LEADER BIBLE STUDY Notice that God made an immeasurable leap in His value of humans relative to the rest
of creation. He created mankind, both male and female, in His image (Genesis 1:27).
This means that humans have characteristics like God Himself. We can communicate in
complex languages and can make moral choices. Most importantly, we have a spiritual
nature and can have a personal relationship with God.
Genesis 2 provides details of God’s creation of man, called Adam in chapter 3. God
made the man from the dust of the earth. Unlike the animals created earlier, God
breathed life into the man! God placed him in a beautiful garden. He told the man to
name the animals. No creature, however, was adequate as a companion for the man, so
God put him to sleep and formed a woman from his rib.
The biblical definition of marriage was established with Adam and Eve. Even
though Adam and Eve sinned and suffered the consequences of their sin against God
(Genesis 3), they began a family. Soon their family, like most others since, began to
experience problems.
Adam and Eve had two sons, Cain and Abel. The younger, Abel, became a shepherd,
and Cain became a farmer. At some point in time, Cain made an offering of some of
his crops to God. Abel also made an offering of some of the firstborn of his flock. For
a reason that is not explained, God accepted Abel’s offering but rejected Cain’s. The
rejection angered Cain. God saw that Cain was angry and tried to warn him of the
dangers of unchecked sin. Unfortunately, the situation got much worse (Genesis 4:8-9).
What does it mean that humans are stewards of God’s earth?

Why do children of the same parents often take different paths in life?

What do we as believers in Christ have, unlike Cain, to help us control our emotions

BIBLE STORY
GOD MADE PEOPLE AND FAMILIESGod had made a wonderful world! But God knew the world needed people. God
said, “People will be more important than the birds, fish, and animals.”
First, God made a man. God had made a beautiful garden where the man could
live. God told the man to take care of the trees and plants in the garden. The man
gave names to all the animals God had made.
God did not want to the man to be alone. So God made a woman to be his
special helper.
God saw all that He had made was good. On the seventh day, God rested.
Adam and Eve had two sons, Cain and Abel. Cain was a farmer. He worked hard
to grow food for his family to eat. Abel cared for the family’s sheep. Adam, Eve,
Cain, and Abel were the first family.

INTRODUCTORY ACTIVITY ►Cheers for Family Week 1 __ Week 2 __
Prior to the session, make a list of each child’s immediate family members. If uncertain
about names, ask caregivers upon each child’s arrival. Once kids settle into the room,
read aloud the list in random order. Prompt kids to clap and cheer when they hear the
name of one of their family members. Guide nonverbal children to look at you when
hearing a familiar name. Say: “God made you and your family. You are His creation.”
►Name the Animals Week 1 __ Week 2 __
Review by reminding children that made the animals. Show the Teaching Picture
and point to Adam. Mention that God made Adam. Say: “Adam gave names to all the
animals.” Invite a child to draw an animal picture card. Identify the animal. Continue
until each child has had a turn to draw a card and name the animal.
* Challenge: Show a child an animal card. Offer the child two magnetic alphabet
letters. Lead the child to choose which letter indicates the first letter of the animal’s
name. Place both the card and the letter on the baking sheet.
STUDY THE BIBLE ►Video Week 1 __ Week 2 __
Use the “God Made People: Life Action” and “The First Family: Life Action” videos to
introduce the Bible story or to review it at the end of the session.
►The First Family Week 1 __ Week 2 __
Open your Bible to Genesis 1. Tell the children to listen closely as you tell them the
names of the people God made to be the first family. Invite three boys and one girl
to stand in front of the group. At the appropriate time as you tell the story, give each
child a name card to hold. For review, make a statement about each person in the
first family. Lead kids to point to or say the name of the first family member you are
describing.
• God made this man first. He have names to all the animals. (Adam)
• God made this woman to be Adam’s helper. (Eve)
• This son of Adam and Eve was a farmer. (Cain)
• This son of Adam and Eve took care of the family’s sheep. (Abel)
Lead children in prayer. Thank God for the first family, and for each child’s family.

►Streamer Garden Week 1 __ Week 2 __
Place a rolled piece of tape on the back of each leaf. Lead children to talk about what
they might see in a garden. Distribute the leaves. Invite kids to stick the leaves to
the streamers to create the look of a garden. Read aloud the words on the leaves.
Encourage children to listen for these words in today’s Bible story. Open the Bible to
Genesis 1. Tell the story and show the Teaching Picture. For review, ask each question,
encouraging kids to answer by saying or pointing to a word on a leaf. As needed,
identify two words from which kids may choose to answer each question.
• Who made the world? (God)
• What was still needed in the world? (people)
• What type of person did God make first? (man)
• What was the man’s name? (Adam)
• Where did Adam live? (garden)
• What type of person did God make to be Adam’s helper? (woman)
• What was the woman’s name? (Eve)
• What were the names of Adam and Eve’s two sons? (Cain, Abel)
►The First Family Week 1 __ Week 2 __
Display the family picture pattern blocks. Help children group the blocks into sets, one
set each for mothers, fathers, boys, and girls. Invite a child to select a father and place
the block on the table near you. Do the same for a mother and two boys. Invite kids to
listen to the Bible story to find out what you will tell them about a father, mother, and
two sons. Tell the Bible story, touching each block as you refer to Adam, Eve, Cain, and
Abel. To review, distribute the Kids Activity Page. Guide children to look at the picture
of God’s most important creation, people. Suggest children touch the small picture of
Adam, then touch Adam in the larger picture. Repeat the process to identify and touch
Eve, Cain, and Abel. Say: “God made people different from the other things He made.
He made people to be the most important part of His creation. Adam, Eve, Cain, and
Abel were the first family.”
►Creation Picture Time Line
Point out the time line on the wall. Tell kids you will add one final picture to the time
line after you tell the Bible story. Lead kids to find Genesis 1, then flip to chapters 2
and 4. Tell the story in your own words as everyone holds their Bibles open. For review,
give a quick summary of the pictures that are already on the time line. Invite a child to
add the final picture to the time line. Say: “God made people!”

PRACTICE BIBLE SKILLS ►Cup Tower Week 1 __ Week 2 __
Challenge children to build a cup tower while learning the Weekly Verse,
Deuteronomy 5:16. Place a cup right side up and say “Love,” the first word of the verse.
Turn the next cup upside down, place it on the base cup, and say “Love your,” the first
two words of the verse. Continue to stack the cups in the same pattern while adding
a word to the verse. When stacking the sixth cup, add the Scripture reference. If the
cup tower falls, start over with the beginning of the verse. Explain that children can
love their parents or caregivers by obeying them, listening to what they say, showing
respect, being helpful, and saying kind words to them. Show children how to find
Deuteronomy 5:16 in the Bible.
* Challenge: Lead children to count how many books of the Bible come before
Deuteronomy.
►Surprise Snack Week 1 __ Week 2 __
Fill each paper bag with a fruit snack, sheet of stickers, and a note card with the word
Genesis printed on it. Surprise each child with a sack to open. Guide children to remove
the items from their bags. Invite them to talk about the stickers and how they represent
what God made. Encourage them to decorate their sacks with the stickers. Let children
eat their fruit snacks and try to read the word on the note card. Help children find
Genesis in the Bible. Mention that Genesis is the first book in the Bible. Say: “Today’s
Bible story about the first family God made is in the Book of Genesis.” Guide kids to put
the note card anywhere in the Book of Genesis.
►Sheep Leap Week 1 __ Week 2 __
Ask: “Which son of Adam and Eve cared for the family’s sheep?” (Abel) Invite each child
to touch and hold a cotton ball. Ask kids to tell you how the cotton ball feels. Explain
that it feels soft, sort of like sheep’s wool. Mention that God made sheep. Sheep can
jump and leap. Play a giggle game. Toss a cotton ball into the air to pretend it is a sheep
jumping and leaping. When the ball is in the air, kids may giggle. When it hits the
ground, kids should stop laughing and say aloud Genesis 1:1: “In the beginning God
made the world.” Continue to play until children can easily say the verse. Show children
how to find the verse in the Bible.
›Six plastic cups
›CD: “Allergy Alert”
›Lunch size paper bags; individually-wrapped packages of fruit snacks; note cards; marker; stickers of people, animals, or flowers
›Post the allergy alert.

LIVE IT OUT ►Color Wheel Bracelet Week 1 __ Week 2 __
Remind children that God made them to be unique, with their own set of likes and
dislikes. Review the names of the first family. (Adam, Eve, Cain, and Abel) Mention that
Cain and Abel were brothers who had different interests. Cain was a farmer, and Abel
was a shepherd. Ask: “How are your family members different from one another?”
Guide children to make a bracelet with beads representing each family member’s
favorite color. If a child does not know his family members’ favorite colors, he may
simply add a different color bead for each family member. Children who struggle with
fine mother skills may need assistance adding the beads to the lacing. When each
child finishes, trim the lacing to fit the child’s wrist, and tie the ends together. Suggest
as a child wears the bracelet he may remember to be kind and loving to his family
members.
►Family Checklist Week 1 __ Week 2 __
Distribute the Kids Activity Page. Lead kids to share what they think is happening in
each picture. As each picture is discussed, guide each child to put a check mark in the
box if the picture shows something his family likes to do. Allow time for children to tell
the group about fun family experiences as the pictures trigger memories. Say: “God
made families. Jesus had a family, and you have a family. God wants families to enjoy
being together.” Lead in prayer, thanking God for families.
CLOSING ACTIVITY
►Take Care of the Room Week 1 __ Week 2 __
Play “God Made You and Me” (track 1) as children assist in cleaning the room. Mention
that Adam and Eve took care of the garden God made.
►Who Made It? Week 1 __ Week 2 __
Ask each child as she leaves the room: “Who made people and families?” (God)

BONUS ACTIVITIES
God Made People Week 1__ Week 2 __Demonstrate tapping knees twice and clapping hands twice. Keep tapping and
clapping as children join you. When children are able to keep a steady rhythm, softly
repeat: “God made peo-ple. God made peo-ple. God made me, and my name is ___.”
Point to or nod to each child when it is his turn to say his name. When you pray, thank
God for making people.
Stick Figures Week 1__ Week 2 __Say: “Last week, we learned God made the world in six days. He made the sun, moon,
stars, plants, trees, animals, and fish.” Tell children you will invite them to draw a picture
of God’s most important creation. Draw four stick figures on the board and instruct
kids to draw four similar figures on their paper. Assist so that each child completes this
step. Together, count the number of figures in the drawings. Lead kids to say the names
of the members of the first family. (Adam, Eve, Cain, Abel) Say: “People are God’s most
important creation. God made four people to be in the first family.” As time allows,
invite each child to say the names of the people in her family.
Waffle Snack Week 1__ Week 2 __Lead kids to wash their hands prior to handling food. Supervise well as children put
the waffles in the toaster slots. Use tongs to remove hot waffles. Invite kids to decorate
their waffles by using fruit to make facial expressions. Comment that God made people
and families. As children enjoy eating their waffles, lead kids to talk about people they
know who need prayer. Pray for the people children mention, and thank God for
the snack.
Smell Different Foods Week 1__ Week 2 __Encourage a child to smell one of the foods. Ask the child if he likes the smell or dislikes
the smell. Point to the smiley face and the frowny on the chart; direct the child to place
a sticker under the happy face if she likes the smell or under the sad face if she does not
like the smell. Then guide the child to smell the other foods and place a sticker on each
chart. As children smell the food, mention that God made our noses so we can smell.
He made people different than any other creature.
Challenge: Determine how many people liked and disliked each smell.
›No advance preparation needed.
›Dry erase board, dry erase marker, paper, crayons or pencils
›CD: “Allergy Alert”
›Toaster; frozen waffles; fruit (blueberries, raspberries, strawberries); tongs; paper plates; forks; napkins
›CD: “Allergy Alert,” “Like or Don’t Like Chart”
›Stickers; plates; foods with distinct smells (orange slices, chocolate bar, peeled banana, limburger cheese, rye bread)

Masking Tape Painting Week 1__ Week 2 __Suggest kids make a picture of anything connected with the Bible story. Verbally
recall words related to the story such as family, garden, trees, plants, and animals to
help children think of something they would like to make. Demonstrate how to tear
masking tape into different lengths and gently place them on the edge of the table.
Show children how to create a picture of their own design by taking a piece of tape and
attaching it to white paper. Give assistance as needed to complete this fine-motor task.
When each child has created a masking tape design, guide each child to paint over the
whole sheet of paper. Invite children to talk about their pictures, mentioning that God
made people and families. When the paint is dry on the paper, help children discard
and remove the tape.
Leaf Threading Week 1__ Week 2 __Cut a variety of different lengths of string and knot the end of each piece. Invite
children to choose some leaves, randomly punch holes in them, and thread string
through the holes. As children work, play “God Made a Beautiful World”
(track 2). Remind children that God made a beautiful garden for Adam and told him
to take care of the trees and plants. Adam also gave names to all the animals God
made. Lead children to say the names of other things God made. Thank God for all the
beautiful things in God’s creation.
Rest Week 1__ Week 2 __Invite each child to unroll a towel and place it on the floor. Play “God Made You and
Me” (track 1) as children sit or recline on their towels. Mention that after God made the
world in six days, He rested.
Missions Emphasis Week 1__ Week 2 __Review the missions story or show the video “Learning the Stories.” Comment that
mastering a new language is a huge task for any missionary working with people who
don’t speak English. Ask: “Why is it important for missionaries to learn a new language
quickly and correctly?” Tell children what each Songhai phrase means. Invite kids to
practice pronouncing the phrases by repeating each phonetic sound after you. Pray
that God will help missionaries learn the language of the people who live in West Africa
so they can tell them about Jesus.
Coloring Page Week 1__ Week 2 __Print the Coloring Pages. Review the Bible story as children color.

First, God made a man. God had made a beautiful garden where the man could live. God told the man to take care of the trees and plants in the garden. The man gave names to all the animals God had made.God did not want to the man to be alone. So God made a woman to be his special helper. God saw all that He had made was good. On the seventh day, God rested. Adam and Eve had two sons, Cain and Abel. Cain was a farmer. He worked hard to grow food for his family to eat. Abel cared for the family’s sheep. Adam, Eve, Cain, and Abel were the first family.

Missions in West Africa
Missionary: Kimberly Cain
Jesus loves all children everywhere and wants them
to learn about Him. Kimberly Cain in West Africa loves
children and tells them about Jesus.
Sometimes Kimberly teaches children as they sit on mats
on the dusty ground. Sometimes she teaches children
at a local church where the roof is made of woven grass.
That church building might not look like yours, but the
children in West Africa are learning the same stories from
the Bible that you are!
Kimberly uses a storytelling cloth to tell stories from the
Bible. Each picture on the cloth is about a different Bible
story. Kimberly tells children the Bible stories so they can
grow up knowing Jesus and telling others about Him.
Pray
• For missionaries to learn the new language
• For missionaries to adjust to a new culture and year-
round hot temperatures
• For the children of West Africa to learn to follow Jesus
and tell others
