10 American Gold Cup

Now in 34th season, the FEI World Cup™ seriesbegan in 1978 with Jumping. The series was ex-tended to Dressage in 1985, Driving in 2001 andEventing in 2003. Last year, the inaugural FEI WorldCup™ Vaulting Final took place in Leipzig sharingthe spotlight with Jumping, Dressage and Drivingand this year the very first season of FEI World Cup™Vaulting will take place.

The FEI World Cup™ series, which is now outrankedonly by the FEI World Equestrian Games™ and theOlympics in importance to equestrian sport, wascreated with the idea of producing a unified seriesof equestrian competitions similar to the FormulaOne Championship.

FEI World Cup™ Jumping - early years

The event was an instant success, largely due to thesupport of the first sponsor, Volvo, which ensured aworld-class venue and well-qualified staff, and suf-ficient financing to cover travel expenses and prizemoney. This allowed the organisers to attract thevery best horses and riders from Europe and NorthAmerica.

A regional league system was established so thatriders could qualify in competitions in their own re-gion. Then, only the very best would come togetherat a grand finale to compete for the top honours.

The first season of the FEI World Cup™ Jumpingcompetitions consisted of nine indoor events in Eu-rope and seven in North America, with the Finalheld in Gothenburg in 1979. Although other conti-nents also took part from the early days of the com-petition, rivalry between European and Americanriders dominated the 1980s.

Following the success of the inaugural series, ridersfrom Australia were invited to compete in the FEIWorld Cup™ for the following season, and in 1980-

1981 a South American league was established. Inthe following year, the United States was split intoEast and West to form two separate qualifying re-gions, and then a Canadian League was created.Since then, New Zealand, Eastern Europe, Japan,Central Asia, South Africa, South East Asia, and thePersian Gulf States have also joined the FEI WorldCup™.

FEI World Cup™ Jumping today

The FEI World Cup™ Jumping now comprises 14leagues across the globe. In the 1995/1996 seasonAustria’s Hugo Simon won the very first Final, ridingGladstone. He went on to jump to victory again in1996 and in 1997, making him the first rider to winthe FEI World Cup™ three times.

From seasons two to 11, the series winners all hailedfrom North America - seven from the United Statesand three from Canada. Canada’s Mario Deslauri-ers, who took the title with Aramis in 1984 at age 19,remains the youngest-ever winner.

Germany holds the record for the greatest numberof victories, winning nine out of the 33 seasons, while the United States has won seven. Next comesAustria with four.

Hugo Simon’s three victories were an undoubtedlyimpressive feat, although in recent years theachievements of Rodrigo Pessoa and MeredithMichaels-Beerbaum have eclipsed the records ofprevious riders.

Rolex Testimonee and Brazilian champion RodrigoPessoa’s partnership with his stallion Baloubet duRouet produced three consecutive wins: 1998 inHelsinki, 1999 in Gothenburg and 2000 in Las Vegas.German rider Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum, an-other Rolex Testimonee, and her mount Shutterfly –retired at 2011 CHIO Aachen - have also been a

highly celebrated partnership, equalling the threevictories of Rodrigo Pessoa and Hugo Simon by win-ning in 2005, in 2008 and 2009 in Las Vegas.

With the singular exception of Rodrigo Pessoa, allFEI World Cup™ Jumping winners until now havecome from either Europe or North America. How-ever, the series continues to evolve around theworld, and in 2006 the Final was held in KualaLumpur.

In the course of the 2007-2008 season, the event’s30th anniversary, Rolex became the title sponsor ofthe series. Through the commitment and support ofRolex, now in its fourth year of sponsorship, theRolex FEI World Cup™ competition has continued togrow in influence and stature.

FEI World Cup™ Jumping Rules

FEI World Cup™ Jumping riders and horses are putto the test on courses that are highly technical re-quiring courage, scope, accuracy and control. Ath-letes and their trainers always walk the course onfoot before the start of the competition in order tolearn the course and work out the best route be-tween the 10 -13 knockable obstacles, which canhave double and treble combinations and featuressuch as water jumps.

e fences are often eye-catching and perfectly suitedto television and on-site fans and the course designerwill often incorporate a national flavour featuring locallandmarks and attractions.

Penalties

The obstacles are numbered and horse and ridermust jump them in the correct order, aiming to com-plete the course without lowering any of the fencesor landing in the water. Knockdowns and refusals, when the horse stops or runs out at a fence, are pe-nalised. A knockdown is only penalised if the horselowers the highest part of the fence, so if a lowerpole is knocked there is no penalty.

If the horse or rider falls they are eliminated.

The winner is the horse and rider combination withthe lowest number of penalties, but the clock is alsoa deciding factor.
