Gergeian

Gergean is a Khaleejy Halloween takes place on the 13th, 14th, and 15th of Ramadan. This tradition sees children going from door to door dressed festively sing-ing traditional Gergean songs in hopes of getting candy (normally Al Seedawi candy) and even the odd loose change.

PiñatasTraditionally in Mexico, especially at Christmas, piñatas are filled with fruit and candies such as guavas, orang-es, pieces of sugar cane, and wrapped candies. Some piñatas are “traps” filled with flour, confetti or water. Spe-cial baskets of treats may be given to children who come up empty handed after a piñata is broken. These are called colaciónes and are given to prevent hurt feelings.

Schultüte

The tradition of the “Schultüte” leads back to approxi-mately 1810, when children in Germany and Austria are given a big cardboard cone, prettily decorated and filled with toys, chocolate, candies, school sup-plies, and various other goodies by their parents and/or grandparents. It is given to children to make this anxiously awaited first day of school a little bit sweeter.
