Schedules are subject to change.
Things to Look For in the 2017 Golf SeasonBy Tom Bopp, Academy Director
Here in the Northeast we are all too familiar with the ups and
downs of our unpredictable and sometimes unfortunate weather.
For golfers this can be doubly frustrating, especially in February
and March. With the arrival of spring, though, the golf itch starts
to set in. Every nice day is a preview of what we long for – being
out on the golf course with friends and family, continually trying
to tame the game that can’t be won, only played.
As we look toward a new golf season, golfers will also be
following tantalizing story lines applicable to the professional
ranks; which players will shine, how dramatic will the upcoming
season’s major tournaments be, will we have the pleasure of
hosting any major events in the New York area?
In spite of weather-related obstacles, the metropolitan area
has a rich golf tradition and routinely plays host to the
game’s biggest events. Just this past year we saw the PGA
Championship and the Barclays played on prestigious local
tracks. The year 2017 will be no different, with three first-rate
events, all with international implications, taking place in our own
backyards. Here are just a few things to look forward to, locally
and nationally!
BRIAN S.
It is the year of Dustin Johnson. I hope he stays hot and makes it through the masses to finish the
season with double digits.
NICK W.
I’m currently a 5 handicap and hoping to achieve my
goal of becoming a scratch golfer.

NATIONALLY
Will we see a Tiger comeback? He is undoubtedly the most popular and
polarizing player in the game and his attempt to regain his once legendary
dominance has had plenty of ups and downs. Tiger showed promise with his
performance in the Bahamas in December 2016 but he has since suffered
multiple injury-related setbacks.
Can Jordan Spieth recover from his meltdown at the Masters in
2016? Spieth is considered one of the heirs apparent to Tiger and a key
figure for the future of golf after his historic 2015 season. He seemed poised
to continue where he left off in 2016 when he had a 4 shot lead in the final
round of the Masters, until he dumped two shots in the water of the par 3,
12th hole. He was never able to recover and watched Danny Willet take home
the green jacket. The remainder of the 2016 season was mediocre by his
standards, winning a couple of tournaments but failing to be a factor in the
majors or the Ryder Cup.
Can Phil Michelson win one final major? “Lefty” is one of the most
popular players on the tour and fans will be wondering if he can win one final
major before he enters the twilight of his career. He hasn’t won a tournament
since his British Open victory in 2013, but he showed flashes of his old
brilliance in the single matches against Sergio Garcia in the Ryder Cup,
recording 10 birdies.
Can the USGA recover from two lackluster US Opens? The US Open
at Chambers Bay (the first ever held in the Pacific Northwest) drew heavy
criticism from players and fans alike. Dustin Johnson’s breakout victory at
historic Oakmont in 2016 was also marred by a controversial penalty levied
against Johnson retroactively, bringing the USGA under heavy fire from
commentators, players and fans. They will look to bounce back and restore
the luster of America’s national championship by hosting the championship at
another first-time host venue, Ern Hills in Wisconsin.
ALLISON C.
I’m looking forward to the performance camp at Chelsea Piers, that’s always fun. I’m also looking forward to trying
to play in a few tournaments this summer, I think I’m better now, so I want to see how I can do in a tournament.
HOLLY C.
My goal for this summer is to be able to play a round with my Mom, who was a competitive
golfer back in the U.K.

THE GOLF ACADEMY AT CHELSEA PIERSWith the most comprehensive training and development
programs in New York City, the Golf Academy is where
golfers of all skill levels come to learn, practice and play.
Golf 101 is a one-day, 90-minute school specifically designed for students
who are new to the sport. The class focuses on the fundamentals of the game,
including golf course layout, equipment and etiquette, so that you can learn with
confidence. Offered most Saturdays and Sundays at 11:00am.
Beginner School (I and II) consists of 90-minute classes that meet once a week
for four consecutive weeks. In addition to small group instruction on the driving
range, golfers also participate in one-on-one video swing analysis with a teaching
professional for an in-depth study of the student’s swing. Graduates of
Beginner School I and II are guaranteed to make consistent, solid
contact with the ball and will gain the confidence necessary to get out on a golf course.
Lesson Packages From beginners to low-handicappers, anyone can benefit
from a series of private lessons. Lesson Packages are available in packs of
five and ten, and are ideal for those who prefer individual instruction and more
scheduling flexibility.
Players School meets for 1.5 hours, for
four consecutive weeks, and is designed
for intermediate golfers who can
consistently shoot around or below 100
and are looking to improve their course
play. Players work on lag putting and chipping
close to the hole, approach shots to the green and how
to hit the fairway with a driver. Consistency on the golf course is key;
in this class, players develop a solid pre-shot routine in order to learn
how to aim each shot.

from the academy:
IMPROVING THE HIGH-TECH WAYThe Golf Academy at Chelsea Piers is committed to providing
its students with the most up-to-date teaching technologies.
Below are three of the most popular tools the teaching pros
use to help their clients improve their swing.
BodiTrak S.H.I.F.T System
The wireless, portable BodiTrak S.H.I.F.T. System captures and quantifies, in image
and data form, the balance of a golfer through all stages of the swing. The first step
is to address the ball as you normally would while standing on the BodiTrak pres-
sure mat and then swing away. The S.H.I.F.T System provides 3D and 2D images
depicting the amount of weight that is distributed between the heel and toes of
each foot. Not only does this give both the student and instructor the opportunity
to gauge balance and shifting weight, but it also allows a deeper analysis on
swing issues. The BodiTrak S.H.I.F.T. System can also show how a lack of weight
transfer to the front foot may be costing you distance off the tee.
V1 Golf App
The V1 golf app is at the forefront of personalized golf
instruction. At the touch of a button the V1 app allows
you to record and store your swings, compare side by
side with the best players in the world and submit your
videos to your teaching professional for review. The state-
of-the-art drawing tool allows
your instructor to highlight
the areas of your swing
that need work, and send
you drills to take with you.
The voiceover and playback
options allow the student to
review the instruction they’ve
received at any time. You can also store all of your data
in your own digital swing catalog to keep track of your
progress.
Flightscope
The sport’s premier 3D Doppler
golf radar system allows students
and their instructors to gain valu-
able insight into a player’s swing
and uses a mountain of data
to guide the tweaks needed
to produce the best golf game
of your life. Once you address
and strike the ball, Flightscope utilizes its radar
tracking technology to create a 3D image of your shot
along with carry distance, roll distance and flight path.
Flightscope also calculates and catalogues crucial data
such as ball speed, swing speed, “smash factor,” vertical
and horizontal launch angle, and swing path.
For more information on additional technology offerings or
to book a lesson, call the Golf Academy at 212.336.6444.

MAKE SOLID CONTACT WITH YOUR IRONS
• David Byrne, UK PGAMany students struggle to make
solid contact with their irons.
One major issue I frequently
encounter is students hitting
“behind the ball,” meaning their
clubs make contact with the ground
before they make contact with the ball. The
cause of this is due to not having enough lower body movement in the
downswing. To remedy this, once you get to the top of your backswing,
concentrate on driving your outside knee down and toward the ball.
(Depending on your dominant hand, this could be the left or right
knee.) This will help you carry your upper body forward and produce a
more fluid and downward strike into the ball.
from the academy:
SWING TIPS FROM THE PROSSome helpful insights to get your game on track.
DON’T RELY ON
YOUR ARMS
• Tim Townsend, PGAThe golf swing isn’t always
as complicated as we make it
out to be. One issue I often see in my
students is the use of their arms to drive club head speed.
To help with this, address the tee like you normally would
and cross your arms across your chest. With your left arm
grabbing your right shoulder and your right arm grabbing
your left, simply twist your back away from the target with
your right shoulder rising slightly. This drill is perfect for
a warm-up and will give you a better feel for proper body
rotation in the backswing.
SWING SLOWLY
WITH TEMPO
• Frank Graniero, PGAOne of the most common
flaws I see among my
students is swinging too
hard, which usually produces
a swing that’s too fast. This
typically throws off the proper sequence
in the swing. (I have only encountered a small handful
of students in my life that swung too slowly!) If you are
striking the ball inconsistently, try slowing your swing
down and developing a tempo that works for you. This will
strengthen your balance and allow the proper sequence of
motion to be maintained throughout your swing.

Bethpage Black was recently ranked #4 on Golf Magazine’s list
of top 100 public courses in the country and has hosted the U.S.
Open twice (2002 and 2009). The course is also one of the most
challenging courses in the country – in fact, first-timers may be
shocked when they first see the iconic “warning” sign that greets
them upon arrival. The course is also one of the toughest tee
times to secure. Luckily you can experience the next best thing by
playing a round on the Black Course in our Full Swing Simulators
— right here at the Golf Club!
How realistic is the simulator experience compared to the real
course? The Black course is walking only, with tons of hills and
valleys to traverse over 18 holes. Playing the simulators, you’ll lose
the feel of the hills and the uneven lies in the fairways or rough.
That being said, the outstanding sightlines and unique nature of
each hole is remarkably similar in the simulators.
One factor which adds to the degree of difficulty of the Black
course is its length. This is of course dependent upon which set
of tees you choose to play, but generally speaking the length
of the course is one of its most challenging components; this is
abundantly obvious on the simulators as well. Hitting solid drives
and taking the appropriate angles on your tee shots and approach
shots is a necessity, whether you’re on the actual course or in our
simulators.
Spend some quality practice time in the simulators and you’ll be
ready to tackle one of most challenging, and rewarding courses
ever designed.
To reserve your next Simulator Session at the Golf Club,
call 212.336.6400 or reserve online today.
Bethpage Black in Farmingdale, Long Island is
widely regarded as the jewel in the crown of metropolitan area
golf courses — are you ready?

For many of my clients, the highlight of the year is their annual golf outing with friends.
My favorite for a group outing? Bandon Dunes Golf Resort in southwest Oregon.
Each year I travel with my golf professional friends to
Bandon, which features two of the top 10 rated public
courses in the United States.1 Our trip begins with three
practice rounds: Day 1 (Best Ball); Day 2 (Alternate
Shot); Day 3 (Lowest Score Wins). We then move into
four competitive tournament rounds. The resort has an
excellent practice facility, four amazing courses, and two
par 3 courses, most of which are located on the Pacific
Ocean shoreline. Since the Pacific can stir up some
tricky storms, you never know if you will get a calm week
or have windy weather. All of this adds to the fun and
challenge of playing Bandon.
Tips for planning your next golf outing:
Pick a group of friends that will provide enough
competition to bring out your best game.
Play for prizes (dinner & drinks, Titleist Pro V1 golf balls,
a souvenir from the Bandon pro shop)
Facebook is a good place to trash talk before the trip.
Get in a few practice rounds at the resort before you
start the tournament.

2017 PRESIDENTS CUP AT LIBERTY NATIONALThis past fall, fans were treated to an amazing and as of late, rare occurrence — an exciting Ryder
Cup where the American team emerged triumphant against the heavily favored European squad.
The Ryder Cup is an event that
golf fans look forward to every two
years. It’s a time where an individual
sport is transformed into a team
competition, where patriotism is on
full display and you get to see many
of the best players in the world face
off against each other in ways they
never do in a standard tournament.
During the off years, another
exciting international team event
takes place — the Presidents Cup.
While the Ryder Cup is limited to
American players and players
from the European continent,
the Presidents Cup pits the best
players from America against the
best international players from Asia,
Australia, Africa and Central and
South America. Historically Europe
and America produced the best
players in the world, relegating the
Presidents Cup to second class
status. However, with Jason Day
and Adam Scott of Australia, Hideki
Matsuyama of Japan and a bevy
of tough South African players, the
Presidents Cup will be hosting a
roster of players that can certainly
rival the Ryder Cup.
In 2017, this exciting competition
will be held in our own backyard at
Liberty National Golf Club in Jersey
City. Liberty National is an impressive
golf course with notable views of
the New York City skyline. Having
previously hosted the Barclays
Tournament in 2009 and 2013 it is
no stranger to big time golf events.
In fact the PGA TOUR has a 25-year
partnership with Liberty National,
with 10 PGA TOUR events to be
held at the venue over the course of
the agreement.
Make sure to check out The
Presidents Cup this year and head
over to Liberty National to see some
world-class golf!IN 2015, THE U.S. BEAT THE

Golf has long been known for
rules that are too complicated, too
numerous and in many cases too
punitive.
Golf’s two most prominent
governing bodies have taken steps to
try and remedy the issue by making
some serious and long overdue
changes to the rules of golf. The
challenge is to try and modernize
and streamline the rules while also
preserving the cherished tradition
and history of the game.
SOME HIGHLIGHTS
A player can repair any blemish on
the green that may be in the line of
their putt. The previous rules allowed
ball marks to be repaired, but not a
mark or indent made by a cleat.
Grounding your club in hazard will
no longer be penalized.
Being hit with your own golf ball is
no longer a two shot penalty.
The allotted amount of time to
search for a lost ball has been
shortened from five minutes to three
minutes.
When “taking a drop” or dropping
a new ball because your original has
been lost or you need to seek relief,
the player is no longer required to
drop the ball from shoulder height.
The new proposed rule only requires
the ball to fall to the ground without
hitting a foreign object before
coming to rest on the ground.
If your ball or ball marker
accidently moves on the putting
green, there is no penalty; you
simply put it back to its original
position.
You can leave the flagstick
unattended and in the hole with
your ball on the green and there is
no penalty if your ball strikes the
flagstick.
You can take relief from an
embedded or plugged ball anywhere
with the exception of bunkers.
Before you and your buddies start
playing by the new rules, the USGA
has issued a reminder: no scores
played under the new rules can be
submitted for handicap purposes
since they are only proposed rule
changes at this point!

JUNIOR GOLFER HIGHLIGHT
JACK CRAVENBy Chelsea Martinez
New York City native Jack Craven, a
sophomore at the Beacon School, first
visited the Golf Club in September 2015
as a wide-eyed 8th grader. Inspired by his
grandfather, Jack knew there was something
about the game that intrigued him. He started at
the Academy with private lessons; just 2-1/2 years later,
Jack’s interest in golf grew to a passion as he worked his
way to the top of the Junior Elite program.
“I WAS HOOKED RIGHT FROM THE START. ONCE I FIRST GAVE GOLF A TRY I KNEW IT WAS
SOMETHING I WANTED TO GET BETTER AT.”
Jack brings an impressive amount of discipline to the
game. With the support of his professional coaches, Steve
Keogh and Chance Scheffing, Jack adheres to a focused
skills development plan that includes posture, grip in the
backswing, head movement, and body weight awareness
during his swing. When asked to describe the most impor-
tant lesson he’s learned while training at Chelsea Piers,
Jack readily answers: “Less is more. I have really worked
hard this year on making my practices more effective.
Instead of going to the range, hitting a ball and hoping
for improvement, I go to the range with one goal in mind.
So far, this strategy has significantly helped me improve.”
In preparation for his third summer of competitive
tournaments, Jack plans to play five-six rounds of golf a
month in the spring and three-four rounds a week once
school ends, with practice and lessons at the Golf Club
inbetween. Jack’s ultimate goal is to play in college – and
to someday play a round of golf with his dream foursome,
Rickie Fowler, Jordan Speith and former president Barak
Obama.
The Academy is committed to supporting the dreams
and ambitions of its junior golfers. The journey can start at
any age – we look forward to following Jack’s promising
career as it unfolds.

BIG EVENTS START AT THE GOLF CLUBBy Teej Matchhar
As the Special Events Manager for the Golf Club, I’m
frequently amazed by the number of people that tell me they
first saw our facility on TV or in a movie. In 2010, the Golf
Club was the scene for a wild car chase and helicopter
shoot out in the cult comedy classic, “The Other Guys”
with Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg. True love prevailed in
the romantic comedy “Serendipity,” with pivotal plot points
occurring on the driving range. The Law & Order franchise
has also been a frequent visitor where active crime scenes
are – luckily – purely fictional.
Since opening in 1995, the number and variety of
event requests we’ve received boggles the mind. Last
fall Audi launched its Major League Soccer partnership
and introduced the Audi Player Index by hosting a soc-
cer pick-up match at the Golf Club, turning the 200-yard
driving range into a soccer field. One Father’s Day, Nerf
hosted the World’s Largest Father-Child Catch at the Golf
Club with football’s first family — Archie, Peyton and Eli
Manning. And in June 2014, Golf legend Sir Nick Faldo
joined Glenmorangie Single Malt Scotch Whisky as they
celebrated their third year as the Official Spirit of The U.S.
Open. Glenmorangie took over the Golf Club fairway for a
panel discussion, golf clinic and whisky pairing dinner with
special guests.
Special events at the Golf Club range from children’s
birthday celebrations to bachelor parties in the Full Swing
simulators, from corporate “off-sites” in the Ryder Cup
Room that provide a welcome respite from boring, hotel
conference centers, to Golf Club events that put focus on
the fun and social nature of golf – Friday Night Swings and
Girls Night Out.
We invite all of our customers to challenge us with their
particular vision for an event, whether it is a social, corpo-
rate or a large-scale media event. We’ve already proven we
can coordinate the landing of a helicopter on the driving
range turf – we’re ready and able to help you with your
next event.

“…THE PGA TOUR, HAS SEEN AN IMPRESSIVE INCREASE IN MILLENNIALS

LET’S GET SOCIAL
By Kendall Burke
Golf isn’t just your dad’s
sport anymore. Thanks to
fresh young talent, state-of-
the-art technology, and unique
entertainment destinations such
as Topgolf, the game is brimming
with excitement and personality.
While heading straight to the course can be intimi-
dating for new golfers, hitting some balls on a range
can be an easy first step to getting into the game.
At the Golf Club, we believe golf is the most social
sport there is. With our Girls Night Out and Friday
Night Swings social golf events, we look to give
those new to the game a friendly and stress-free
environment to try out the sport.
At Girls Night Out, guests can unwind after work
with drinks and snacks, network and socialize with
other women, and receive swing tips from our golf
professionals.
Friday Night Swings is a great alternative to happy
hour at your local bar. Guests are invited to enjoy
open hitting on the driving range, drinks and snacks,
instruction from our Golf Academy pros and access
to the Full Swing simulators.
Whether you’re a seasoned golfer or new to
the sport, the Golf Club at Chelsea Piers provides
multiple ways to get social and get better at the
great game of golf.
Girls Night Out and Friday Night Swings
are held April - October. Visit our website
for more details.
