Halloween is my favorite holiday. Not only is it an excuse to dress up in costume and scare the living bejesus out of someone without getting a visit from the cops, it

provides ample opportunity to take ghost tours in one of the most haunted regions of the United States.

Given that New England was one of the first areas of the U.S. to be colonized, it's rife with centuries-old houses, crumbling forts, sunken ships and old cemeteries that are supposedly filled with restless spirits. And the best way to explore them is with a guided ghost tour that provides

macabre historical facts not often found in textbooks while giving you a good old-fashioned Halloween fright.

Here are some ghost tours coming up in southern Maine this month. There are sure to be more that have yet to be announced, so check back each week in GO for the latest haunted happenings.

WICKED WALKING TOURS will kick off its Halloween ghost tours this Friday and Saturday, continuing through Oct. 31. Guides take patrons on a one-hour, less than half-mile walking

tour through the Old Port and other purportedly haunted sites in downtown Portland. It's also family-friendly, so feel free to bring the kids along.

This is one of the most popular ghost tours in southern Maine, and advance ticket purchases are required. Prices are $16 for adults, $13 for seniors, and $11 for children ages 12 and under. SPIRITS ALIVE will present "Walk Among the Shad­ows," its annual Halloween ghost tour of Portland's Eastern Cemetery, Oct. 18-20 and Oct. 25-27. Actors portray people buried in the city's oldest cemetery, which include everyone from opposing War of 1812 ship captains to victims of the great fire of 1866. And because this cemetery, which was established in 1668, is usually closed to the public, it's one of only a few chances you'll have to visit.

My family took one of these tours a couple of years ago, and it was well worth the price of admission ($10 for adults; $5 for children under age 12). Tours begin at 6:30 p.m. This year's theme is "On Land and at Sea - Portland in the War of 1812."

If you'd rather be a tour guide than a tour taker, Spirits Alive is currently seeking volunteers to be "specters." Go to spiritsalive.org for information.

THE HAUNTING at Parsonsfield Seminary is more of a traditional haunted house attraction than a ghost tour, but as there have been purported sightings of actual paranor­mal activity at the 19th-century former Free Will Baptist school, you'll never know what you'll see while stumbling around its dark corridors.

The Haunting is open 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Oct. 19-20 and Oct. 26-27. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for children ages 12 and under. The seminary is located at Route 160 and 504 North Road in North Parsonsfield. Parental discretion is advised. Call 793-8825 for information.

THE BRICKSTORE MUSEUM in Kennebunk will host its annual All Souls Walk on one day only, Oct. 27. Costumed guides will take visitors on a tour of Hope Cemetery and regale them with the often tragic tales of the people buried there. This family-friendly tour concludes with refresh­ments in the museum.

Tours begin at 1 p.m. and end at 4 p.m., and cost $10 per person ($30 maximum per family). An All Soul's Dinner will follow at Duffy's Tavern & Grill at 7 p.m. for an ad­ditional $25 per person. You do not need to take the tour to attend the dinner or vice versa. Call 985-4802 or visit brickstoremuseum.org.

The Americana rock trio Toughcats has just released its third album, "Woodenball." The band consists

of Jake Greenlaw on drums, percus­sion, guitar, lead and harmony vocals; Joe Nelson on acoustic and electric guitars, bass, percussion, lead and

harmony vocals; and Colin Gulley on acoustic and electric banjos and guitar.

Making Noise when did Tough-u cats first become a

band? During the summer of 2004. Colin was

organizing a benefit concert on North Haven. Jake was playing in one band, and Joe was playing some solo stuff. Another group was needed. At the last minute, the three of us worked up three songs and performed them. The audience was really into it. And we were too. So we kept doing it. We didn't try to start a band. It just happened.

How did you choose the band name? Joe came up with the name. He was talk­

ing to a friend on Vinalhaven who had just come back from a night in Rockland on the mainland. His friend made reference to the Rockland toughcats, as in the tough characters hanging out and starting fights around the bars and docks late at night.

Do you all still live up that way? Jake is still living on North Haven full

time. Joe and Colin live in Portland at the moment.

fore it? How has the band evolved over the past couple of years?

In the past, we tried to keep our record­ings true to what we could do live with the songs. This time around, we didn't limit ourselves in that way and it opened up a lot of possibilities. We are really happy with how it turned out. We have always thought of ourselves as a rock band, but have sometimes been trapped by the perspective on what having a banjo and resonator guitar means. We used a lot of electric instruments, including electric banjo, on this album.

What was it like working with (pro­ducer) Jeff Lipton? How did you hook up with him?

Jeff was recommended to us by a mutual friend. We are also big fans of a lot of the bands and labels he has worked with. He

A tasty stew of musical fl avors, from country to indie to blues

“Junkyard Stew” is not what it seems. The new album by Scarborough band The Strangely Possibles starts

off simply enough with the calm country shuffl e of the lead track, “Wannabe.”

Singer Al Thompson delivers simple, direct lyrics with a whispery, earnest vocal that’s sort of a cross between ironic indie and heartfelt modern country. One minute or so into the tune, you think you know exactly what you’re in for. But then small, subtle touches appear that elevate something that could have been run of the mill to something extraordinary.

Winsome female backing vocals, a lonely honky-tonk piano and sweet but sad cries from a violin take this song to another realm entirely. And that’s just the opening track!

The band ups the intensity and the tem-po with tracks such as “Venice,” featuring a grittier, Springsteen-esque vocal from Thompson and some great keyboard ac-cents courtesy of Flash Allen. The violins are there too, but sounding less sorrowful and more joyful. Oh, and did I mention the horn section? Unexpected, but somehow perfect.

A sad cello and a gorgeous female vocal mark “Lucky #7” as one of the stand-out tracks of the album, and “Let Me Know” is a perfect re-creation of the country-tinged rock of the early ’70s, with the keyboards adding just a hint of late-’70s New Wave.

Elsewhere, “Blood on that Guitar” boasts a downright danceable backbeat coupled with just enough jangly guitar to keep the dance party going all night long. The driving and dynamic “Country Song” features a great sing-along chorus delivered in a terrifi c gospel choir style. And the closing track “So Simple” starts off almost jazz-like, then morphs into something almost un-classifi able.

“Junkyard Stew” is beautifully produced by Steve Drown, which couldn’t have been an easy task, given the number of voices and musicians involved. The band wisely thanks Drown for helping to “take it to the next level.”

two dozen friends and musicians, includ-ing local veterans Spencer Albee, Anna Lombard and Kate Schrock (to name a few), all of whom help give the album a big bold sound that truly puts this music in a class by itself.

There are so many different styles on “Junkyard Stew” that fans of just about any genre will fi nd plenty to enjoy. From country to indie rock, blues, disco and ev-erything in between (sometimes all within the space of a single song), The Strangely Possibles serve up more than enough musical variety to satisfy even the most jaded “heard-it-all-before” hipster.

In August, they were convicted andsentenced to two years imprisonment,sparking outcries from around the globe.An appeals hearing has been scheduledfor this Wednesday.

The plight of the band and the ensuingcontroversy became all the more acuteto Spektor while she was visiting herhomeland.

"I think it's really sad and I think that,unfortunately, it's really not surprising.It's really hard to be part of any kind ofopposition in Russia. They really liketo make examples of people," she said."Freedom has a way of spreading, andpeople get inspired, and when they seesomebody succeed in some way they justtry to kill it at the root, and it's very sad.

"You always want to think that thingsare progressing, and then instead of prog-ress you get kind of shocked back into 'Ohno, this is what it's like, and this is whatit's always been.'"

But Spektor also sees things throughanother lens.

"I think that people are still inspiredover there. I felt it," she said. "We talkedto people about how they felt, and wetried to gauge things. There is a lot ofhope, especially with young people. Theyreally want to have freedom and connec-tion to the arts outside of Russia."

Spektor returns to Portland with aMonday-night show at the State Theatre.The last time she was here was in 2005 insupport of her 2004 "Soviet Kitsch" album- first as the opening act for The DresdenDolls at Space Gallery, then a few monthslater at Bull Moose Music in Scarbor-ough, where she recorded a live EE

She has gained substantial momen-tum since then with the 2006 release of

"Begin to Hope," "Far" in 2009 and "WhatWe Saw From the Cheap Seats," whichcame out in May. The latter entered theBillboard charts at No. 3, and Spektor'sFacebook page is closing in on a millionand a half fans.

Spektor has been a New Yorker sinceimmigrating to the U.S. with her family.Piano lessons started when she was 6, butwere in jeopardy when her family couldn'tafford a piano once in New York. So shefound one in a local synagogue.

Soon after, fate intervened. Spektor'sfather, Ilya, a photographer and violin-ist, had a chance encounter with anotherviolinist, Samuel Marder. Marder is mar-ried to Sonia Vargas, who's on the facultyat the Manhattan School of Music. Freepiano lessons, which lasted for years,ensued.

Spektor said she's still close with thecouple, and they attend all her shows inNew York. "They're a big part of my fam-ily."

October marks the launch of a three-month tour for Spektor, which includesthe U.S., New Zealand and Australia.Leading up to it, she's's been keepingplenty busy.

"I've been in the celebrating of Jewishholidays world with my family, so that'sbeen great, and seeing friends and justtrying to catch up," she said.

She also spent some time in Los Ange-les and recently attended the MTV VideoMusic Awards, where her video for "Allthe Rowboats" was a nominee for BestArt Direction. (The award went to KatyPerry's video for "Wide Awake.")

"It was kind of a cool but strange experi-ence," she said. "I've never done anykind of a red carpet thing, so it definitelywas interesting."

has worked with Merge Records and done most of the records put out by Numero Group, which are both fantastic labels. He has worked with Spoon, Bon Iver, Andrew Bird, The Magnetic Fields, LCD Sound-system, Arcade Fire, Jeff Tweedy and the list goes on and on. We think he did a great job with "Woodenball."

Are there any sources of musical in­spiration that the three of you share?

We are pretty different from one another but have always had a very strong and natural musical bond from the first mo­ment we played together.

When we started out eight years ago, we were coming from different musical places, which had a big influence on our sound. Over the past eight years, we have all really influenced each other a lot. Which has also had a big influence on our sound.

When it comes down to it, we all have a very similar passion for playing, perform­ing and being creative, and that is the driving force behind Toughcats.

What's next for Toughcats? We just put out this new album but are

actually writing and working on a lot of new songs at the moment. We are also making music videos and pursuing other creative endeavors. We are playing some shows around New England over the rest of this year, and there is a good chance we will be doing a larger national tour with the album sometime this winter.

Darned near an instant classic. Tim Burton has taken "Franken-weenie," the animated

short that launched his career and expanded it into a vivid and moving essay on science and love - the love a budding middle-school scientist, Victor Franken­stein, has for his dog Sparky.

That was the kernel of the original 1984 "Frankenweenie," back at the beginning of Burton's career. Burton gives that genius concept full voice in a rich, deli­cately-textured, 3-D jewel in the stop-motion animation style.

Victor (voiced by Charlie Tah­an) is a loner, a smart kid who spends hours in the attic, fiddling with science projects. He's pretty much friendless, save for his beloved weenie dog, Sparky.

Mom (Catherine O'Hara) indulges him, but Dad (Martin Short) wants the boy to get out, make some friends and take up a sport. Victor just wants to come up with a project for the big sci­ence fair at school.

Dad suggests they "compro­mise," and to Dad, that means "nobody gets what they want," so Victor finds himself at the plate, struggling to master baseball.

Miracle of miracles, he hits a home run. But a highlight of his young life is crushed when Sparky chases the home-run ball into the street and is killed.

Victor, a morose, quiet kid, mourns in a morose, quiet way Mom's reassurance that no one you ever love dies, "they just move into a special place in your heart," isn't enough. It's only when Victor sits through a demented, inspired thunder­storm lesson by his Eastern Bloc science teacher (the always inspired Martin Landau) that he has his answer. Mr. Rzykruski has made a dead frog's muscles twitch with electricity. Victor will dig up Sparky, patch and stitch him up, attach a positive and negative lead on his neck (bolts,

of course) and thunder-storm jolt his beloved dog back to life.

Burton revels in the props and appliances Victor re-purposes for his project. But he ensures that there's an animated warmth to the boy's connection to this playful goof of a mutt, who is pretty much his old self once he's revived - save for the odd body part that falls off.

There are rival students (who look like extras from old Uni­versal horror films of the '30s) aiming to beat Victor at the science fair, and a cute Goth neighbor girl (Winona Ryder, of course) with a poodle whom Sparky sparks for. And there are big messages here, about what makes a child's connection to a dog so primal, and death and

Emerging film festivalfulfilling an ambitious plan

I n 2010, then-University of SouthernMaine student Tyler Johnston thoughtit was a shame that a city like Portland

didn't have its own film festival.In 2012, welcome to the third annual

Portland Maine Film Festival."Portland has the

largest populationcenter in the state,"said Johnston from, ofall places, the Trini-dad + Tobago FilmFestival, where hisdocumentary "FiveBones" is competing."It just makes senseto have a festival here.And we're networking,inviting filmmakers,

having parties, connecting with MECAand other film festivals in Maine, learningfrom them. PMFF is really about buildingthe film community in Maine."

Ambitious words. But the PMFF hasborne them out, refining its mission in itsbrief history to, as Johnston puts it, "be-come a festival that can grow, to curatereally good, meaningful films and emerg-ing Maine filmmakers."

To that end, executive director Johnstonand his team have put together a variedand ambitious roster of films and film-making workshops designed to highlightthe best of the Maine film scene, provideguidance and inspiration to Maine film-makers and, for the rest of us, just give usa chance to see some great movies.

On the Maine film front, there areFriday's two "Made in Maine" short filmblocks, featuring 12 films from Mainefilmmakers along with Sunday's feature-length documentary "Fambu Tok" (fromPortland filmmakers) about the peacemovement in Sierra Leone. "We had liter-ally hundreds of Maine submissions thisyear," said Johnston, "and we were able tochoose the best."

For aspiring or active filmmakers,PMFF has lined up several Hollywoodinsiders, including screenwriter/directorWayne Beach, media executive LouiseRosen and Bahamas film commissionerCraig Woods, among others. They joinMaine moviemakers such as Kate Kamin-

ski from USM and Donna Galluzzo fromthe Salt Institute of Documentary Studies,and local actress Krystal Kenville.

All of them will participate in variouspanels and Q&As dedicated to, as John-ston explains, "developing that kind offilm economy in Maine. One or two majorfilms in Maine would be a huge boost toour creative economy."

As for features, Johnston is particularlyenthusiastic about the indie "DreamWorld," which he calls "a touching, artsyromantic comedy drama. Low budget,with a strong, universal story, but one thatwill really hit home for a lot of students."

In all, Johnston's dream for a trulyambitious Portland film festival seemsto be a reality. As he puts it, "I wanted tohelp build community among filmmakersacross the state and develop Portland asa destination for film, and to support oneanother as filmmakers. This is their filmfestival."

Because this is a Tim Burtonfilm, the set and effects are top-notch, and thehumor campy and over-the-top, an approachthat may not work for every project Burtontackles but is certainly appropriate in this venue.Rated PG-13. The variousplot threads get a bit unraveled near the end,but Cortes is a creative and skillful filmmakerwho manages to keep all the balls in the air longenough to merit a viewing. Showing no signsof slowing down in its seventh season (andeven fewer signs of getting around to solvingits titular mystery), fans of such fare as "Scrubs"and "Friends" would do well to spend sometime with this engaging and hilarious bunch. istory will be made on Wednesday, when Cirque du Soleil comes to Portland for the first time.

The Montreal-based troupe, which mixes colorful circus arts with the energy and spirit of street entertainment, will perform eight times over five days at the Cumberland County Civic Center.

Cirque du Soleil has made its rep­

utation for thrilling audiences with performances that combine human feats of wonder, strength, dexter­ity and agility, including juggling, balancing, jumping and spinning.

"Saltimbanco" features a cast of 51. It will showcase acrobatics and athleticism, but no live animals. All of the music will be performed live, and the show is full of color, drama and spectacle, said "Saltimbanco" artistic director Neelanthi Vadivel.

The fresh, well-prepared fare at Teriyaki Exchange earns praise from our reviewer. 'm always up for trying out a new restaurant, so when I got wind that Teriyaki Exchange had set up shop in South Portland, I called dibs faster than you can say "stir-fry."

Upon arrival, it became quite ap­parent that teriyaki was just the tip of the iceberg of what the place offered. A smiling soul gave me a menu, and it took me several minutes to

wrap my head - and appetite - around it. From all sorts of sushi and soups to noodle and rice dishes and, of course, a world of teriyaki, it was an impressive list.

But would it pass muster? After much debate, I opted for the Chicken Teriyaki Combo ($5.99) and a cup of miso soup ($2.29), and headed back to my office.

Upon opening the paper bag and the lid on the

container, I had an immediate realization: This was way too much food for one person, even me. In fact - and I can't believe I'm saying this - might I suggest that Teriyaki Exchange tone down its portion sizes?

Rather than binge myself into oblivion, I shared the wealth by giving the miso soup to a woman who sits behind me and a sizeable amount of the chicken dish to the guy who sits in front of me. The only caveat was that they chime in with their feedback. It was a win-win situation.

There was nothing left for me to do but dive in. While I've dabbled in chop-stickery it's never pretty, so I went with the conventional fork. Read: I can shove more food in my face that way It took all my calming powers to slow down enough to truly savor the flavor, and I'm sure glad

M y roommate and I decided to headinto Portland for a midweek nightout. Our destination? Dock Fore in

Portland's Old Port.As we crossed Fore Street, Angle spot-

ted the large Shipyard Pumpkinheadposter advertising $1.95 pints from 3 to 7p.m. That price is pretty hard to beat inPortland bars.

When we walked in, admittedly wefelt like strangers walking into Cheers.Despite the mixed-age groups enjoyinghappy hour, Dock Fore is definitely a placewhere regulars go because everybodyknows their names. On the flip side - ifyou walk in and nobody knows you, youfeel a bit like the things that don't belong.

But for a Tuesday evening, the smallbar was hopping with happy hour-goers.Angie squeezed between patrons to reachthe bar and order a Pumpkinhead. Whenthe bartender handed over her drink, itwasn't your average 16-ounce glass, but a20-ounce pint.

"This place may be a hole-in-the-wallbar," Angie said to me as she took her firstsip of beer. "But it's heaven in a hole."

Pumpkinhead for $1.95 isn't the onlysteal Dock Fore has to offer. On weekdays,a happy hour from 3 to 7 p.m. features$1.95 and $2.95 pints, $1.95 domesticbottles, $2.95 imported bottles and welldrinks, and $1 off glasses of wine.

While we were there, the bar also had acommunal plate of crackers, cheese, veg-gies and dip set out for patrons to enjoy.

The specials don't disappear on week-ends either, when you can't go wrong with$2.95 mimosas and a $3.95 Bloody Mary.

Dock Fore in Portland has many specials and a friendly vibe to recommend it.

Throughout the fall, the televisionsmounted behind the bar feature footballon Sundays, with seven NFL games onat once. With that come specials thatinclude $8.95 Longtrail IPA pitchers andfree hot dogs and peanuts.

All over the walls hung a number ofpaintings by local artist Susan Roux. Thevibrant-colored paintings were beautifuland framed in gold, and were a stark con-

trast to the rest of the bar, which featuredhappy hour and beer posters.

Dock Fore is your run-of-the-mill place,which is unusual for the Old Port. Theneighborhood bar sits amidst a bar scenelittered with nightclubs, sports pubs anddance floors.

It's a place to chill, sip a drink and chatwith friends. It's not a place to go shakeyour booty, drink the latest trendy cock-

tail or play some bar games.Maybe not featuring the latest trend

is what keeps Dock Fore's doors open,though. Owner Shaun McCarthy said it'sbeen open for more than 30 years.

I'm sure the regular crowd will keep itgoing for another 30 years or more.

Sometimes it's good to venture beyond local breweriesFor the past few months

while I have been writingabout local beers and beer

events, I also have been tastinga variety of beers from otherplaces. While Maine createssome of the best beers in theworld, you can't be a locavoreall of the time.

I was first attracted toSlumbrew by its Porter SquarePorter because son Zach-ary lived for several years inthat Somerville, Mass., neighborhood.This was a rich, almost black porterwith a good rich mouthfeel and a lot ofchocolate malt flavors, coming in at 6.5percent alcohol.

After that, I had some Hoppy Sol andRising Sun, two different ales made withthe same kind of yeast.

Hoppy Sol is a wheat beer that pours asunset orange. It has a good wheat andcitrus flavor, and is 5.5 percent alcohol.This was a pleasant take on a hefewei-zen.

Rising Sun is an altbier or dampfbier,made with all barley malt but using the

yeast traditionally used ina wheat beer. The color is adarker orange to red, and is abit hazy. This has a wonderfullybig and malty flavor with a bitof fruitiness in the background,and is 5.7 percent alcohol.

All of these beers come in 22-TOni AtWGll ounce bombers, and I think the

price was in the $6 range.Somerville Brewing Co.,

which is behind the Slumbrewbrand, has a small brewery

in Somerville where the owners createrecipes. But the company makes most ofits beers as tenant brewers at MercuryBrewing Co. in Ipswich, Mass.

I WROTE about Wilco Tango Foxtrotby Lagunitas Brewing out of Petaluma,Calif., in early summer, and I continueddrinking the company's beer over thecourse of the summer.

Since then, I have had Lagunitas' HopStoopid, Little Sumpin' Ale, Maximusand Censored. They all follow the Ger-man beer laws, which say that they canbe made only with water, barley, hops

and yeast.The lowest-alcohol one of the group

was Censored, a rich copper ale and theone that I liked the best. It had a good,rich malty flavor, with enough hops tomake it interesting.

The others were in the 7 to 8 percentalcohol range, and were all hoppier thanI like for routine drinking - althoughLittle Sumpin' was quite good.

I got the Hop Stoopid in a 22-ouncebomber, and the others in a mixed six-pack from the Bier Cellar. I think I paidabout $6 for the bomber and about $14for the mixed six-pack.

MY WIFE Nancy's favorite cousin,John, brought us a six-pack of beerfrom Nashoba Valley Brewery in Bolton,Mass.

This is a combination winery, brewery,restaurant and apple farm that is familyowned and doing all sorts of differentbusinesses to keep the farm going.

Nancy and I really liked the NashobaValley IPA, but the other beers - Bolt117, Waddaquoddoc Wheat, Heron Aleand Belgian Pale Ale - were middle-of-

the-road.However, the chardonnay cousin John

also brought was very good, especially ifyou like the fruit-centered, unoaked typeof chardonnay they make in the Chablisregion of France.

ix years ago, when Lisa Gil-bert and her husband beganbuilding their shingle-stylehome on the Falmouth Fore-side, she knew exactly howher kitchen needed to lookand function.

"I wanted it to be warm witha kind of country feel," saidGilbert. "And we have four

kids, so it had to be durable."With a generous green-gray granite

island, abundant mahogany counter spaceand a six-burner, two-oven Thermadorrange, the kitchen also had to serve theneeds of an avid cook.

"It had to really work, because I cook alot," said Gilbert, whose husband, Brad,is a home builder who owns Tall TreesConstruction. The couple's experiencebuilding and renovating homes helpedguide many of their choices in the kitchenand throughout the comfortable house.

Members of the public can view theirkitchen Friday and Saturday during theFalmouth Kitchen Tour.

Organized by Marcy Boyton of A DivineTime and Lana Wescott of Lana WescottEvents, the kitchen tour enters its secondyear this weekend after raising $5,000 lastyear for hunger relief.

L acey Castro is a champion, albeit avery specialized kind of champion.

Castro, 30, was co-winner of the 2009North American Wife Carrying Champion-ship.

As the wife, it was Castro's job to keepa firm grasp on her husband, Dave, whilehe ran a 278-yard obstacle course up hills,across logs, through mud and sand, andinto water.

While her husband ran, the 97-poundCastro was on his back, with her head

down by his waistand her legs over hisshoulders. (The posi-tion in wife-carryingparlance is known asthe Estonian, by theway.)

down by one's husband while water andmud and ground and rocks are whizzingby one's head in a blur?

"My only advice is, no matter what hap-pens, hold on," said Castro, of Alfred. "Italways goes by faster than I think it will."

Castro had so much fun, she's ready tobe carried upside down again. She andher husband will be one of the 52 couplescompeting Saturday in the 2012 NorthAmerican Wife Carrying Championship atthe Sunday River ski area.

The event is part of Sunday River's fallfestival, and is free to spectators. Thecompetitive field is full for this year, but ifyou want to try your hand at wife carrying,check it out this year as a spectator andsign up for next year.

The couples run in heats, with winningtimes usually less than a minute. The win-ning couple gets the wife's weight in beerand five times her weight in cash. For theCastros, that turned out to be six cases ofBud Light and a little under $500.

The wife carrying championships havebeen a huge crowd favorite at SundayRiver for the past decade or so. The eventbegan after somebody pointed out to thefolks at Sunday River that there was sucha thing as wife carrying contests, and thatthe world championships are held yearlyin Finland, where the sport originated.

Wife carrying in Finnish folklore istraced to a 19th-century character,Rankainen the Robber, who is said to havetested out his henchmen's strength andendurance by making them run a coursewith a heavy sack on their backs. Throw inthe fact that this robber band supposedlystole women from neighboring villages,and you've got the basis for modern wifecarrying.

And although the word "wife" is used,it's not a technical requirement. Couplescompeting can be unmarried. Heck, theydon't even have to date. They just have towork well together when one is runningand the other is hanging upside down.

And, according to the official rules, the

woman can carry the man, if that seemsto be the best arrangement.

In the Castros' case, it wouldn't be.Lacey is about 5 feet tall and weighs 97pounds. Dave is about 5-feet-10, but is aUPS driver. Which means he's in goodphysical shape and is used to a lot of run-ning.

"He's just a really competitive persontoo," said Castro. "So when we heardabout this, we thought it was somethingwe'd like to try."

The Castros have also tried variousracing positions - piggyback and thefireman's carry, for instance. But the Es-tonian (no one's quite sure why it's calledthat) seems to work best. In fact, the folksat Sunday River said every couple whohas won the championship has used theEstonian.

"For us, there's something about theweight distribution that works best," saidCastro.

After winning the North Americantitle, Castro and her husband traveled toFinland to compete in the world champi-onship. But since the Fins invented thesport, you'd figure they'd be good at it.

And you'd be right. The Castros came infifth.

"We were very disappointed," saidCastro.

But on Saturday, she will be racing atSunday River with her husband, back onfamiliar ground.

She just hopes that the ground doesn'thit her in the head.

“Saltimbanco” is Cirque du Soleil’s longest-running touring show, and the one the company likes to use to introduce itself to new markets. It’s the company’s calling card, and the show around which the company has built its reputation for the past 20 years.

“We’re known all around the world, except in Maine,” Vadivel said. “We’ve opened up more than 150 new markets with this show. It is the show for us that has opened the door for all the other shows to come afterward.”

Saltimbanco literally means “to jump on a bench.” It explores life in the city – the people who live there, the energy of the street and the allure of tall buildings.

The show does not tell a story per se, Vadivel said, but instead weaves a tale built on allegory and physicality. It feels baroque, dreamlike and fanciful.

“Saltimbanco” lasts about 21⁄2 hours and is divided into three primary acts, includ-ing Chinese poles, the Russian swing, and bungee and trapeze aerials. Along with those three acts, the show includes many more small vignettes that occur through-out the evening.

There is plenty of audience interaction, and the cast has room to improvise.

“At any given time, there may be two performers on stage or up to 40 or 50. There is a lot of layering and texturing with our shows,” Vadivel said. “There is always something going on, little quiet moments and bold acts of theatricality.”

The set is huge. It will encompass about half of the civic center, leaving each show with a seating capacity of 3,200. The civic center is one of the smallest venues in which Cirque du Soleil has performed in quite some time, Vadivel said.

As artistic director, it is Vadivel’s job to safeguard the spirit and vision of the show, despite the infusion of new perform-ers. Each performer brings a different set of skills, and Cirque du Soleil likes to allow each to express himself or herself. But it’s important that the structure of the show remains intact, Vadivel said.

Cirque du Soleil jobs are not easy to land. The company employs around 5,000 people, of whom about 1,400 are perform-ing artists. It has about two dozen shows that tour around the world.

Vadivel joined the company as a dancer. She grew up in Montreal, and was aware of Cirque du Soleil from a young age.

She received her training in contem-porary dance, and applied for a job with Cirque du Soleil. She waited three years for her call, and spent more than two years touring with the production “Dral-ion.”

“I enjoyed the touring, and I was proud to be a part of the show,” she said. “It was fun performing for 3,000 people every night.”

"It's a fun way to show real, working kitchens," Boyton said.

The kitchens were selected for the tour because of their pedigrees of being created by the state's top designers and cabinet­makers and featuring the latest appliances, lighting fixtures and materials.

The Gilbert kitchen was designed by Deb Kingry of Simply Home. Kingry said she used touches such as antique white cabinetry from New World Kitchens with blue buffalo plaid curtains behind the glass fronts and a brick backsplash surrounding the range to give the kitchen an inviting, homey feel.

But she wouldn't call it a country kitchen. "It feels really contemporary and fresh

and sophisticated," Kingry said. "This house feels very cozy. I think it's going to be a fan favorite. This is how everyone wants to live."

Gilbert said the kitchen's real charm is its functionality. The sun-drenched breakfast room, enclosed by huge windows over­looking the pool and topped by a coffered ceiling, is an integral and well-used part of the kitchen space.

"The kitchen originated with that nook," Gilbert said.

She's surprised by how well the mahoga­ny countertops have held up, and continues to appreciate the cook-friendly features of the range.

"Especially during the holidays, you can have a roasting pan on the burners to make gravy and other things going at the same time," Gilbert said. "It comes in handy to have the six burners."

The two ovens means she can roast a tur­key - 26 pounds is the largest she's cooked in the bigger of the two ovens - while cas­seroles and pies cook in the other oven.

In addition to the homes on the tour, well-known Maine food historian and author Sandy Oliver will deliver a talk at 9 a.m. Saturday titled "17 Things You Need to Know About Maine Food." This talk takes place at the Falmouth Country Club, and tickets can be purchased separately for $10.

Boyton said it takes about three hours to visit all the homes on the tour. Ticket-hold­ers can opt to do it all in one day or split their visits over the two days.
