Welcome to Student Employment Essentials! This online tutorial is for all students interested in student employment. The purpose of Student Employment Essentials is to provide students with the essential skills needed to succeed as a student employee.

Objectives
Work Study at WSSU is a form of financial aid where funding availability and FAFSA eligibility determines the recipients. Federal Work-Study provides part-time jobs for undergraduate students with financial need, allowing them toearn money to help pay educationexpenses.
The Federal Work Study Program
The program encourages community service work and work related to the recipient's course of study. The FAFSA serves as the application.
Student recipients are compensated once per month at a rate determined by the Financial Aid Office each year.

If there is not an offer of FWS, you must speak with your Financial Aid Counselor to learn if you are eligible.

Overview of the Student Employment Program• The student employment program

• There are 4 types of student employment: On-Campus Temporary Wage On Campus Work Study Off-campus Part Time Jobs Off-Campus Work Study/
Community Service Jobs
Temporary Wage vs. Work StudyTemporary Wage Jobs:• Are always on-campus or
within a WSSU office or department
• Posted by various departments in RamTRAK the online job board
• Never based on financial need• Not related to work study• Are NOT guaranteed to any
student• Open to any student enrolled
with the university**Students must be in good academic standing and meet satisfactory academic progress.
Work Study• Jobs may be on-campus or off-
campus • Positions will be posted by
departments and community service agencies in RamTRAK, the online job board
• Are based on Financial Need • AWARDED BY FINANCIAL
AID • Only open to students who have
been awarded work study
Off-Campus Work Study vs. Off-Campus Part-time
Off-Campus Work-Study• Is an extension of the FWS program.• Allows students to work at an off-
campus community based agency*• Positions will be posted by
community service agencies in RamTRAK, the online job board
• Is based on Financial Need as determined by the Financial Aid Office
• Is AWARDED BY FINANCIAL AID • Only open to students who have
been awarded work study
Off-Campus Part-Time• Also called Job Location and
Development Program (JLD) • Assist students in need of part time
employment by serving as a referral source.
• We can not “place” students in these positions. Employment is solely at the discretion of the employer
• Jobs are open to all students enrolled at the university
• Jobs are NOT need-based• Posted by local employers in
RamTRAK• Career Services nor WSSU can
guarantee employment with employers
How Do I Find A Job?
Follow these steps to find all student jobs! PLEASE NOTE:
• ALL WORK STUDY RECIPIENTS MUST HAVE A SECURED A JOB BY 9/15/2010• If you have NOT secured a position by 9/15/2010, your FWS Award will be canceled.
Process for Finding a Job….• Create an account in RamTRAK
www.wssu.edu/ramtrak If you already have an account and can’t remember your username, contact Career Services 336-750-3240
• Once an account is created in RAMTRAK you must: – UPLOAD your resume by going to the MY
ACCOUNT and MY DOCUMENTS section– SEARCH for positions – APPLY for positions online / or Contact the
department listed to schedule an interview
I HAVE A JOB – NOW WHAT?• PRINT YOUR HIRING AUTHORIZATION FORM AT THE END
OF THIS PRESENTATION• GIVE YOUR HIRING AUTHORIZATION FORM TO HIRING
MANAGER– HIRING MANAGER COMPLETES THE HIRING
AUTHORIZATION FORM, AND GIVES COMPLETED FORM TO STUDENT.
• PRINT I-9, NC-4, and W-4 employment forms. – Complete forms, and deliver to Human Resources with HIRING
AUTHORIZATION FORM. Note: MUST HAVE 2 FORMS OF ID (Driver’s License & Social Security Card are the most common)
– Human Resources is located in 109 Eller Hall • After completing forms, HR will initial the HIRING
AUTHORIZATION FORM and DELIVER to Financial Aid.
Your Responsibilities as a Student Employee
• Work the schedule as agreed upon by you and your supervisor
• Dress Appropriately as discussed by hiring department
• Maintain accurate timesheets• Adhere to office rules and policies• Maintain confidentiality • Refrain from socializing with
friends while on the job• Cell phone us is prohibited while
working
