Researchers Develop Novel 3-D Culture System

    for Inflammatory Breast Cancer

    (08 DECEMBER 2012)

Inflammatory breast cancer is a very rare and aggressive disease.

To understand how this type of cancer spreads, it's crucial to

characterize the interactions between cancer cells and their 3-D

environment. Researchers have developed a novel, 3-D culture

system that mimics the environment surrounding these cancer

cells. This model could be used to test new anticancer drugscapable of inhibiting the spread of IBC tumors.

    Pre-Clinical Data Suggests Effective

    Against Leukemia(09 DECEMBER 2012)

Angiocidin, a novel tumor-inhibiting protein, has been shown to

reduce acute myeloid leukemia (AML) cells in vivo by almost two-

    thirds in pre-clinical experiments.

Brain Displays an Intrinsic Mechanism for

    Fighting Infection(10 DECEMBER 2012)

White blood cells have long reigned as the heroes of the immunesystem. When an infection strikes, the cells, produced in bone

marrow, race through the blood to fight off the pathogen. But new

research is emerging that individual organs can also play a role in

immune system defense, essentially being their own hero. In a

study examining a rare and deadly brain infection, scientists have

found that the brain cells of healthy people likely produce their

own immune system molecules, demonstrating an "intrinsic

immunity" that is crucial for stopping an infection.

Biologists Engineer Algae to Make Complex

    Anti-Cancer 'Designer' Drug? (10 DECEMBER 2012)

Biologists have succeeded in genetically engineering algae to

produce a complex and expensive human therapeutic drug used to

treat cancer. Their achievement opens the door for making these

and other "designer" proteins in larger quantities and much more

cheaply than can now be made from mammalian cells.

Does Changing the Price of Medicine Influence

    Consumers' Perceived Health Risk?

    (11 DECEMBER 2012)

Consumers assume their risk of getting a serious illness is higher

when medications are cheaper because they believe that prices for

life-saving products are based on need and not profit, according toa new study.

Got Food Allergies? You Can Now Test Your

Meal On the Spot Using a Cell Phone

    (12 DECEMBER 2012)

Scientists have developed a lightweight device called the iTube,

which attaches to a common cell phone to detect allergens in food

samples. The iTube attachment uses the cell phone's built-in

camera, along with an accompanying smart-phone application

that runs a test with the same high level of sensitivity a laboratorywould.

    'Smart Stethoscope' Advance in Monitoring

Treatment of Kidney Stones (12 DECEMBER 2012)

A new listening device is being used to monitor the effectiveness of

the treatment of kidney stones -- saving patients unnecessary

repeat therapy and x-ray monitoring. The new 'Smart stethoscope'

is placed on a patient's skin as they undergo shock wave treatment

for kidney stones and assesses whether the treatment is working.

Study Paves Way to Design Drugs Aimed at

    Multiple Protein Targets at Once

    (12 DECEMBER 2012)

Pharmaceutical chemists had suggested that the objective of a

drug hitting multiple targets simultaneously is impossible and

unlikely to succeed. A new study shows how to efficiently and

effectively make designer drugs that can do that.

    Targeted Micro-Bubbles Detect Artery

Inflammation: Procedure Done in Pigs Could

Potentially Detect Heart Disease Early in

    Humans (12 DECEMBER 2012)

Researchers have found that targeted micro-bubbles can help

detect heart disease before it progresses too far as well as identify

patients who are at risk for strokes.

    HEALTH AWARENESS

    Health and Human Right

The does not mean the right to be healthy, nor does it mean that poorgovernments must put in place expensive health services for which they have no

resources. But it does require governments and public authorities to put in place

policies and action plans which will lead to available and accessible health care for all

in the shortest possible time. To ensure that this happens is the challenge facing both

the human rights community and public health professionals.
