This year we will purpose for our 2015 budget on Dec. 14. Beginning today, we will have a series of lessons to encourage and inspire us to be faithful stewards. Giving to God is not just an obligation, but it is equally a great opportunity! Start thinking and praying about your giving for 2015. The work of this congregation depends on “free will of- ferings” as we give to God each Lord’s Day. Our purpose allows our elders to plan the budget, which dictates the scope of our work. 1:00 Service Begins Next Sunday As we have announced recently, we are beginning a 1:00 service next Sunday, Dec. 7. The plan is to follow this schedule until the time changes in the Spring and then the elders will evaluate if we will continue to meet in the afternoon. In the mean- time, there will still be a 5:00 service in the Deaf Chapel for those unable to attend the morning or 1:00 service. With any expedient change that affects our meeting times, there will be a period of adjustment for all. However, the hope is that this change will positively affect the majority of our members from the youngest to the oldest. For those who decide to stay at the building or eat a quick lunch locally after the morning service, it will reduce travel expenses and time on the roads. The 1:00 service will allow those who attend to be home before dark. And families may also find they’ll be able to enjoy additional family time together on Sunday evenings. Still others may find they will have more time to spend in fellowship on Sunday afternoon between the services and/or on Sunday evenings. Perhaps other positive things could be said, but these are just a few of the possible benefits associated with an earlier ser- vice. Christian Ethics – Abortion # 5
As we mentioned in the last article some have used Exodus 21:22, 23 in an effort to justify abortion by claiming this verse teaches that the baby in the womb is not as impor-tant as the mother who carries that baby. The verse reads as follows, “And if men strive together, and hurt a woman
with child, so that her fruit depart, and yet no harm follow; he shall be surely fined, according as the woman's hus-band shall lay upon him; and he shall pay as the judges determine. 23 But if any harm follow, then thou shalt give life for life.” Pro-abortionists understand this verse as follows: “Fruit depart” – the child is aborted so that it dies! “No harm follows” – the mother is not injured. “Be surely fined” – the man responsible shall pay money as a punishment for the death of the child. “If any harm follow” – if the mother also is injured or dies. “Then thou shalt give life for life” – the man respon-sible for injury to the mother shall suffer the same injury, life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth. Such an interpretation makes it seem that the life of the mother is more important than the life of the child. If the child dies, the one responsible for the harm pays only a fine, but if the mother is injured he pays with the same physical injury inflicted upon him – life for life, eye for eye, and tooth for tooth. The better understanding of this passage would be much different. The expression “fruit depart” does not mean that the child is aborted so that it dies. Notice the translation in the New King James Version “If men fight, and hurt a woman with child, so that she gives birth prematurely, yet no harm follows, he shall surely be punished accordingly as the woman's husband imposes on him; and he shall pay as the judges deter-mine. 23 "But if any harm follows, then you shall give life for life.” The Hebrew word that is used is not the normal word for an abortion. That word would be shkl. It is used in Exodus 23:26 where God promises to His people if they are obedient to Him, that, “There shall none cast her young, nor be barren, in thy land: the number of thy days I will fulfill.” The word used in Exodus 21:22 is yts which is used often for child-birth. Notice how this word is used in Genesis 25:25 of the birth of Esau - “And the first came forth red, all over like a hairy garment. And they called his name Esau,” and in Genesis 38:28 of the birth of Tamar’s twin sons – “And so it was, when she was giving birth, that the one put out his hand; and the midwife took a scarlet thread and bound it on his hand, saying, "This one came out first.” Thus the passage means that if two men fight with each other and they strike a pregnant woman so that the child is “born prematurely” but neither the child or the mother is in-jured then the punishment for this shall be a fine as deter-
mined by the husband. But if either the child or the mother is injured, then the punishment shall be life for life, eye for eye, and tooth for tooth. Thus any injury to the child is just as wrong as the same injury to the mother.
