GOD CHOSE US Who chose first, God or you? That is the question explored in today’s three readings. The second reading, from Paul’s Let-
ter to the Ephe-sians, reads almost like a hymn. It praises God for choosing us, for calling us to serve, and for blessing us in our service. Paul makes it clear how honored we are and how special is the call to live as children of God. This is through no doing of our own. The first reading and the Gospel use

Carmelites Who Have Made a Difference There are approximately 36 Saints who are called “Doctors of the Church.” These 32 men and 4 women whose lives and writings have been determined to be of extraordinary value especially in the area of faith and spirituality. Three of these saints are Carmelites: Teresa of Avila, John of the Cross, and Thérèse of Li-sieux all of whom are considered to be giants in the Carmelite Order.
Teresa of Avila was most known for her understanding of “self-knowledge”, God is in the pots and pans, and encountering the God of absolute love in our own being. She taught her young sisters that the more you know yourself, the more you know God. And the more you spend time with God, especial-ly in silent contemplation, the more you know yourself. Hence, self-knowledge and continual inte-rior growth, lead one to holiness.
St. John of the Cross was known for finding a loving God in the midst of pain, suffering, and darkness. It was in his weakness that he felt the closest to God. Through intimate union with God, he was able to change his darkness into spiritual brilliance. John also found contemplation and silence restful places for his soul. John of the Cross mastered the spiritual and life stance of “letting go.” For John, letting go of his own indignation, letting go of his pride, letting go of any desire for retribution, for recogni-tion, and for status, was the tip of many other things that John had to dispose of in his life. These externals were obstacles that kept him away from union with God. Finally, the French Little Flower of Carmel, St. Thérèse of Lisieux joined the Carmelite convent at the age of 15. She prayed, swept floors, did laundry and gardening, she washed dishes, and recruited, too. She found Carmel to be a place where she could be most faithful to God. That is what mattered the most. Her special contribution to spiritu-ality is commonly known as the “Little Way.” Essentially, follow-ing through on what you are called to do all the time. If you’re called to prayer, pray like you’ve never prayed before. If you’re
asked to write an autobiography, then you narrate like you’ve never narrated before. Follow your heart like you’ve never followed it before. Her narrated story is called The Story of a Soul. There are many other Carmelite saints worth reading about. May I sug-gest that you take a look at two partic-ular saints: St. Edith Stein and Bl. Titus Brandsma.

espiritual y vital de “soltar.” Para Juan, dejar ir su propia indignación, dejar ir su orgullo, dejar ir cualquier deseo de retribución, reconocimiento y estatus, fue la punta de mu-chas otras cosas de las que Juan tuvo que deshacerse en su vida. Estos externos fueron obstáculos que lo alejaron de la unión con Dios. Finalmente, la Pequeña Flor del Carmelo francesa, Santa Teresa de Lisieux se unió al convento Carmelita a la edad de 15 años. The Sacrament of Confirmation Those who have been baptized continue on the path of Christian initiation through the sacrament of confir-mation. In this sacrament they receive the Holy Spirit. This giving of the Holy Spirit conforms believers more fully to Christ and strengthens them so that they may bear witness to Christ. Guidelines: • The candidates must have attained high school. • Must be participating in a program of systematic catech-
esis either in the parish or a Catholic school. • Must have a basic understanding of the Bible, the Creed,
the sacraments, the Christian life and prayer. • Participate in the sacrament life of the Church, especially
Eucharistic liturgies. Confirmation I Youth: A large part of our vocation as Catholic Christians is to be of service to those that have less. Candidates will experience service in three areas; Family, Church and the wider Community. While social dis-tancing has restricted the opportunity to serve the Church and the community, there is great opportunity to serve the family. Be creative. Faith Formation Formación en la Fe Religious Education
Registration for the 2021–22 Catechetical year will be in the month of August. Parents may register their child/ren for sacrament preparation at that time. Cat-echesis for Reconciliation and First Communion is offered to children of eight years of age and older. Preparation is a two consecutive year process. Ways to Obtain Plenary Indulgences
in the Year of St. Joseph
According to the decree issued by the Apostolic Peni-tentiary on December 8, there are 15 ways to receive an indulgence in the Year of St. Joseph. Some of the opportunities have already passed. However, all of these are still available:
1. Participate in a spiritual retreat for at least one day that includes a meditation on St. Joseph.
2. Pray for St. Joseph’s intercession for the unem-ployed that they might find dignifying work.
3. Recite the Litany of St. Joseph for persecuted Christians. Byzantine Catholics have the option of an Akathist to St. Joseph.
4. Entrust one’s daily work and activity to the protection of St. Joseph the Worker.
5. Follow St. Joseph’s example in performing a corporal work of mercy. These include feeding the hungry, giving drink to the thirsty, clothing the naked, sheltering the homeless, visiting the imprisoned, visiting the sick, and burying the dead.
6. Perform one of the spiritual works of mercy, such as comforting the sorrowful, counseling the doubtful, in-structing the ignorant, admonishing the sinner, bearing wrongs patiently, forgiving injuries, and praying for the living and the dead.
7. Pray the rosary together with one’s family in order that “all Christian families may be stimulated to recreate the same atmosphere of intimate communion, love and pray-er that was in the Holy Family.”
8. Engaged couples can also receive an indulgence from praying the rosary together.
9. Meditate for at least 30 minutes on the Lord’s Prayer, because St. Joseph “invites us to rediscover our filial rela-tionship with the Father, to renew fidelity to prayer, to listen and correspond with profound discernment to God’s will.”
10. Pray an approved prayer to St. Joseph on the 19th of any month.
11. Honor Joseph with an act of piety or approved prayer on any Wednesday, the day traditionally dedicated to St. Joseph.
The elderly, the sick, and the dying who are unable to leave their homes due to the coronavirus pandemic also have special permission to receive an indulgence by “offering with trust in God the pains and discomforts” of their lives with a prayer to St. Joseph, hope of the sick and patron of a happy death.
