Page 3: God Created the Sabbath for You and Me

When Does the Sabbath Start We should first identify which day of the week is the Sabbath Day

In Exodus 20:11 It tells us that the Sabbath Day is on the seventh day of the week. We know that day to be Saturday

Therefore, Saturday is the Sabbath Day

You can use your calendar to help you

God Created the Sabbath Day Did you know God made the Sabbath Day for us to keep?

Did you know he also kept the Sabbath Day?

Did you know that it all started right after he created the earth?

Well, let’s first talk about how God himself stopped all of his great work so that he would keep the Sabbath Day.

God Created the Sabbath Day Did you know God made the Sabbath Day for us to keep?

God Created the Sabbath Day Genesis 2:2-3 tells us: “And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made. And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.”

So, there is proof that God also kept the Sabbath Day right at the beginning of time. Now he wants us to do the same.

Page 7: God Created the Sabbath for You and Me

God Created the Sabbath Day So, after reading that scripture, you can see that God created the Sabbath Day during the time of creation. He called the seventh day, the Sabbath, and he rested and sanctified it.

If you’re ever asked or ever wondered when and how the Sabbath come about. You can safely say that the Sabbath Day was created on the seventh Day of the week! It came about during the creation of this earth!

Christ Kept the Sabbath God didn’t only give us the commandment of keeping the Sabbath Day but he kept the Sabbath Day as well

We learned that God kept in the beginning of time, now let’s see what Christ did when he walked the earth

Remember, there are different names for God, so when it tells us that Christ the Sabbath we’re still talking about the same person (take a look at the presentation “Holy I AM & Holy Are My Names”

Christ Kept the Sabbath During the time Christ walked this earth, he chose several men to be his disciples. Those men agreed to be his disciples (disciples mean followers) and they helped him teach the word of God to everyone.

The disciples were even learning themselves.

On every Sabbath Day, Christ always entered the synagogue.

Let’s take a look at Mark 1:21

It says, “And they went into Capernaum; and straightway on the sabbath day he entered into the synagogue, and taught.”

Christ Kept the Sabbath

Luke 4: 16 “And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read.”

The Disciples Kept the Sabbath If Christ kept the Sabbath Day, it’s probably safe to say that his disciples kept the Sabbath Day too. The bible gives us a lot of examples of the disciples keeping the Sabbath Day, especially in the book of Acts. Let’s see.

Acts 17:1 tells us that Paul went into the synagogue on the Sabbath Day, as he always did. This time he went into the same synagogue three sabbath days in a row!

The Disciples Kept the Sabbath

Another example is found in Acts 13:14 says, “But when they departed from Perga, they came to Antioch in Piidia, and went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and sat down.”

So, there are several good examples of the disciples, especially Paul keeping the Sabbath Day!

How We Must Keep the Sabbath

Now, let’s talk about how we should keep the Sabbath Day.

There are things we can do on the Sabbath and there are things we can not do on the Sabbath.

Page 14: God Created the Sabbath for You and Me

How We Must Keep the Sabbath First, we must the remember the Sabbath from sun down to sun down.

We learn in the book of Genesis, that a new day actually begins when the sun sets. Take a look at Genesis chapter 1. It tells us over and over that the evening and the morning were the first day, and then again for the second day, and so and so on.

So we know that a new day actually begins in the evening time.

Page 15: God Created the Sabbath for You and Me

How We Must Keep the Sabbath We know that the 6th day of the week is Friday.

And we know that the 7th day of the week is Saturday (the very next day).

So what we must do is beginning Friday when the sun goes down put away all common things, because that is the start of the Sabbath Day

Page 16: God Created the Sabbath for You and Me

How We Must Keep the Sabbath Let’s now discuss some things we can do on the Sabbath

First the Sabbath day is a day of rest.

We should bring an end to all of things we do throughout the week and come to a rest on the Sabbath.

When we rest, we are resting from the common things we do that are perfectly fine to do on the other six days.

When we rest, we are also worshiping God on his Sabbath Day.

Page 17: God Created the Sabbath for You and Me

How We Must Keep the Sabbath Leviticus 23:3 “Six days shall work be done, but on the seventh day of rest, an holy convocation; ye shall do no work therein: it is the sabbath of the LORD in all your dwellings.”

Exodus 20:8-11 “Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy…”(you may keep reading these scriptures in your bible).

Page 18: God Created the Sabbath for You and Me

Let’s Review What We KnowSo, what do know about how to the keep the Sabbath Day?

We know that no work should be done

It is a day of rest

It must be kept as a holy day

It begins at sundown the day before (Friday)

Things We Can Do on the Sabbath

The Sabbath Day is a holy day right?

There are things we can do that are holy.

There are also things that we shouldn’t do because they are not holy. They may not be sinful things, but they are not holy things either. So we DO NOT engage in those activities on the Sabbath.

In Conclusion Can you think of anything else that can and can’t be done on the Sabbath Day?

If so, remember the Sabbath Day is a Holy Day. Christ kept the Sabbath and so should you.

It tells us that the Sabbath was created for man (meaning you and I) and not man for the Sabbath. That can be found in Mark 2: 27

It also tells us that the “Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath” (Mark 2:28).
