of the Gospels has been postponed due to the need for special

types.

FOREWORD

THE subject of Elementals is obscure and difficult to understand,

since it encompasses all the diversity suggested by the term the,

forces of Nature, while Western thought brings to such considerations

only the resources of misunderstood myth and superstition. In these

articles, H.P.B. answers many of the questions which are likely to

arise, and at the same time provides a foundation for understandingthese semi-intelligent forces in terms of cosmic process. She also

gives insight into the lost meanings of traditional lore of magic and

supernatural beings, uniting with the thread of occult teaching

apparently unrelated folk beliefs. The reader is helped to recognize

that actual knowledge lay behind both the popular religions of the

ancients and the speculations of old philosophers.

In the Introductory to The Secret Doctrine, H.P.B. speaks of the

millennium beginning with Buddha and Pythagoras at one end, and

the Gnostics and Neoplatonists at the other, as the only focus left

in History wherein converge for the last time the bright rays of light

streaming from the aeons of time gone by, unobscured by the hand

of bigotry and fanaticism. In these articles, she links those rays from

the past with the fragmented beliefs of the Middle Ages and the

limited but useful teachings of the Kabalists, and establishes for the

future a continuity of ideas and philosophy with the classical age.

She points out that while facts and explanations have always been

available to the West, they have had as little effect as might be hadfrom a fairy tale told in some nursery room. At the same time, she

suggests that it will not be long before ancient truth will be vindicated;
