Anuradhapura One of the cities, now a UNESCO

World Heritage Site, was the center

of Theravada Buddhism for many

centuries. The city lies 205 km north

of the current capital Colombo in Sri

Lanka's North Central Province, on the

banks of the historic Malvathu Oya. It

is one of the oldest continuously

inhabited cities in the world and one of

the eight World Heritage Sites of Sri

Lanka.

It is believed that from the 4th

century BC, it was the capital of

the Sinhalese until the beginning of

the 11th century AD. During this

period it remained one of the most

stable and durable centers of political

power and urban life in South Asia.

The ancient city, considered sacred to

the Buddhist world, is today

surrounded by monasteries covering an

area of over sixteen square miles

(40 km²).

Page 8: Goc intern booklet

Plolonnaruwa

The second most ancient of

Sri Lanka's kingdoms,

Polonnaruwa was first

declared the capital city by

King Vijayabahu I, who

defeated the Chola invaders in

1070 to reunite the country

once more under a local

leader. Today the ancient city

of Polonnaruwa remains one of

the best planned

archaeological relic sites in

the country, standing

testimony to the discipline and

greatness of the Kingdom's

first rulers. Its beauty was

also used as a backdrop to

filmed scenes for the Duran

Duran music video Save a

Prayer in 1982. The ancient

city of Polonnaruwa has been

declared a World Heritage

site by UNESCO.

Adam's Peak (also Sri

Pada; Sinhalese

Samanalakanda - සමනළ

කන්ද "butterfly mountain",

and also ශ්‍රී දයද" "Sri

Paadaya" is a 2,243 m

(7,359 ft) tall conical

mountain located in central

Sri Lanka. It is well known

for the Sri Pada, i.e.,

"sacred footprint", a 1.8 m

(5 ft 11 in) rock formation

near the summit, which in

Buddhist tradition is held

to be the footprint of the

Buddha, in Hindu tradition

that of Shiva and in

Islamic and Christian

tradition that of Adam, or

that of St. Thomas.

Kandy Kandy is a major city in Sri Lanka,

located in the Central Province, Sri

Lanka. It is the second largest city

in the country after Colombo. It

was the last capital of the ancient

kings' era of Sri Lanka. The city

lies in the midst of hills in the

Kandy plateau, which crosses an

area of tropical plantations, mainly

tea. Kandy is both an

administrative and religious city

and is also the capital of the

Central Province. Kandy is the home

of The Temple of the Tooth Relic

(Sri Dalada Maligawa), one of the

most sacred places of worship in

the Buddhist world. It was

declared a world heritage site by

UNESCO in 1988.

Sinharaja Forest

Sinharaja Forest reserve is a

National park and a

biodiversity hotspot in Sri

Lanka. It is of international

significance and has been

designated a Biosphere

Reserve and a World

Heritage Site by UNESCO.

The reserve’s name translates

as Kingdom of the Lion, The

reserve is only 89sq. km in

area but it is a treasure trove

of endemic species, including

trees, insects, amphibians,

reptiles, birds and mammals.

The most common larger

mammal is the purple faced

Langur.

South Coast Our southern coastal belt

has many pockets of

absolutely gorgeous flat and

wide sandy beaches. The

lagoons found in this area

make safe all-year round

swimming. Bentota has

possibly the best beach in

the entire south coast,

while Hikkaduwa is famed

for its corals and water-

based activities like diving

and snorkeling. The south

coast is affected by the

south-west monsoon from

May to September, so the

best time to enjoy the

south coast beaches are

from November to April.

Udawalawa National Park

This is a major eco tourism

destination in Sri Lanka, most

famous for the elephants

that live there (about 400 in

total). During a visit, it is not

unusual to see whole herds of

adults and young elephants–

feeding or bathing and playing

in the water! In addition to

this main attraction, the park

is home to many water

buffalo, water monitor

lizards, sambar deer, monkeys

and the occasional leopard, as

well as being an exciting

location for bird enthusiasts.

A 4WD open-top safari is the

only way to see all the

wonders that this protected

reserve has to offer and our

experienced and

knowledgeable nature guides

will make this an

unforgettable experience

SRI LANKAN CUISINE & FOOD

Sri Lankan cuisine is one of the most

complex cuisines of South Asia. Due to

its proximity to South India, the cuisine

of Sri Lanka shows some influence, yet

is in many ways quite distinct. As a

major trade hub, it draws influence

from colonial powers that were

involved in Sri Lanka and by foreign

traders. Rice, which is consumed daily,

can be found at any occasion, while

spicy curries are favorite dishes for

lunch and dinner. Generally, breakfast

costs less than 1.5 USD, lunch around

2 USD and dinner about 2USD. Most of

the curries are made with chili,

turmeric, cinnamon, cardamom and

rampe. When ordering foods, be aware

about the spiciness of them. Indian

and western restaurants like

McDonalds and KFC are also available

in urban areas
