CHAIRMAN’S REPORTWith the 2012 golf season now well underway I can report the opera-tional side of GolfWA is in full swing. Our professional and dedicated staff appears to relish in their enormous individual workloads and continues to provide outstanding service to the game. We also extend appreciation to our hearty band of volunteers in so many capacities, those who

have remained in office and those who have joined us for the first time in 2012. Welcome aboard, we trust your time with GolfWA and management of the game at a State level is enjoyable and productive. Interstate Teams SeriesThe interstate teams’ series for Girls, Boys, Women and Men have now all been completed for 2012. The Girls’ and Boys’ series were both played in Queensland and provided our representatives with an excellent experience and exposure to competition at a National level. The Girls finished runners up which was a great effort considering the absence of Min Jee Lee with injury whilst the Boys finished 5th but gained some learning curve experience that will auger well for com-ing years. The Women’s and Men’s series were both played in South Australia with mixed results. The Women won their series and retained the Gladys Hays Trophy they won in Perth in 2011. The Men finished last in a tight, keenly fought series won by NSW (who WA defeated during the round robin matches). John Hopkins was a noticeable participant in the final of the women’s series between WA and Victoria. Having been tied up in meetings and forums all week in his capacity of Chairman of Golf Australia, with other commitments cleared he caddied for Whitney Harvey in the concluding stages to help her to a satisfying victory in her match. Not finished with yet, John then doubled back and caddied the final few holes for Alyssa Keir to ensure her match resulted in a win for WA as well. Well done and thank you John Hopkins. WA Junior Golf FoundationThe establishment of WAJGF is now complete and its Board of Trustees has been appointed with two representatives from GolfWA and two from the PGA. The trust deed also allows for the appointment of independent trustees to bring additional skills, experience and contacts into the foundation. The WAJGF will operate differently to its predecessor the Graham Marsh Junior Golf Foundation. It will not present an annual program of development activities and events; these

are now included in the programs of GolfWA. The main thrust of the WAJGF will be as a fund raising entity, linking the promotion of golf to youth with the corporate sector. GolfWA and the PGA are both enthusiastic about the restructure of the foundation and its potential as a major in-fluence in the future of the game in Western Australia. There is still much to do to finalise all the aspects of the Foundation and it is anticipated that a formal launch will be conducted in a few months’ time. Brad WhiteBrad has decided to further his career in the private sector after ten years as General Manager of Cottesloe Golf Club. During his time at Cottesloe the Club has gone from strength to strength in all respects including course redevelopment and presentation, membership and overall status. He also made significant contributions to Golf Management Australia serving as President of both Western Australia and Australia. Also worthy of note is his significant contribution to re-estab-lishment of the Western Australian Open as a major event on the Australian calendar for amateur and professional players. Well done Brad White, golf in Western Australia is in bet-ter shape for your contribution over the past decade. We wish you well in your future career. PGABrad’s position at Cottesloe has been filled by Troy O’Hern who has been the Executive Officer of the PGA (WA/NT Divi-sion) for the past 5 years. In this capacity Troy has also made a significant contribution to Western Australian golf, princi-pally through the ongoing development of the local pro-am circuit that is now well supported by golf clubs, metropolitan and regional. The WA PGA Championship and WA open events have also prospered during Troy’s tenure through his strong commitment to their combined success. The Annual Golf Industry Dinner is another of Troy’s initiatives supported by all sectors of the industry including GolfWA, the PGA, Golf Management Australia and the Course Superintendents’ Association. The three dinners held to date have attracted attendances in excess of five hundred. Troy will be a hard person to replace at the PGA, but his significant contribution is recognised and he will continue to serve the game in his new role at Cottesloe Golf Club.

GOSS AND ELLIOT ROMP TO VICTORY AT STATE AMATEUR

Perfect conditions on the opening day saw Royal Perth Pen-nant player Peter Bennett fire a brilliant 6-under par 66 for a 4 shot lead over Goss (Royal Fremantle) and Peake (Lakelands). Conditions on 2nd day were tougher with Goss following up an opening 2-under par 70 with a 3-under par 69 for a 5-un-der par total. Brady Watt had the equal best round of the day with a 4-under par 68 which left him with at 5-under par total and a playoff with Goss for Medallist honours.

After pars at the first two playoff holes (10 and 18), Goss won on the 3rd playoff hole (1st) with a par 4 to claim the Sir Charles Gardiner trophy from Watt. A shot back, 2011 Paxton Average winner Michael Dennis finished 3rd after rounds of 72 and 68 for a 4-under par total. Overnight leader Bennett, finished 5th with rounds of 66 and 79 for a 1-over par total whilst a five-way playoff was needed to determine the final 3 match play spots.

The opening rounds of the match play produced few up-sets with Medallist Goss (Royal Fremantle), Peake (Lakelands), Luck (Cottesloe) and Watt (Royal Perth) winning their opening two matches.

Goss made light work of Anthony Quale 5&3 and then Ben Rogers 6&5 whilst Watt won 2&1 against Ben Sheehan (Man-durah) and Jake Mcleod 5&4.

In the semi finals, number 1 qualifier Goss faced a tough match against Ryan Peake whilst Brady Watt faced State Jun-ior Champion Curtis Luck. Goss won what he later admitted was a tough match 4&2 against Peake whilst a few late birdies by Watt ensured that he prevailed over Luck 3&2.

ROYAL FREMANTLE GOLF CLUB’S OLIVER GOSS AND VICTORIAN BREANNA ELLIOT WON THE FIRST JOINTLY HELD MEN’S AND WOMEN’S WESTERN AUSTRALIAN AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP AT MT LAWLEY GOLF CLUB. GOSS WON A HARD FOUGHT 36 HOLE FINAL AGAINST ROYAL PERTH’S BRADY WATT 1 UP WHILST ELLIOT WON THE WOMEN’S FINAL 4&3 AGAINST FELLOW VICTORIAN AND GOOD FRIEND GRACE LENNON.

The final was closely fought going all the way to the 36th hole. The morning 18 holes were fairly even with the match going to lunch at all square.

Watt came out in the afternoon fired up winning the 22nd, 23rd and 24th holes with long birdie putts to go ahead 3 up. Goss responded winning the 25th and 26th holes to stay in touch at 1 down heading into the final 9 holes.

A birdie 2 on the 33rd hole from Goss got the match back to square and after birdie 4’s from both players on the par 5 17th (35th hole) the match headed up the 18th all square. After both finding the fairway off the tee Goss hit first into the firm 18th green to find the back portion of the green some 35 foot away from the front pin. Watt responded knocking his approach into 15 feet pin high leaving himself with a tricky downhill birdie putt.

Goss putted first his 35 foot downhill left to right putt tracking perfectly for speed all the way into the hole. Watt’s 15ft birdie to send the match to a 37th hole narrowly missed and 17 year old Medallist Goss was crowned State Amateur Champion.

“I hadn’t made a putt all day and to finally make one when it mattered was a great feeling” Goss said after the match. “It was a tough pin placement, downwind into a firm green. I was just happy to hit the green and then to hole the putt was the icing on the cake.” “Brady played great all day and the match could of gone either way.”

Asked what the win meant for Goss playing in his first State Amateur Championship, “The win proves that I’ve got the ability to compete with the top amateurs in Australia even though there weren’t that many players from over east play-ing”. “Last week I played the Trans-Tasman Cup and just found something in my swing that carried over to this week.”

“Coming up I’ve got the Australian Junior Championship, the Junior Interstate Series and the Men’s Interstate Series and then there’s not much on for the next few months. Then I’m off to America for a month to play amateur tournaments and hopefully the US Amateur if I can qualify. I really want to do well there because straight after that I’ll be off to College in the US in August.”

“For the future, I just want to do really well at College when I go in August, get a good education, play some good college golf and then look to turn pro after that”.

Lennon who finished Runner-Up at last year’s Women’s State Amateur finished three ahead of Breanna Elliot (Victoria) and Whitney Harvey (Melville Glades) after both girls fired rounds of 1-over par 75 and even par 74’s for 1-over par total.

In form Australian Number 3 Whitney Hillier (Joondalup) finished fourth at 3-over par. A three way playoff was needed to determine the final two positions for the 16 women elimination Match Play.

The first few rounds of match play produced few upsets with Medallist Lennon (Victoria), Breanna Elliot (Victoria), Hillier (Joondalup) and local Mt Lawley member Hannah Green qualifying for the Semi Finals. 10th seed Green (Mt Lawley) produced the upset of the day making light work of 2nd seed Whitney Harvey (Melville Glades) 4&2. Whilst Hiller (Joon-dalup) faced a scare after going to extra holes in her round 1 match against local Mt Lawley member Claudia Pisano before prevailing at the 19th.

In the Semi Finals Lennon (Victoria) faced the in form Hillier (Joondalup) whilst Elliot (Victoria) came up against Mt Lawley’s Hannah Green. Lennon was pushed all the way by Hiller in a close match before prevailing 1 up whilst Elliot cruised to a 6&5 victory over Green.

The stage was set for the 36 hole final with good friends Grace Lennon and Breanna Elliot both from Victoria facing off. After a Lennon raced to a 2 up lead after 13 holes in the morn-ing session, the match turned with Elliot hitting the pin on the short par 4 16th to win the hole with a conceded eagle to get the match back to square.

Going to lunch 1 up (through 18 holes) Elliot caught fire in the afternoon to lead by 4 holes going into the final 9. She played steady golf all the way in to close out the match 4&3 and add the Western Australian Amateur title to her long list of achievements.

“It was hard playing against Grace as we’re quite good mates. We travel together, play at the same golf club so it was quite tough” Breanna said. “I played well yesterday against Hannah which I felt like carried over into how I played today. The course quite suits my game and I was able to cut the dog legs with some good driving to shorten a lot of the holes.”

“For the rest of the year, I’m trying to get my ranking better and build on the couple of good finishes I’ve had this year. I’m heading to the States in July and hopefully looking to improve

on making the match play at last year’s US Women’s Amateur.” “After that I’m going to try my hand at Stage 1 of LPGA Tour

School in September and depending on how I go, I’ll most likely play amateur golf for another year” Elliot said.

Elliot shot a final round 4-under par 70 to finish three better than Joondalup’s Whitney Hillier and in the process claim her second victory in Western Australia this year after taking out the WA State Amateur Title only a few weeks earlier.

“I’m relieved!” Elliot said after the round. “I was ahead early but then struggled for a couple of holes and Whitney was playing very well so I was relieved to break away in the end”.

“I’m very thankful for the support I’ve received while play-ing here in WA. I’m starting to feel like a local,” Elliot added.

Joondalup’s Hillier finished strongly with rounds of 6-un-der 68 and 3-under 71 to finish second.

With strong and consistent performances this year from Hillier, she has been selected to represent Australia at the Queen Sirikit Cup in Singapore in late April.

“A weight has been taken off my shoulders” Hillier said. “I wanted to play well today not only to finish strong, but also to earn my spot on the Australian team going to Singapore”.

“I’ve also been working very hard over the past year in preparation for LPGA Q-School later this year” Hillier added.

Singapore’s Charlotte Thomas finished 3rd whilst Ellen Davies-Graham and Ashley Ona shared 4th. Whitney Harvey and Tatiana Wijaya were the next best West Australians finish-ing in a tie for 6th with State Amateur runner-up Victorian Grace Lennon.

Julienne Soo of Victoria and Lauren Hibbert of New South Wales rounded out the top 10.

RULES OF GOLFIn January, the USGA and R&A released the new Rules of Golf for 2012-2015 and one significant change was made to “Ball Moving After Ad-dress” (Rule 18-2b). Previously if a player addressed his or her golf ball and something caused the golf ball to move that was not the player’s fault (ie. a gust of wind) the player would be deemed to have moved the ball and would incur a one stroke penalty. The new amendment to the rule exonerates a player from penalty if his or her ball moves after it has been addressed when it is known or virtually certain that the player did not cause the ball to move. For example, if a gust of wind moved the ball after it had been addressed, under the new Rules of Golf, there is no penalty and the ball is played as it lies from its new position.

SMITH CLAIMS SA AMATEUR

Smith qualified 2nd for the 8 woman match play draw after rounds of 77 and 78 for a 155 total, 7 shots behind Medallist Caitlin Roberts of Royal Adelaide.

After a tight opening match which Smith won 1 up over Elysia Yap, she steam rolled Lorry Brown 5&3 to book her spot in the Final against fourteen year old Cassidy Evreniadis.

Teeing off after the Men’s Final, Evreniadis started confidently going 1 up through 9 holes. Smith responded by heading to lunch 2 up after the morn-ing 18 holes.

She extended her lead after lunch to lead 4 up

through 27 holes. Evrendiadis fought back to claim the 28th hole but Smith hit straight back taking the 29th hole before both players halved the 30th and 31st holes.

Evrendiadis won the 32nd hole and then scram-bled her way down the 34th to claim the hole with a bogey 6 to keep the contest alive.

However her luck ran out and Smith claimed the contest 3&1 on the par 4 17th to be crowned the South Australian Women’s Amateur Champion.

COURSE MANAGEMENT WITH CRAIG BISHOPWESTERN AUSTRALIAN GOLF CLUB - 9TH HOLE PAR 3, 176 METRES (INDEX 9)A wonderful golf hole, the par 3 9th at the Western Australian Golf Club provides the player with plenty of options to play the hole.

The green is a large two-tiered hook green sloping back to front which measures 176 metres from the back tee leaving a mid to long iron approach or a hybrid/fairway wood for a shorter hitter.

Bunkers surround the green with two deep bunkers short and left of the green and two bunkers protecting the right side of the green with water short of the green demanding a

carry of a 110 metres from the plates. With the pin cut back left on the top level there are a few

ways to play the hole. To make a safe easy par we can hit out to the front right portion of the green to leave a putt up the tier to try to make a two-putt par 3 or a bogey 4.

If we are feeling a bit more aggressive and perhaps need to make a birdie we can attack the pin with a draw which will bring the bunkers guarding the left side of the green into play.

For the higher handicap golfer I suggest hitting out to the right to the fat part of the green and trying to make a two

putt par up the tier. For the lower handicap golfer I would suggest adopting a

similar strategy to play the hole however if circumstances re-quire a birdie or if we you are feeling a bit more adventurous then attacking the pin would also be acceptable.

The picturesque par 3, 9th hole with the clubhouse in the background. A quick and sloping green makes holing putts a challenge at the 9th.

BUNKER LESSONS WITH CRAIG BISHOPMANY AMATEURS STRUGGLE WITH DISTANCE CONTROL OUT OF BUNKERS. ONE COMES OUT TOO CLEAN, THE NEXT ONE COMES OUT SHORT AND OVERALL THERE IS NO CONSISTENT SHOT PATTERN FROM THE SAND.

What this usually means is that the bottom of your swing is oc-curring in different places. Either too far behind the ball or too close to the ball which produces inconsistent bunker shots.

There is a good practice drill that you can do to get out of this pattern.

Simply grab a golf towel and place it on the ground in the middle of your stance. Make practice swings without touching the towel striking the sand in front of the towel (to the left).

Once you can do this consistently all of a sudden the bottom of your swing will start to appear in the same place up near the inside of your left foot.

Now, simply take the towel away and position the ball op-posite your left foot with an open clubface. Sweep the sand making contact with the sand in the same spot.

If you are striking the sand in the right place, the ball should come out high with some spin. Vary the length of swing for

distance control which should help you to improve your sand save percentage.
