4 GO FOR IT August 2012

By Bob Cox

4 GO FOR IT August 2012

I was driving along in my car yesterday morning, off to see another client when I realized that I was feeling totally happy and excited. Why? Because, in the previous 24 hours, I had convinced three very good clients to advertise in our magazine. The timing was perfect: It was just before our deadline for the August issue and the additional unexpected revenue would go a long way to helping my family catch up financially.

After the first sale, which happened the previous afternoon, I didn’t experience a sense of elation. I mostly felt the sensation of relief because it was a bit of an ordeal that took several visits and days to complete. The euphoria didn’t hit me until after the second sale, which also took several contacts to finish. When I went in to see client number three, I was practically bouncing off the walls like a teenager on energy drinks. I’m pretty sure my enthusiasm was contagious as my client said the most powerful three letter word in the English language, a word that every sales rep craves to hear…YES!

It was just a few seconds after the third sale when my mind decided to crash the party and became curious as to exactly why I was feeling such an extreme sense of elation. When I fessed up, this annoying thought crossed my mind, “Bob, you still aren’t there yet. You still need that external affirmation to achieve internal joy.” Of course, I knew my mind was right, but what a buzz kill!

When I first embarked on the journey of self improvement 20 years ago, I made the commitment to read something positive for at least 30 minutes every morning. During the

first few years, I had a blast because the concepts and ideas were new, fresh and illuminating. One of the most powerful concepts that has stuck with me over the years is this simple but profound affirmation: “I’m not excited because business is great…business is great because I’m excited!” For those of you who don’t own a business, no worries, the same principal applies by replacing the word ‘business’ with the word ‘life’. “I’m not excited because life is

great…life is great because I’m excited!”So, what does this all mean? It means that we have the

ability, through conscious decision making to feel a sense of joy and excitement whenever we want to. We don’t have to be hopelessly dependent on other people or external events to give us a valid reason to be genuinely happy. All we have to do is cut through the mindless clutter of 60,000 repetitious thoughts that the average person has each day and focus on just one thought that

leads us to feel excited and energized. When you first picked up this magazine, I’ll bet that you

were probably neither feeling terribly excited nor hopelessly bummed out, but probably somewhere in the middle, in a place

we’ll call Ho-Hum Ville. I know that address like the back of my hand, because that’s been my primary residence for over half a century.

Now, here’s some exciting news: You can take a vacation from Ho-Hum Ville right now by accessing the incredible power of your mind. All you have to do is think about just one thing that’s happening in your life that you are truly excited about. Once you have that thought, hold on tight and don’t allow any other thoughts or external stimulation to distract you. Focus on this thought by continually repeating it to yourself for as long as you can. Recruit all your senses, including sight, sound, smell and feel until it’s so close, it’s all you can think about. Have some fun with this experience by timing yourself to see how long it takes for you to feel lighter, brighter and genuinely enthusiastic. Don’t be surprised when your enthusiasm spreads to others, because it’s extremely contagious.

I often think that people are a lot like our solar system. A few people are warm and bright like the sun, shining bright and illuminated from within while everyone else orbits around them like planets and moons. The good news is we all have the power to be whatever celestial body we want to be. My advice is simple: Choose to become the star that you were destined to be by becoming a

master of your own mind. Choose your thoughts wisely so that you experience all the beauty that life has to offer. Why? Because you deserve it!

...it’s up to me. I’m sure there are many things in your community that you are proud of and concerned about. One of my favorite words is STEWARDSHIP. It’s about taking ownership and responsibility for something worth caring for and preserv-ing. It is not a responsibility we are given; it is a responsibility we take on.

This precept has been popularized in “Think Global, Act Local”. Here are just a few ways you can be a steward in your community:

• Frequent local businesses. A thriving business com-munity engenders a thriving neighborhood all around.

• Support local artists. Performing and visual artists are the pulse of our community. Let’s keep the arts alive with our patronage.

• Stay connected; be involved. No matter what the is-sue, concern or challenge, “it takes a village” and we need to step up where and when we can.

“Today, more than ever before, life must be characterized by a sense of Universal responsibility...” ~ The 14th Dalai Lama

You don’t have to be a steward to the entire Universe but do adopt a small segment of it. (Thanks!)

Under-promise & Over-perform: The Valley Motorwerks StoryBy Bob Cox

I feel extremely fortunate and privileged to have worked with Walter Ford, the owner of Valley Motorwerks in Rancho Cordova for the past three years. He has worked diligently to build a reputation for running an outstanding auto repair shop that specializes in BMW’s, Mini Cooper’s, and now Audi’s and Volkswagen’s. I enjoy working with Walter because he’s not afraid to share how he really feels about a subject. I find this quality thoroughly refreshing, because you always know where you stand with Walter. He has that rare character trait that’s required to be completely honest and direct…courage. I have found that the people who have the courage to be authentic are usually easy to respect.

Another reason Walter is respected is because he belongs to a rare group of people who have the passion, drive and determination to run a business that offers no guarantees and no safety nets. He expects excellence from himself and the people he works with and he almost always gets it. On those rare occasions he doesn’t, he’s quick to own it and find a solution. For these reasons, it shouldn’t be a big surprise that Valley Motorwerks has grown and succeeded in an economically challenged market that has devoured thousands of small and large businesses for the last six years.

After all the years working with Walter, I was curious to know more about what he did before he opened Valley Motorwerks, so I saw him the other day and asked him. “I actually left college to go work for New Dimensions, where I was a service manager. We were the premier Volkswagen shop on the west coast. Unfortunately, they went out of business a few years later when the owner sold and the company got stretched in many different directions. My

family has always owned businesses, so I have been involved in family businesses and have been self-employed pretty much my whole life. I understand about customer service and consumer expectations since a very young age,” explained Walter.

Q: Has your background helped prepare you to own your own business?

A: Yes. And when I was the IS manager at Aerojet, my wife and I owned BMW’s at the time and we couldn’t find a shop that would do what they say and say what they do. You might think that would be a real simple thing, but whether

it was a lack of communication or whatever shortcomings they had in the processes in the shop, I was just completely unhappy. So, I left Aerojet in 2005 and had the opportunity to do something else. I saw a market opportunity in BMW service and repair.

Q: Did you open Valley Motorwerks because of your dissat-isfying experiences that accumulated over the years?

A: Yes, I mean you would drop your car off at seven in the morning, go to work, arrange for a ride at five to take you back to the shop and then call the shop that afternoon to see if it was done and they would say, “The car is ready to go, come and pick it up.” You would get there and they hadn’t even touched it! So, I would have preferred if they called me sometime before then and told me that it wasn’t going to be ready, so that I could’ve planned my day and I wouldn’t even have been upset. I would’ve said “Okay, things happen, no worries, I’ll pick it up tomorrow.”

Q: How is the customer service at Valley Motorwerks different from your past experiences?

A: One of the things that we strive for here is managing customer expectations and whenever I make a promise to deliver. I think that’s what we try to do the most. The moment we find out that something isn’t going to be done on time, the shop policy is to call the customer immediately. Information and knowledge are power and we need to empower our customers at every turn. If they want to look at every part, we take it out of the car and explain every intricate detail of why we did it.

Q: What do your customers appreciate most about doing business with you?

A: We’re honest, upfront, and yes, we make mistakes but we always point it out immediately and take care of it without question. If you have a problem with anything we did, pick up the phone and call me. We will handle it. Bearing that in mind, if you feel at any point you aren’t getting what you need then I would highly

The technicians at Valley Motorwerks take their time to answer their customers questions and explain every aspect of the repair when asked

recommend you go somewhere else. I would appreciate knowing why though, so that we can change and we can do better. Life is about constant improvement. If you aren’t improving every day either through your work or personal life, then you’re stuck. The worst thing in life is to be stuck and not improving and not being better and happier. Improving is what drives us forward.

Q: Speaking of change, I understand that you are now offering service on Audi’s and Volkswagen’s. Why did you decide to expand your service beyond BMW’s and Mini Coopers?

A: When we first opened, BMW was the main thrust of our business. BMW then bought Mini Cooper, so Mini Cooper was brought in as part of the BMW family. The economy has not been well and we have noticed some market opportunities in the Volkswagen and Audi field. This goes back to my original experience with the premier Volkswagen shop on the West Coast. Quite frankly, I have modeled this whole business around what Tim Hildebrand, (owner of the Volkswagen shop I worked in) did and the way he offered service to his customers, because it was unparalleled at the time. It was clear that what he did over many, many years worked. Plus, I have a warm spot in my heart for Volkswagen and Audi and I always have. I feel that over the last seven years, we have established ourselves as being the best of the best in BMW repair, but it is time to offer our current customer base who also own Volkswagens and Audis, similar quality of service that we have been giving them on their BMW’s. We have hired a multi-year veteran of Volkswagen dealerships and we are going to continue to hire the talent that it takes to provide the same level of service that we provide our BMW customers.

Q: I imagine your clients are ecstatic over this, especially the ones who own Volkswagens and Audis.

A: Yes and we are too. It became clear over time that a lot of our BMW customers had Volkswagens and Audis and we were doing them a disservice by not working on their cars directly. They were always calling us for help, so why not just bring it here to begin with.

Q: What are the advantages of bringing your car here? A: I think if you build your business correctly, and what

I mean by that is that if you decide you want to specialize in something, then you need to do it 100%. You hire techs that are trained by the manufacturer and install parts that are used by the manufacturers. You can pick quality and service, or price. Luckily for us, we aren’t a dealership and don’t have a lot of overhead so we have chosen quality and service to give our customers. The price is automatic and we are lucky in that respect. In some cases we are 65% less an hour than a dealership. You get the same guys, same training and same parts. We are Sacramento’s best dealership alternative and we have been for years, we are just expanding in the Volkswagen/Audi fields.

Q: Does Valley Motorwerks offer more flexibility than the dealerships?

A: Absolutely. There are very few occasions where we will shy away from using a dealer part. In the area of brake pads, German cars tend to have black wheels from the brake pads they put on the cars. The brake pads on these cars are very high quality and work very well. However, technology has moved forward and we can offer a ceramic brake pad that doesn’t dust but still offers an equal amount of braking quality, pedal feel and life. We will guarantee those as long as we guarantee a factory pad. We are able to think outside the box and provide more solutions to problems. If there is a design flaw, which sometimes there are, we won’t just put the part back in, we will put in something that we consider an improvement to prevent it from failing again. Prevention is really what we’re about. Why would I put on a part I know is going to fail in a short amount of time if there is a way of improvement? The dealership cannot though because they are bound by their own rules.

Q: What’s the best advice you can offer someone who’s looking for an honest and trustworthy shop?

A: Any customer, whether it’s mine or anybody else’s that is uncomfortable with where they are going, if they need to shop around or make that phone call… if they need to say I want to come down and look at your shop and if there is any hesitance by the owners or any of the service people, then you really need to go somewhere else. We’re sort of like daycare for cars. Anytime you are coming to look at your car, I am more than happy to bring you in and it’s not going to be filthy dirty. Your car is going to be clean and washed when you get it back. We absolutely guarantee that you are going to get the same experience with the dealer, but here, you are going to save $65-$80 an hour, depending on what kind of car you own.

Editor’s notes: Valley Motorwerks is located at 11401 White Rock Road in Rancho Cordova, CA. For more information about Valley Motorwerks, contact Walter Ford at (916) 636-9526 or visit their website www.vmwerks.com.

Can dentists inject Botox?Close to half the states in the US allow

dentists to perform Botox procedures in all of the oral and maxillofacial areas of the face. Dental healthcare professionals are experts in not only the teeth but the facial nerves, muscles of mastication and muscles of facial expression. Dentists are also very proficient in placing injections in the oral and maxillofacial muscles and are one of the only healthcare specialists that can anesthetize the area before being treated with Botox for a comfortable experience.

What is Botox?Botox is a trade name for botulinum

toxin, which comes in the form of a puri-fied protein. Botulinum toxin A is the most commonly used form and has thousands of literature and scientific research supporting its use.

How does Botox work?Botox is injected into the facial muscles

and within a few hours it works to attach itself to the nerve endings of the motor muscles. This affects the nerve transmission into these muscles which allows these mus-cles to relax and not contract so the skin above these muscles will become nice and smooth. In the case of its therapeutic uses it acts in the same way to relax the muscle and decrease the muscles intensity.

How long does it last?Botox is a temporary treatment and

lasts from 3-4 months. It is similar to teeth whitening in that it is temporary and needs to be refreshed from time to time.

Is it commonly used?Yes, Botox has been around for over 21

years and is the most commonly performed minimally invasive cosmetic procedure in North America. Nearly 2.5 million cosmetic procedures were done with Botox in 2008 according to the American Society of Aes-thetic Plastic Surgery and it continues to be on the rise. Women accounted for 92% of the total cosmetic procedures done.

What are the therapeutic dentaluses for Botox?

Botox can be used for not only smoothing foreheads, getting rid of crows feet, and enhancing lips but also for the managing of TMJ, bruxism, clenching and muscle pain. It is also commonly used to

Dynamic DentalCaring Dentistry For The Entire Family

treat a gummy smile (a high lip line that shows too much gums), filling in a space (black triangle) between your teeth and gums and tension headaches.

How does Botox work for TMJ?Botox is a muscle relaxer and can

greatly reduce the intensity on the muscle contractions that contribute to TMJ and fa-cial pain. It can give the patient significant relief. We have TMJ patients that have got-ten the bruxism applicances, have done full mouth reconstructions, and are still at wits end at trying to find the right answer that will help them with their TMJ and facial pain. Botox can play a very important role in reducing or eliminating their facial pain and muscle tension disorder.
