Go Green, Go Global – Poster Competition. You and Climate Change.

About the Poster Competition

The theme of this Eco-Schools and Trócaire poster competition is ‘Go Green, Go Global’ and it is

asking pupils to think about how their own daily routine could be improved to reduce their carbon

footprint and lessen the impact on those countries around the world which are already feeling the

harmful effects of Global Warming and Climate Change.

The competition suggests links to helpful teaching resources with which to approach the topic. It

addresses the Eco-Schools Global Perspective topic which naturally links to many more Eco-Schools

topics and will help you work towards Eco-Schools awards. The resources suggested have Curriculum

links in the areas of Language and Literacy, Mathematics and Numeracy, The World Around us, The

Arts, Personal Development and Religious Studies.

The poster could represent a view of energy, transport, food or water issues – or a mixture of all

these things or anything else that the pupil feels is relevant about their relationship with Climate

Change and the Global Perspective topic. We are looking for creative, innovative and original ideas.

Getting Started

Ask the pupils the following questions to get them thinking about the Global impact of Climate

Change and how they can make changes to make a real difference:

Do you understand the difference between Climate Change and the weather? (This video

produced by Trócaire will help.)

What causes Climate Change? (Hint: greenhouse gases such as Co2.)

What do you do every day that contributes to Climate Change? (Hint: anything that

produces greenhouse gases such as driving in the car, using imported food

products/clothing, electricity production, improper waste disposal/landfill sites etc.)

Do you think that Climate Change will affect people around the world equally? (The Teaching

Resources listed below will help with this.)

What actions could you take in your daily routine to help prevent Climate Change and help

other people around the world? (Encourage pupils to use these ideas for inspiration for their

poster creation.)

Teaching Resources

Trócaire has a wide range of excellent teaching resources: Go Green, Go Global developed with Eco-Schools and Trócaire explores Global Perspective and Global Citizenship through KS2 classroom activities. Climate Change and Climate Justice explains the the concept of climate change and how it affects people differently around the world through a range of KS1 and KS2 teaching ideas. Eco-Schools has developed guides to approaching the 10 Eco-Schools topic areas: Eco-Inspiration Global Perspective suggests helpful ways to introduce this topic to your Eco-Schools work using St Clare’s Convent Primary School as a case study.

Competition Information

• The competition closing date is Friday 16th October 2015.

• The competition is open to Primary Schools KS1 and KS2 pupils.

• Entry Forms must be completed for each entry and securely attached to the back of each

poster. Posters without an attached entry form will not be considered.

• Entries may be posted to the address below or scanned and emailed:

• We encourage you to run the competition as a class or whole school initiative, however due

to the large numbers of entries we ask that you limit your submissions to your top 5 posters

per school.

• Don’t forget that even the best ideas need to be well presented. Encourage pupils to think of

interesting and attractive ways of presenting their ideas. Neat lines, good use of colour and

clear writing will add to the appeal of the entry.

Competition Prize

The winning school will be presented with the unique, bespoke sculpture, “Together We Can Build a

Better World”. Created by local artist Gloria Perry, from Urney Creations, with the help of pupils at

the Eco-Schools 20th Anniversary Celebration Event in March 2015.

The sculpture is made partly from recycled materials and depicts children working together to create

a greener planet. It is weatherproof and could be displayed inside or outside your school.

All schools who submit competition entries will receive a certificate of participation from Eco-

Schools and Trócaire.

Competition Criteria and Rules

Pupils must create their posters themselves.

Entries could include the following formats (all should be submitted on A3 or A4 paper):

• Drawings: 2D “kinetic” drawings or pop-up pictures could be produced.

• Paintings: pupils could paint their pictures.

• Collages: pupils could recycle materials to use for their collages.

• A mixture of the above

Please do not submit a 3D model. Please do not use any templates for pupils to colour in.

• Each poster must be accompanied by a completed official entry form securely attached to

the back of the poster (we suggest glue or staples – paperclips can become separated).

Terms and Conditions

Pupils must have created their poster themselves.

If the poster contains contributions from other people or material that pupils have not created - i.e.

photographs or images off the web - pupils are responsible for obtaining written permission to use

such work.

Eco-Schools reserves the right to use the winning entries for promotional purposes. Winning pupils

may also be asked to appear in publicity photographs and media articles.

Selection Process and Announcement

A judging panel will judge all entries and select winners. Judges decisions will be final. Winners will

be informed by November 2015.

Judges will be looking for colourful, innovative poster designs that address the issues of Climate

Change, from a personal and Global Perspective, and suggesting solutions to the issue.

The competition is funded by Trócaire who sponsor the Eco-Schools Global Perspective Topic.
