VOLUME II-INDIAN STATES
' • Introductory Note • • This volume deals with statistics for Indian States as far as reported. Geueral
As in the previous issues, summary tables have been inserted to show the total figures relating to area, the classification of area, and the area under crops for each State or group of State9, and the totals for all the reporting States. The total niunber of cattle as far as reported in each of the yt'ars 1906-07 to 1925-26 has abo been included in the general summary table (No. 1). These statistics are .defective for compru:ative purposes, as additions have been • made in the number of reporting States from time to time. Two charts and an index for easy reference have, as usual, been added to the volume.
It should be note4 that, for tbe reasons explained in subsequent para graphs, the agricultural.statistics of Indian States are incomplete. They are also of far less accuracy than those of British Provinces published in Volume I • .As these States comprise one-third of the total area of India, the importance of the stati~tics relating, to them can scarcely be over-estimated.
The total area of Indian States is•462 million acres (722,()00 square miles), with a population of 72 .millions according to·the Census of 1921. These States are divjded, for purposes of a,"licultural statistics, into two main classes, namely, (1) States within the jurisdiction of Local Governments and .Adminis trations, and .(2) States having direct political relations with the Government of India. ·
( 1) States within 'the jurisdiction qf LocaZ GO!Jemments m1d .A.dministra tions.-The total area of these .States is 92,465,000 acres, with a population of 16 millions. They a,re divided into the following main gr~ups :T . . - .
Dombay States. · • Punjab States . Dihar and Orissa Stat,s Central Provinces States • • . . • North-West Frontier Province States {i'qcluding

The totai area of all these States (with the exeeption of the Tribal areas in the North-West Frontier Province) is included in the areas of the respe!'tive British Provinces stated in column 2 ofTable I ofVolumei!British India), but is shown separately in cdlumn 8 of that table in qrder to arrive at the net area of British' territory (in column 5) dealt with in that volume. But the agricul· tural. statistics dealt . with in this volume relate oilly to the following twenty- · eight States in the Bombay Presidency, the Punjab, and the United Provincoo, for which alone information is available:.- , -
