It will be exciting to seehow our current upperclassmen settle into their new roles both onand off the field. I look forward to watching themseize the moment and grow into those impact roles as the seasonprogresses and I am confident that our athletes will continue torepresent our school in a way that will make us all proud.

I have always been impressed with the professionalism, integri-ty, and passion modeled by our coaching staff and I am encour-aged by the positive support our team has received from theWolfpack community as we transition to Coach Robinson as headcoach. CIF-SSMESSAGE TO PARE

    WOLFPACK FOOTBALL 2//

CIF SOUTHERN SECTIONA message to our Parents on our Goals and Beliefs

To our Parents:Welcome CIF Southern Section is a group of 570 public and pri-

vate schools that stretch from Lone Pine to San Clemente; from

Avalon to Barstow. The Section office represents the wishes of over85 leagues, five at-large representatives and 350,000 student ath-letes. Every year, the Section awards over 91,000 certificates, rib-bons, medals and plaques to athletes and schools in 23 varsitysports. We are part of an athletic federation that is the largest in thecountry. Our rules and by-laws represent the wishes of principalsand athletic administrators from San Ysdiro to Redding.

Many parents and observers know nothing of the Sections job, itsmission, its governance structure. We want to acquaint you withwhat we do and what we believe.

High School SportsCIF Southern Section has governed the conduct of high schoolathletics in Southern California since its inception in 1913. Prior tothat time games and contests between community schools were heldwithout governing rules; sometimes with disastrous results. In 1914the Commissioner of Secondary Schools in the state wrote to highschool principals: High school athletics are with us, and they aregenerally regarded as a natural means of expression for adolescenthuman beings. However, they must be controlled if they are toobserve their real purpose in moral and physical training.

To that end the first commissioner of athletics, S.F. (Seth) Van

Patten set out to create a high school sports governing body. Therewere a few stumbles along the way. Van Patten dealt with disputesover rules, transportation and representation. The Section evenoffered a sport called hand grenade throw in 1920. The rules andconventions we now believe in eventually evolved into our currentdocument, the Blue Book. The effort Seth Van Patten began resultedin a strong, viable, vibrant organization that places student growthand development above all else.

Academics - Integrity - AthleticsThe Section motto echoes the beliefs of the athletic administra-

tors who form our Council. Athletics plays a secondary role to aca-demics and integrity. In the spring of 2007, the State FederatedCouncil, with the support of Southern Section Council adopted a phi-losophy on student eligibility for interscholastic athletic competition. That philosophy reads in part: CIF Bylaws governing student eligi-bility are a necessary prerequisite to participation in interscholasticathletics because they:

    1. Keep the focus on athletic participation as a privilege, not a right

    CIF-SSMESSAGE TO PARENTS

    PAGE 4// WOLFPACK FOOTBALL 2010

    2. Reinforce the principles that students attend school to receivean education first; athletic participation is second

    3. Serve as a deterrent to students who transfer for athletic rea-sons and to individuals who recruit student-athletes

    4. Maintain an ethical relationship between high school athletic

programs and others who demonstrate an interest in high schoolathletes5. Pursue the Principles of Pursuing Victory with Honor.

The bylaws on student eligibility follow this philosophical state-ment. The complete list is available on the CIF web site in our BlueBook, Article 20.

It can be found at:www.cifss.orgWhile transfers are discouraged, students may transfer from one

school to another after their first year, and prior to the start of theirthird semester without any penalty. The reason? To allow students to

properly find the school that is best for them and continue eligibilitywithout interruption.

For students who transfer after the third semester, there may be alimitation on eligibility. That limitation will allow the student to par-ticipate in sports, but at a level below varsity for a period of one yearfrom the date of transfer.

High school athletics supports the development of adolescentsacademically, socially and physically. Active teens are more likely tosucceed in school, avoid drugs and develop healthy lifestyles. CIFSouthern Section governs the activities of our schools and allows forfair, balanced competition. Rules are established with the intention

that all members of a team be certified as eligible under the rulesthat relate to age, grades, semesters of participation and residence. The task occupies the efforts of four assistant commissioners, theiradministrative assistants, a commissioner and his assistant as well asdirectors of sports information, marketing and finance.

Our staff is experienced in athletic administration, believes in our mis-sion and serves our schools as they prepare students for competition.

    WOLFPACKCOACHS LETTER

    PAGE 20// WOLFPACK FOOTBALL 2010

behalf of the players and coaches, I would like to welcome you to tonights game and thank you for supporting thefootball program at Great Oak High School.

The young men you see performing on the field have dedicated themselves to hundreds of hours of hard work in the

weight room and on the practice field. I am extremely excited about our 2010 squad. My coaching staff is confidentthat our young student athletes are well prepared to compete with an extremely challenging non-league schedule, aswell as the always tough Southwestern League. It takes a special person andathlete to meet the demands of the Great Oak Football Program and theyoung men you see before you have put in the sweat, pain, and sacrificeto earn their place on the roster. We have always taken pride at GreatOak about the quality of men our football program produces. As acoaching staff, we are quite proud of the integrity demonstrated in ourplayers and their commitment to academics.

As everyone knows, a program is only as strong as the people who backit. The Great Oak Booster Club is truly second to none. We could not bemore blessed with the absolutely awesome parent support we have. All

the coaches want to extend our sincerest gratitude for the effort andmany hours our PSG has volunteered to build the football pro-gram. Thank you for supporting your student athletes at thesnack bar and all other football activities. Great Oak foot-ball would not be where we are without the dedicationof our coaching staff. I want to thank each and every one of our coaches for the enthusiasm and expertisethey bring to the field every day. I would also beremiss if I did not take a moment to thank the wivesof our coaching staff for the patience and under-standing they show over the time my staff puts into mold these young athletes.

Last but not least, I would like to give a specialthanks to the administration, staff, and faculty atGreat Oak High School. Our principal, Joe Balleweg, and ath-letic director, Bobby Arban, have truly supported my goals andvision for the program.

    Enjoy tonights game. Pack Pride!
