building a solid swing

a solid swing starts with a good athletic set up. and solid foundation

and solid core rotation. Without these basic fundamentals the a good swing can’t happen. even a good miss can’t happen. let’s start with balance. if we look at any other sport in order to execute the task at hand the player must be in balance from the start. The set up for most sports is the same. Golf ,football, baseball , tennis, basketball. all start with a balanced athletic set up. The player is bent at the hip socket and their weight is on the back of the balls of the feet. if the player let’s their hands hang down from the proper set up the fingers should be right over the ends of their shoelaces. Take a look at the photo below.

The darker player is in a balanced posture. if he was to let go of the club and let his hands hang down they would be right where we stated they should be over the shoelaces. The lighter one is hunched over. Most of his weight is on his toes. His hand would drop out past his feet. notice also how the player in a good set up is more upright and his chest is facing forward not pointing down at the ground. i see so many players in this

poor position and when they go to swing the club they hit the ball fat. This more upright position will allow him to make a fuller turn. it will also help him stay centered throughout the swing and have a better angle of approach into the ball. next we need to know more about the importance of staying centered through the entire swing. Sometimes this idea is misinterpreted. What i mean by staying centered also has a lot to do with staying connected. That was Ben Hogan’s key to solid ball striking.”

a solid connection between the arms and body. Both working togeather as a unit in harmony. The way i help my students understand this is to keep their top hand in front of their center during the entire swing. The top hand is the hand that’s closet to your body not the club head. This now makes the core or the torso the driving force of power and the main factor that squares up the clubface at impact. Below is a photo with a line showing where the relationship should be between the top hand and the core or players center is.

The Best way to become a great ball striker and have a consistent swing is to stay connected through core rotation.

Crafted by the company’s Chief Designer roger Cleveland, the x Series JaWS

winn introduces winnlite grip technology for 2010

as part of its new product line for 2010, Winn is introducing the Winnlite Grip Technology, an

advanced injection molding process that significantly reduces grip weight to increase club swing speed and generate greater distance and accuracy.

a typical rubber grip weighs around 50 grams. Winnlite Grip Technology produces a grip that weighs as little as 25 grams - about half the weight of a conventional grip. By lightening the grip, you will be able to feel the increased swing weight immediately.

taylormade introduces Penta tP

TaylorMade Golf has introduced the Penta TP, a new Tour ball designed to deliver a superior balance of performance in five key shot categories, the result of three years of research and development.

“We spend a lot of time with tour pros asking questions,” said Dean

Snell, head of TaylorMade golf ball research & Development. “Most think the ball they play is lacking somewhere. Some say their ball performs great in the short game but costs them distance, while other players said the opposite about their ball. Some feel their ball performs great off the middle and short irons but isn’t long enough off the tee and doesn’t spin enough on short shots.

titleist introduces new “condition of competition” vokey wedges ahead of groove rule change

in response to the imminent new groove regulations designed by the uSGa and r&a in an attempt to limit the effectiveness of shots from the rough, Titleist has introduced the newest line of its successful vokey Design Spin Milled wedges.

The new wedges are appropriately titled C-C wedges, with the initials standing for “Condition of Competition,” a reference to the uSGa and r&a adopting a policy that prohibits PGa Tour and top-level amateur players from playing non-conforming irons and wedges after the new regulations take effect on Jan. 1, 2010.

cobra golf not holding back with Zl driver

Cobra Golf has unveiled the company’s most innovative, highest-performing driver ever, the zl, which is designed to help all golfers achieve more distance. zl stands for zero

limits; which speaks to the mindset Cobra engineers had when they set out to design the longest driver in Cobra’s 36-year history.

The club’s advanced Multi-Material Construction and adjustable flight Technology are complete game-changers. The superior performance of the zl driver is supported by the fact

that Cobra PGa staff players Geoff ogilvy, J.B. Holmes and Jason Gore have already put the new driver in play.

nike’s sQ machspeed driver features total swing aerodynamics

When winter nears its end in March next year, and most golfers are thinking that spring can’t come fast enough, a new and exciting nike Golf introduction will provide all the speed a golfer needs to put velocity into the golf season. The new SQ Machspeed driver will use the power

of aerodynamics to help golfers hit the ball farther and straighter - all due to speed.

While consumers will have to wait for the official introduction at retail on March 1, 2010, nike Tour athlete Justin leonard can’t get it in his bag fast enough. after successfully testing the new SQ Machspeed driver, leonard likely will be using the nike SQ Machspeed for the first time in competition at The Presidents Cup from oct. 8-11, 2009.

Perhaps they’re considered a dying breed, relics of what used to exist for

golfers out there. The local golf shop, the one where everyone knows your name, and, sometimes, your handicap. They used to be more bountiful, many found at driving ranges or near your favorite course.

But with the downward economy and subsequent decline of golf due to economic times, many local golf stores and businesses have been forced to close their doors, unable to turn a profit or compete with a chain golf store.

“a golf customer is not loyal,” said Steve Pitts, owner of Steve’s World of Golf in Hudson, a local golf store that specializes in custom golf fitting that’s been in business for 20 years. “They go on the internet or to eBay to find the best deals, so us golf store owners have to recognize that most won’t have loyalty that a certain store might get.”

of course, major stores such as edwin Watts or Golfsmith, and even Dick’s Sporting Goods carrying more golf products, have added to the pressure and closures of the local golf stores. However, Bob vanSweden, owner of the Golf repair Center in largo, says stores need to know the customers, especially the one that walks through the door.

“The consumer looking to save money is not my customer,” vanSweden said. “i’m not here to sell golf clubs at the cheapest price because i’m here to provide a service that’s above everyone else, especially the chains. and that service is to get that golfer the best golf clubs for them and their game.”

Stores such as Steve’s World of Golf, the Golf repair Center and the two T&D Golf stores run by brothers Deason and Ben Smith, function solely on custom fitting clubs for avid golfers and getting those golfers similar, if not better, prices than the chain stores.

However, how the economy has fallen, especially in golf, has affected the way these stores do business.

Pitts, for example, offers a try-then-buy program for clubs, allowing a

customer to try out a club for week, even take it on the course, to see if he or she likes the feel of it.

vanSweden, on the other hand, has kept up with every technological advance golf has to offer, including a state-of-the-art launch monitor, and soon, vanSweden is adding a putting video system to help him custom fit putters for golfers. vanSweden’s store is also located on a driving range, so that allows customers to try the products in a more realistic golf setting.

“i’m one of the last of the dying golf stores,” Pitts said. “in my 20 years in retail, i’ve seen many (other golf) stores open and close. When you come to this store, you’re not buying a football or a baseball, which anyone can throw. you’re buying clubs that are specific, that need to be specific.

“These stores should be for the community, for the local golf community, and to me, that should be basic Business 101 because those customers can keep the store surviving. it’s just now, most golfers are loyal to the prices, not the store.”

vanSweden says at least nine local golf stores have closed since the golf economy went south more than year or so ago. He

went as far to add that he was surprised to see Pro Golf Discount of Clearwater close because of it’s long existence in local economy.

if it’s one thing the local stores agree on is the golf community needs their stores. owners need the business to survive, but golfers need a place that will take care of their game and equipment and not just their wallet, which is what chain stores do.

and as these local golf stores adapt their business strategies to weather the tough times, owners, such as Pitts and vanSweden, know that their personal one-on-one service is their most viable asset.

“People need the local golf store to take care of them,” Pitts said. “Business, in general, should be very personal. That’s how a golf store should run.”

“i’m not going to do combat with the chain stores,” vanSweden added. “i’ve got to work on whoever comes through the door because they’re going to be paying customers. We can’t cater to everyone, and i know who i can cater to. That’s who i’m going to worry about giving the best service to.”

36 Holes by Arnold Palmer and Rees Jones & Luxurious On-Course Lodging

in 1991, famed golf course architect rees Jones linked his name forever

with the great golf of the north Carolina Sandhills when he debuted Talamore Golf Club. Since receiving the designation as Best new Course in the South by Golf Digest, Talamore has been consistently ranked at the forefront for outstanding courses in the Pinehurst area. Talamore’s clubhouse, pool and cabana are all conveniently located next to the Talamore Golf villas which were constructed shortly after the club’s opening. The Talamore Golf villas have long been a favorite among golfers vacationing to the area for their wonderful amenities and panoramic views of the resort Course’s signature finishing hole.

The second facility added to the Talamore Golf resort was The Mid South Club, originally known as Pinehurst Plantation. a private club, Mid South features a fantastic layout designed by “The king” arnold Palmer. in 2005, the lodges at Mid South opened, offering the most well-appointed amenities in the Sandhills and giving the resort over 200 rooms of luxurious and comfortable accommodations, most featuring expansive golf course views.

The Talamore Golf resort has grown to be the premier golf vacation in the Sandhills. over 90% of our customers repeat or refer new business - that is unheard of in the resort industry and is a tribute to Talamore’s unwavering commitment to the total customer experience.

The World-renoWned Talamore llamas Talamore’s resort Course opened its doors in 1991 with significant press coverage. yes, the opening of the exciting rees Jones design was highly anticipated in the Sandhills, but it was

the lovable llama caddies that stole the show. offering llamas as caddies proved to be an instant hit, especially with the press. over 5,000 articles were written and published all over the globe. Suffice it to say, the Talamore llamas put the club on the international golfing map.

Today, our llama caddies are available for your round throughout the cooler months. although not required for your round at Talamore, one trip around the links with “Dollie”, “Tallie” or any of our other special friends makes for great memories.
