Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful
and kindle in them the fire of your love.
Ven, Espíritu Santo, llena los corazones de tus fieles y enciende en ellos el fuego de tu amor.
Today we encounter the Holy Spirit who at Pentecost came
rushing in over Jesus’ followers like a powerful wind. It must have
been a frightening experience for them. But their great acts of
prophetic witness began when the Spirit drew them out of their
“comfort zones.” Jesus said the Holy Spirit, like the wind, blows
where it wills; into the lives of good stewards, empowering them to
perform acts of healing, reconciliation and evangelization.

Question of the Week
Pentecost Sunday —John 20:19-23
Key Passage: Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them and whose sins you retain are retained.”
Question for adults: What natural gifts have you been given through which the Holy Spirit can work?
Question for children: What are you good at and how do you use that for Jesus?

We lift up to the Lord in
prayer all those who seek heal-
ing through the peace of Christ,
especially Cecilia Savage, Con-
nie Knowles and Homer Poor.
We pray too, for those who
struggle with grief or addictions
and those who labor to provide
our well being and freedom espe-

tary, and for those separated from
their loved ones and family. For
each of them, may the promise and gift of the peace of Chr ist fill their

(CNS) Pope The Vatican is funding a job-creation program for Iraqi refu-gees in Jordan, a country that is host-ing close to 1.5 million refugees, but is struggling to provide work for them. With $150,000 donated to the Vat-ican by visitors to its pavilion at the World’s Fair in Milan in 2015, the Vatican will provide the funding that Caritas Jordan needs to launch the project.
Fifteen Iraqi refugees will have full-time work cultivating, producing and selling vegetables and oil, said a communique May 10 from the Pontifi-cal Council Cor Unum, the Vatican office which promotes and distributes Catholic charity. The jobs will allow them to provide for their families and become self-supporting, the office said. Another 200 Iraqi refugees will be given training in carpentry, agriculture and the food industry, Cor Unum said, and an additional 500 will be given
seasonal employment. Jordan currently is hosting about 130,000 Iraqi refugees, Cor Unum said; many of the refugees fled their homes in Iraq after the 2003 U.S.-led invasion of their country and the cap-ture of Saddam Hussein. Jordan also is hosting more than 1.3 million Syrian refugees, making it even more diffi-cult for any refugee to find work. Many refugees look for work and of-ten accept jobs without contracts, said Wael Suleiman, director of Caritas Jordan. "But the market does not offer many opportunities." The project, which will be based at Caritas' Our Lady of Peace Center in Amman, was to be inaugurated May 12. After the initial funding by the Vatican, it was hoped the products produced would earn enough for both the workers' salaries and future project costs.
Admiration for Pope Francis in decline, study shows… (Crux) Three years into his papacy, a recent study shows global admiration for Pope Francis is in decline. The pontiff fell seven spots in 2016, from sixth down to 13th among the world’s men, the biggest drop for anyone on last year’s list, and is now no longer either the planet’s most ad-mired spiritual leader (the Dali Lama) or even the most admired Argentine

Theologians’ brief in HHS man-date case might lead to compro-mise ruling... (CNS) Supreme Cour t cases, with their multiple friend-of-the-court briefs, leave extensive paper trails behind them and although these briefs might get lost in the shuffle, occasion-ally some stand out. In Zubik v. Burwell, the challenge to the Affordable Care Act’s contra-ception requirement, more than 30 briefs were filed by religious, political and health groups weighing in both for and against the mandate that most religious and other employers must cover contraceptives, sterilization and abortifacients through employer-provided health insurance even if they are morally opposed to such coverage. One of these briefs, submitted by a group of 50 Catholic theologians and ethicists, may have been instrumental in prompting the court to issue its March 29 order for new written argu-ments by both sides.
Trump v. Clinton has Catholic leaders scrambling... (Crux) With the general election matchup coming into focus, some Catholic leaders in the U.S. find them-selves scrambling to figure out what to make of a race between one candi-date whose views on immigration clash with decades of Catholic pro-immigration work, and another who supports same-sex marriage and ex-panded access to abortion and contra-ception. Republicans have relied on con-servative Catholics for decades, yet some say they aren’t on board now.
