Finalists will be announced this spring in The Commercial Appeal and on commercialappeal.com. Award winners will be revealed at The Commercial Appeal Sports Awards, to be held June 9 at the Orpheum. Boys Coach of the Year Cliff Frisby, MUS The Owls were back on top of the Division 2-AA pile in 2016, winning the state tourna- ment after failing to qualify the year before. It’s the second coach of the year honor in three years for Frisby, whose team also won the West Region title. Girls Coach of the Year Cynthia Giannini, St. Agnes Once again, the Stars were the dominant Division 2 golf team around, winning the West Region championship for the 12th year in a row. St. Agnes then did a three- peat at state with Rachel Heck also winning the individual title. Susan Morris Hutchison junior The talented Morris led the Sting team to state and she did well as an individual, tying for sixth place in Division 2-AA. She’s a three- time all-metro performer. Grant Hill Harding senior Hill tied for the fourth at the Division 2-A region tournament before wrapping up his high school career with a fourth-place result at state. He’s a repeat all-metro performer. Rachel Heck St. Agnes freshman The only golfer to get the better of Abby Heck was her younger sister Rachel. Her Division 2-AA region title helped the Stars claim their 12th straight title in that tourna- ment and she dominated at state, shooting 10-under to win by 15 strokes. Winston Margaritis St. George’s junior Margaritis — on the all-metro team for the fourth straight year — captured the Division 2-A championship by five strokes at 4-under 140. His performance led the Gryphons to the team championship for the third time in four years. Maribeth Peevy St. Benedict senior Another veteran in the big tournaments, Peevy qualified for the D2-AA tournament as an individual and finished in fifth place while making the all-metro squad for the third time. Davis Irving St. George’s junior Following his state title and golfer of the year award for 2015, Irving tied for fifth in Manchester this year. His play helped St. George’s win the team title, the sixth in school history. Aubree Jones Brighton senior “Stellar” is the only word to describe Jones’ career. She finished second (by one stroke) at the AAA tournament and ends her career with two state titles, two runners-up and a golfer of the year award. Goodman Rudolph MUS senior Rudolph won the Division 2-AA state championship in 2016, shooting rounds of 69 and 72 to win by two strokes. He was named golfer of the year as a sophomore, the year he won his first state title. Megan Tang St. Mary’s sophomore Tang’s play led the Turkeys to the Division 2-A team champi- onship and earned her a tie for third among individuals. She is another all- metro three-peater. Boys Coach of the YearCliff Frisby, MUS

Girls Coach of the YearCynthia Giannini, St. Agnes

Once again, the Stars were the dominant Division 2 golf team around, winning the West Region championship for the 12th

year in a row. St. Agnes then did a three-peat at state with Rachel Heck also winning

Berry is on the all-metro team for the first time after a strong season that culminated with him helping MUS to the Division 2-AA team crown. Individually, he placed fifth, one of five Owls in the top three.

Jayna ChoiHouston sophomore

Last year’s AAA champion as a freshman, Choi shot 3-over in 2016 to tie for fifth. Her efforts led Houston to a third-place finish in the team competition and she also won the Region 8 title.

Jack CrosbyMUS senior

Another standout on the deep and talented Owls team, Crosby finished even-par at state to tie for fourth while helping MUS win the team championship for the sixth time in school history.

Victoria EnglandSt. George’s sophomore

A three-time all-metro per-former, England won the Divi-sion 2-A state championship as an eighth-grader in 2014 and came pretty close this past year, finishing in second place four strokes behind.

The talented Morris led the Sting team to state and she did well as an individual, tying for sixth place in Division 2-AA. She’s a three-time all-metro performer.

Grant HillHarding senior

Hill tied for the fourth at the Division 2-A region tournament before wrapping up his high school career with a fourth-place result at state. He’s a repeat all-metro performer.

Rachel HeckSt. Agnes freshman

The only golfer to get the better of Abby Heck was her younger sister Rachel. Her Division 2-AA region title helped the Stars claim their 12th straight title in that tourna-ment and she dominated at state, shooting 10-under to win by 15 strokes.

Winston MargaritisSt. George’s junior

Margaritis — on the all-metro team for the fourth straight year — captured the Division 2-A championship by five strokes at 4-under 140. His performance led the Gryphons to the team championship for the third time in four years.

Aubree JonesBrighton senior

Goodman RudolphMUS senior

Rudolph won the Division 2-AA state championship in 2016, shooting rounds of 69 and 72 to win by two strokes. He was named golfer of the year as a sophomore, the year he won his first state title.

Megan TangSt. Mary’s sophomore

Tang’s play led the Turkeys to the Division 2-A team champi-onship and earned her a tie for third among individuals. She is another all-metro three-peater.

Boys Coach of the YearBill Gardner, Bartlett

The Panthers were vastly improved under Gardner this year, with nearly every runner

on the roster shaving his times considerably from past seasons. It resulted in a fifth-

place finish at the state AAA meet.

Girls Coach of the YearClint Daniels, Houston

In his first season with the Mustangs, Daniels’ team dominated local competition

before placing third in the AAA meet against some very strong competition.

The eight semifinalists will be narrowed down to three finalists in the spring.

CROSS COUNTRY

Kyle EdwardsCBHS senior

Edwards was a standout on a strong Brothers team, placing fourth in the Shelby County meet before coming in 10th at state in a time of 17:01.56. That result powered CBHS to a third-place team finish.

Foster HudsmithWhite Station senior

A two-time finalist under the old Best of the Preps format, Hudsmith was strong again in 2016. He won the Region 8 championship before going on to a good showing a state, taking 17th in the AAA meet in 16:35.93. That was the best finish for a local AAA boys runner.

Luke McNairBartlett senior

The Panthers were resurgent this season and McNair was one of the main reasons, finishing first in Region 7 before finishing 31st at state in a time of 16:52.74.

Chris WallsArlington senior

The other half of Arlington’s potent 1-2 punch, Walls finished 10th in the county meet and third in Region 7 after winning the previous year. His 19th-place finish at state (16:39.66) helped the Tigers to a 13th-place team result.

Christopher RayderHouston senior

Last year’s runner of the year had a very strong regular sea-son, winning the Shelby County meet before taking second in Region 8.

Avery WoodBartlett junior

Wood had a break-through year for a break-through team. Bartlett finished fifth in the AAA team standings, the best show-ing of any Shelby County boys team, as Wood came in 27th in a time of 16:50.79.

Ryan RedmanArlington senior

Redman came through in two of the biggest meets of the year, finishing runner-up at both the county and Region 7 meets. At state, he was 47th in a time of 17:06.72.

Raymond WynneSt. Benedict senior

For the second year in a row, the talented Wynne was the top Shelby County finisher in Divi-sion 2-AA. After placing ninth in 2015 he ended up eighth in a time of 16:53.37.

BOYS SEMIFINALISTS

Ella BaranHouston junior

Baran is a three-time all-metro performer and a two-time final-ist under the former Best of the Preps system. In 2016, she won the county meet (18:16.70) before finishing sixth at the state AAA meet (18:24.50).

Skylar BoogerdArlington sophomore

Boogerd’s efforts helped Ar-lington to a strong team show-ing at state; she finished 10th in 18:59.03 as the Tigers claimed 12th. She won the Region 7-AAA title in 18:28 while taking second in the county meet. She was in the final five last year as well.

Erica FisherArlington sophomore

Fisher was also a finalist under the old BOP format last year and did well again in 2016. She was fifth in the county meet and sec-ond in the region before running 17:58.29 at state to finish third, the best showing of any Shelby County girl.

Nora TillmannsHutchison sophomore

A fixture on the all-metro team despite being only in the 10th grade, Tillmanns finished eighth in the county meet in a time of 21:02. She then ran 20:42.16 at state to end up ninth, the top local girl in the D2-AA meet.

Michelle MyersHouston senior

Last year’s runner of the year, Myers closed out her high school career with a 19:45.92 effort at the AAA meet, good for 22nd overall. She took third at the county meet (19:29) and won Region 8 (19:30).

Gracelyn WallsArlington sophomore

Walls was consistent across the board for the Tigers and coach Dennis Harris; she fin-ished fourth in Region 7-AAA (19:57), sixth at the county meet (20:58) and 41st at state (20:19.37).

Anna TankersleyHouston junior

Houston was the top Shelby County girls team at the AAA state meet, taking third place. And Tankersley’s efforts were key as she came in 28th in a time of 20:01.43. Earlier, she was second in the Region 8-AAA meet (20:08).

Chloe WillisWhite Station junior

An all-metro performer in 2015, Willis ran fifth in the Re-gion 8-AAA meet in 20:55. She then ran 20:28.49 at state, good for 51st place overall.

Thompson wins the award for the second straight year after guiding the Eagles to a 16-4-1 record and their second straight Division 2-A state championship.

ECS was the only Shelby County team to win state in 2016.

Kaitlin EcholsBriarcrest senior

A four-time all-metro selection, Echols was an indispensable part of the Saints defense, which recorded 13 shutouts in 2016. She’s a two-time all-state pick and starred on the Saints’ state title team in 2015.

Peyton MooreBriarcrest junior

Briarcrest finished 12-2-5 and advanced to the D2-AA semifinals in large part thanks to the efforts of Moore, who helped spark a defense that al-lowed just 10 goals all year. Moore has been a part of 25 shutouts in the last two seasons.

Paola EllisHouston senior

An injury cut Ellis’ season short but she was terrific before that, scor-ing 17 goals and assisting on seven others while leading Houston to a na-tional ranking. She is a past two-time player of the year finalist.

Katrina OstromHouston senior

A USA Today all-Amer-ican defender, Ostrom anchored a backline that conceded just five goals in 2016 and four the previous year. The Mustangs won two AAA state titles and were also runner-up once in Ostrom’s four years on the varsity.

Jenna KempHouston sophomore

Kemp helped the Mus-tangs to an 18-1-2 record and a spot in the AAA state semi-finals. She scored nine goals while earning all-state and all-south region accolades.

Ashton ShieldsArlington junior

Regarded by many as one of the best goalkeep-ers in the state, Shields recorded nine shutouts in 2016 while leading the Tigers to a 15-6-3 mark and a spot in the AAA sectionals.

Molly MartinECS senior

Martin, a player of the year finalist last year, fired in the goals that sparked the Eagles to their second straight Di-vision 2-A state title, scoring 21 times and assisting on 15 others. She also played in goal during key parts of the year and even saved a penalty.

Graham SippelECS senior

A talented defensive midfielder, Sippel lent plenty of grit and grind to an Eagles team that finished 16-4-1 and won its second straight D2-A state title. In addition to her defensive duties, she also had a goal and as-sisted on two others.

Callie AndertonBriarcrest senior

Last year’s player of the year honoree closed out her career by leading the Saints to the Division 2-AA state championship. She finished first on the state’s all-time assists chart with 4,865 and fourth in career aces (440) while recording 1,197 assists and 97 aces as a senior.

Carmen FreemanSt. Mary’s senior

A player of the year fi-nalist as a junior, Freeman was terrific once again for the Turkeys. She ended the season with 379 kills, a .372 hitting percent-age, 241 receptions and 263 digs.

KaLea DavisHouston junior

Davis earned a host of honors after leading the Mustangs to the AAA state tournament. She was the region MVP, was named all-state and was also a member of the all-state tour-nament team while racking up 1,047 assists.

Carsyn StarrBriarcrest sophomore

Starr recorded 108 blocks and 238 kills while sporting a hitting percentage of .362. Her efforts helped Briarcrest to a state championship in Division 2-AA and a 46-3 overall record. The Saints didn’t drop a set against Shelby County competition.

Lauren DeatonHarding junior

Deaton led the Lions to a 41-9 record in 2016, ending the year with a loss to Knoxville Webb in the Division 2-A championship game. She had an impressive 695 kills (.397 hitting percentage) to go along with 451 digs while earning all-metro honors for the second straight year.

Kendal StrandBriarcrest senior

Strand led the Saints in kills (424) and attack at-tempts (942) to go along with 325 digs and 62 aces. Her play helped Briarcrest to a 46-3 record, a Division 2-AA state championship and an undefeated mark against in-state competition.

Taylor FerranteHarding senior

Ferrante totaled an amazing 1,561 assists for the Lions, an average of almost 12 per set. Her play helped Harding finish 41-9 under first-year coach Michael Sansone.

Alyiah WellsBriarcrest sophomore

The talented Wells had 19 kills in the state cham-pionship victory over Chattanooga Baylor and ended the season with 372 in total. She also led her team with 109 blocks and finished second in the state with a .518 hitting percentage.

VOLLEYBALL

One of the fastest and most explosive players in the state, Austin averaged 34.1 yards on punt returns and scored five times while averaging 38.9 yards on kickoff returns with two more scores. For the year, he averaged 149 all-purpose yards per game.

Bohanna had a terrific senior season as the Wolves advanced to the 6A semi-finals, losing only to state champ Whitehaven. The three-time all-state selection had 69 tackles, 23 for lost yards and 13 sacks.

Arguably the best receiver in the state of Mississippi, Smith caught 80 passes for 1,509 yards and 19 touch-downs while leading the Gators to their best season ever, a 10-5 finish and a trip to the MHSAA 5A North Half champion-ship game.

Mason starred for Trezevant’s back-to-back state championship team, leading a defense that ranked tops in Shelby County against the run (al-lowing 70.4 yards per game). He recorded 78 tackles with 19 sacks.

Gray was named Mr. Football in Division 2-A after leading the Lynx to an undefeated season and the first football title in school history. He ran for 2,215 yards (averaging nearly 10 per carry) and 38 touchdowns while total-ing 42 touchdowns in total.

The linchpin of MUS’ terrific defense, Hopkins recorded 98 tackles with 16 tackles-for-loss as the Owls went 10-1. For his efforts, he was named Division 2-AA Mr. Football.

Taylor was a Mr. Football semifinalist in 4A, running for 1,485 yards and scor-ing 22 touchdowns. Behind the play of the University of Memphis commit, the Mustangs won the 4A state championship and finished the season with a 13-2 record.

The third Shelby County player to win Mr. Football on defense, Miller took the 6A honors after leading the Tigers to a 15-0 record and the state title. He amassed 147 tackles, 21 for lost yards, seven sacks and four interceptions (two for touchdowns).

The Division 2-A Mr. Football runner-up, Hayden closed his high school career by running for 1,881 yards and scoring 25 touchdowns as the Gryphons advanced to the state semifinals. He was a player of the year finalist last year.

Hopper was named Mr. Football in 5A after leading the Warriors to a 10-2 record and the second round of the playoffs. He recorded 58 tackles (18 for lost yardage) with nine quarterback sacks.

Watkins was the offen-sive catalyst as Whitehaven rolled to a 15-0 season and its second state champi-onship in 6A. He ran for 2,175 yards and scored 32 touchdowns while finishing second in the Mr. Football voting.

Thanks to Newberry, Ridgeway’s secondary was a no-fly zone in 2016. The all-state defensive back intercepted 11 passes, tying the Shelby County record for most picks in a single season.

Richardson won Mr. Foot-ball honors in Class 2A after running for 1,761 yards and scoring 12 touchdowns. His efforts helped the Bears win their second straight state championship, defeating Marion County, 42-20, in the final.

A rock on the defensive line for the 4A state cham-pion Mustangs, Jefferson anchored a unit that finished 12th in the area in total defense.

An excellent run-pass threat, Wilcke quarterbacked the Tigers to a 9-4 record, throwing for 1,667 yards and 20 touchdowns (against just three interceptions) while running for 1,438 yards and 20 more scores.

Rule recorded 147 tackles with 6.5 sacks and eight quarterback hurries as the surprising Gators advanced to the MHSAA 5A North Half title game and finished 10-5.
