ILS approaches, or example, must be fown by tuning the VLOC receiver to the proper requency and coupling the VLOC receiver to the external CDI (or HSI).

A selected approach may be activated or loaded. Oncean approach is selected, it may be activated or navigationrom the Procedures Page. Activating the approach

overrides the ‘enroute’ portion o the active fight plan, proceeding directly to the ‘approach’ portion (or a ullapproach, directly to the initial approach x). Activatingthe approach also initiates automatic CDI scaling transitionas the approach progresses.

In many cases, it may be easiest to ‘Load’ the ullapproach while still some distance away, enroute to thedestination airport. Later, i vectored to nal, use theollowing steps to select ‘Activate Vector-To-Final’—whichmakes the inbound course to the nal approach x (FAF)waypoint active. Otherwise, activate the ull approachusing the ’Activate Approach?’ option.

Activating an approach:

1) With an approach loaded in the active ight

plan, press the PROC Key to display theProcedures Page.

2) Turn the large right knob to highlight ‘ActivateApproach?’ and press the ENT Key.

The ‘Activate Vector-To-Final?’ option allows the pilotto activate the nal course segment o the approach. Thisoption assumes the pilot will receive vectors to the FAFand provides guidance to intercept the nal course, beorereaching the FAF.

Due to the variety o available approach procedures, the specic steps required will vary according to theapproach selected. Keep in mind the ollowing whilefying the approach:

• Selecting the destination airport as the lastwaypoint in the active fight plan, or using theDirect-to Key ensures that the desired waypointwill automatically appear when choosing the‘Select Approach?’ option rom the ProceduresPage. Otherwise, the airport should be selectedrst, then the approach procedure.

• As the aircraft progresses to each approachwaypoint, a waypoint alert message (‘NEXTDTK # # #º’) will appear along the bottom o thedisplay (see page 15).

• Turn advisories (‘TURN TO # # #º’) will appearalong the bottom o the display (see page 15)when the pilot should begin a course change (via

a standard rate turn).• For GPS-based approaches, receiver autonomous

integrity monitoring (RAIM) monitors satelliteconditions and alerts the pilot using an ‘INTEG’or ‘WARN’ annunciation at the bottom let cornero the display (see page 15) i protection limitscannot be maintained. I this occurs, the GPS

receiver should not be used or primary navigationguidance. Revert to an alternate navigationsource, or select an alternate destination airport.

• Within 30 nm of the destination airport, CDIscaling will transition rom 5.0 nm (enroutemode, ‘ENR’) to 1.0 nm (terminal mode, ‘TERM’)or when leaving the departure airport, rom 1.0 to5.0 nm. Within 2.0 nm o the nal approach x,GPS-based approaches will see a second transitionrom 1.0 to 0.3 nm (approach mode, ‘APR’).

• A ‘START PROC TRN’ prompt will appear alongthe bottom o the display to advise the pilotwhen the aircrat is at a sae distance to initiate aprocedure turn. The procedure turn is displayedon the Map Page, but guidance through the turnitsel is not provided.

• Alerts for proper holding pattern entry (e.g.,‘HOLD DIRECT’) are displayed along thebottom o the display. Waypoint sequencing isautomatically suspended (indicated by ‘SUSPdirectly above the OBS Key) at the holdingwaypoint. Press the OBS Key again to return

to automatic waypoint sequencing. For coursereversals, waypoint sequencing is suspendedor one trip around the holding pattern only(ater which it will return to automatic waypointsequencing).

FLYING THE MISSED APPROACH

• The CDI will guide the pilot through a DME arc. Just keep the needle centered to fy along the arc. When using an autopilot, the course select on the

CDI (or HSI) must be periodically updated withthe desired track (DTK).

• When crossing the missed approach point, ‘SUSP’will appear above the OBS Key, indicating thatautomatic sequencing o waypoint is suspended atthe missed approach point, and a ‘rom’ indicationwill appear on the CDI (or HSI).

Flying a missed approach:1) Press the OBS Key. The next waypoint in

the approach (MAHP; in this case ‘SWARM’

intersection) is automatically oered as thedestination waypoint.

2) Follow the missed approach procedures, aspublished on the approach plate, or properclimb and heading instructions.

3) An alert message along the bottom o thedisplay recommends entry procedures or the

holding pattern (e.g., ‘HOLD TEARDROP’).When lying the holding pattern, a timerappears on the Deault NAV Page. The timerautomatically resets on the outbound side othe hold when the aircrat turns abeam thehold waypoint. The timer again resets as thepilot turns inbound (within approximately 30°o the inbound course). This allows use ostandard timing (typically one minute) to ythe inbound and outbound legs o the hold.

4) The GNS 530 provides course guidance onlyon the inbound side o the holding pattern.

When leaving the holding pattern to re-lythe approach (or another approach) press thePROC Key to ‘Select Approach?’ or ‘ActivateApproach?’ as previously described. Or, use theDirect-to Key to select another destination.
