes more dangerous: (04th  March,

2016)For more than a decade, a rare but potentially deadly funguscalled Cryptococcus deuterogatti has taken up residence in thePacific Northwest and Vancouver Island. Researchers found thatthe pathogen shed over a dozen different genes as it evolved into

a new, more virulent species. Surprisingly, most of thesediscarded genes play a part in RNA interference or RNAi, aprocess that preserves the integrity of the genome in fungi andother organisms.

Short-term risk of heart attack and stroke

after alcohol consumption: (03rd March, 2016)While the protective connection between moderate alcoholconsumption and heart health has been well-studied, new

A new microfluidic chip could provide more

    comprehensive information to doctors diagnosing

diseases like cancer: (01st March, 2016)Biopsies are a gold standard for definitively diagnosing diseaseslike cancer. Usually, doctors can only take 2-D snapshots of the

tissue, and they're limited in their ability to measure the proteinlevels that might better explain a diagnosis. But now, researchershave developed a new method to acquire 3-D atlases of tissuethat provide much more information, incorporating both data onthe tissue structure and its molecular profile.

    KNOWLEDGE BASED ARTICLE

LupusLupus is an illness of the immune system, a condition in which thebody’s defence mechanism begins to attack itself through anexcess of antibodies in the blood stream, causing inflammation anddamage in the joints, muscles and other organs. It is a highlyvariable disease affecting individuals differently. 90% of lupuspatients are female with most receiving a diagnosis between theages of 15 and 45, it can also affect men and young children.

Lupus is a complicated and poorly understood condition. A surveyof over 3,000 people with lupus showed that the average number ofyears between someone experiencing their first symptom andreceiving a diganosis of lupus is 7.5 years. During this time patientsare unlikely to receive the necessary treatment to lessen the impactof the main symptoms and to limit potential damage to thekidneys, heart, lungs or brain. Lupus is often triggered in people where there is family history of

lupus and/or other immune system illnesses such as arthritis, MSand rheumatism. Afro-Caribbeans and Asian people are more proneto having lupus. Differing environmental factors may alsocontribute to the initiation of the illness in some patients.Lupus is neither infectious nor contagious, and can be triggered:

    • at puberty• during the menopause• after childbirth

    • after viral infection• through sunlight• as a result of trauma• after a prolonged course of some medications

    Symptoms:

Lupus is a disease which can present many different facets. Rarelydo two people have exactly the same symptoms, and these can varyfrom just one to many. Although there are many possible

manifestations of lupus, those listed are some of the more common.A person with lupus may have four or five symptoms, where some ofthese might recede and/or others develop. The two major symptomsof lupus appear to be joint/muscle aches and pains, and extremefatigue and weakness. Other symptoms include:

    • Permanent rash over cheeks• Increased risk of miscarriage• Rashes from sunlight/UV light• Flu-like symptoms and/or night sweats• Weight gain or loss• Inflammation of the tissues covering internal organs with

associated chest and/or abdominal pain• Seizures, mental illness or other cerebral problems• Headaches, migraine• Kidney problems• Oral/nasal ulcers• Hair loss• Depression• Haematological disorders including anaemia• Swollen glandsTreatment:

There is at present no cure for lupus but careful monitoring of thedisease and a treatment programme with medication adjusted asappropriate enables the condition to be controlled, most patients

being able to live a normal life span. Doctors will usually only keepthe patient on high impact medication for as short a period aspossible.

Various medications are available to treat lupus, the mostcommonly used are non-steroidal anti-imflammatory drugs
