Gok TurksGok Turks
• The Turks (Turkish people), whose name was first used in history in the 6th century by the Chinese, are a society whose language belongs to the Turkic language family.
• Gok Turk Empire was the first Turkish empire used the name of Turk.That’s why Gok Turks are very important for Turkish people.
• Their origins are not clear because 6th-7th century Chinese sources describe different myths. Whoever their origins were, they were the first Turkic group to use the name Turk.
• They were employed as blacksmiths for the Rouran ruler because Turkic peoples were well known from their iron working.
• Gok Turks used to live in steppes and they were nomads.
• They were warriors so horses were valuable for them.
• The most famous and important legacy of the Gok Turks were their inscriptions, which covered a general history of the Gok Turk Empire, starting from the time of Bumïn Qaghan in the mid-6th century.
• These inscriptions also contained quotes from the famous Gok Turk rulers and statesmen like Tonyuquq, Bilge Qaghan and Köl Tigin.
• Gok Turks, believed that the state-building mission had been given to them by God.The name of this faith was Göktanrı, which means “God in the sky”.That’s why,blue was very important for them.This religion was very similar to Islam.It is the biggest reason of why Turks chose Islam.
• Because of The Great Migration of peoples from Asia to Europe (4th to 6th century),there was an interaction between cultures.Gok Turks also were affected by this interaction.Some of them emigrated to Europe and they were affected by European culture.At the same time they influenced Europe,too.
• Having started in the Middle Asian geography during the era of the Huns, the developments of
building up common culture and art continued and further strengthened during Gokturk period. Especially , the custom of sculpture with human figures further developed during that period. All objects in that period are connected with the concept of death, burial and memorial ceremonies of Gokturks.
• Turkish immigrants brought “yogurt” and “ayran” to other cultures. Ayran is a drink made by mixing yogurt with water and salt.It is still one of favourite drinks in Turkey.
• Dombra was the most popular musical instrument is still in use in Central Asia.
• Clothes of Gokturk Period reflect the traditions of that period with their characterictics. No cloth has came down today from Gokturk Period.We can learn features of the clothes of that period mainly from statues and wall pictures.
• According to those figurative descriptions, we can see that clothes of Gokturk Period generally consist of long kaftans. Kaftans, which are generally as long as down to the knees, are closed by a beit at the waist. Among other parts which complete Gokturk clothes are trousers, long boots,belts and headdresses known as “börk”. We can say that these clothes were made of felt.
• Gok Turks used felt not only for their clothes. They used it for their household goods.
