Go Back, Stand Still, Go Forward —Tommy Tenney, Up Is Down and You Die to Live

The process of relinquishment and preparation in life can get confusing at times.

Moses tried to lead the children of Israel out of Egypt, but things suddenly took a turn toward disaster.

He and the Israelites ended up at the shore of the Red Sea with Pharaoh’s army hot on their heels.

Pharaoh had just come from the deathbed of his firstborn and there was vengeance in his eyes and

violence in his heart.

His pursuit of the Jewish people was relentless, and Moses knew he was coming.

The people said, “We ought to go back to Egypt.”

Moses said, “Stand still.”

God said, “Go forward.”

Sometimes we find ourselves in a similar place. People around us ask, “What are you doing moving in

that direction? Go back to where you were comfortable.” Meanwhile, a leader you may respect may

say, “Maybe you ought to just stay put for a while. Maybe the timing is just not right.” The only way to

find your way among conflicting opinions is to ask this question: What does God say (in His Word)?

“Go forward.”

“For it had been better for us to serve the Egyptians, than that we

should die in the wilderness. And Moses said unto the people, Fear

ye not, stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord.”

—Exodus 14:12-14

The Second Gospel Sermon -Frank Chesser, Montgomery, Alabama

Genesis 12:3 is the second recorded Gospel sermon.

It is the second piece in God's spiritual puzzle of redemption. It looks backward to man's problem in Genesis 3:6 and forward to God's remedy in Calvary. It looks backward to man's separation from God in Genesis 3:6 and forward to man's reconciliation to God in Christ and the cross. It looks backward to man's despair in Genesis 3:6 and forward to man's hope in the blood of God's Son. It looks backward to the beginning of sin in Genesis 3:6 and forward to the closing of Christ's work for sin in John 19:30. God preached the Gospel to Abraham in Genesis 12:3 just as surely as Peter preached the Gospel on Pentecost in Acts 2. The only difference is that Genesis 12:3 looks forward to an event to be accomplished, and Acts 2 looks backward on the accomplishment of the event. Genesis 12:3 is the gospel in promise, and Acts 2 is the gospel in fact.

'And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the heathen through faith, preached before the gospel unto Abraham, saying, In thee shall all nations be blessed. So then they

which be of faith are blessed with faithful Abraham.'-Galatians 3:8-9

GOD’S WORD COMES FIRST • Daniel was unashamed because his message was unlike any

other (cp. 2:10, 28). • Daniel said God revealed the dream so Nebuchadnezzar would

be aware of what was coming (vv.28-30). • Daniel’s reply showed the limitations of men and the unlimit-

ed power of God (vv.27-28, 34-35). GOD’S REIGN IS SUPREME• Nebuchadnezzar was only concerned with himself and world

domination (cp. 2:1-13).• Daniel said in so many words, “You did not build this; God

granted you these things.” • Little did Nebuchadnezzar know, but his dream was a prophecy

of his own demise (vv.36-43).GOD’S KINGDOM HAS BEEN ESTABLISHED• Nebuchadnezzar’s dream culminates with the prediction of

God’s coming kingdom (v.44).• Daniel gave specific characteristics of God’s kingdom (v.44).• The messianic kingdom has come and it’s citizens are those

who’ve been born from above (Jn. 3:3, 5; Col. 1:13).

God’s people are to be “forth-tellers” (Col. 1:27-29; 2 Cor. 4:7).

We only have because God grants and allows (Rom. 8:28; 11:36).

If you have obeyed the gospel of Christ, you are a part of His kingdom and one step closer to His coming (Heb. 12:28; 1 Cor. 15:24; 2 Pet. 3).

Word SearchDaniel 2

“This is the dream. Now we will tell the interpretation of it before the king. 37 You, O king, are a king of kings. For the God of heaven has given you a kingdom, power, strength, and glory; 38 and wherever the children of men dwell, or the beasts of the field and the birds of the heaven, He has given them into your hand, and has made you ruler over them all—you are this head of gold. 39 But after you shall arise another kingdom inferior to yours; then another, a third kingdom of bronze, which shall rule over all the earth. 40 And the fourth kingdom shall be as strong as iron, inasmuch as iron breaks in pieces and shatters everything; and like iron that crushes, that kingdom will break in pieces and crush all the others. 41 Whereas you saw the feet and toes, partly of potter’s clay and partly of iron, the kingdom shall be divided; yet the strength of the iron shall be in it, just as you saw the iron mixed with ceramic clay. 42 And as the toes of the feet were partly of iron and partly of clay, so the kingdom shall be partly strong and partly fragile. 43 As you saw iron mixed with ceramic clay, they will mingle with the seed of men; but they will not adhere to one another, just as iron does not mix with clay. 44 And in the days of these kings the God of heaven will set up a kingdom which shall never be destroyed; and the kingdom shall not be left to other people; it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand forever. 45 Inasmuch as you saw that the stone was cut out of the mountain without hands, and that it broke in pieces the iron, the bronze, the clay, the silver, and the gold—the great God has made known to the king what will come to pass after this. The dream is certain, and its interpretation is sure.”
