Cecilia is a Bridgeport resident who competes in the Special Olympics Chicago program at McGuane Park. She currently competes in aquatics, basketball skills, bocce, bowling, floor hockey skills, gymnastics, snowshoe, soccer skills, softball skills, track and field, tennis skills, and volleyball. But, her favorite sport is basketball. Cecilia has been competing in the Special Olympics programs for over 23 years. “Watching her compete over the last 23 years, we have seen her win big and lose gracefully,” says Cecilia’s mother, Sue. “We have seen her stop running during a race to help a competitor who had fallen to get back up. We have seen her wrap her arms around a scared friend to encourage them to keep going when they felt like they couldn’t finish the race.” Cecilia was ecstatic when she recently earned a ribbon for the Rhythmic Gym- nastics Competition. She has been training hard for the biggest Special Olympics event of the year - Spring Games - which will be held at Eckersall Stadium May 7th- 9th. Cecilia will be competing in the standing long jump, 100m race, and a 4 X 100m team relay. She will also be competing in the Special Olympics bowling competition on May 31st. Cecilia lives with her father Armando and her mother Sue. She also has two sis- ters, Anna and Angie. Cecilia’s entire family loves her deeply and are so proud of her accomplishments. “When Cecilia was born, she had open heart surgery as an infant and we were told that she may not survive longer than six months,” says her parents, Sue & Armando. “Fast forward to her high school years - Cecilia was Prom Queen. And, four gener- ations of women in our family cried tears of joy as we watched her walk across the stage at her graduation.” “I will never forget the day we went to visit our new baby sister,” says Cecilia’s sisters Anna and Angie. “As we walked toward the hospital from the parking lot I re- member my eldest sister pointing and shouting “LOOK DADDY! A rainbow!” And my father said, “That's for your little sister because she is so special.” Cecilia is also a proud and loving “Auntie” of two nieces and one nephew. She loves any and all babies and has acquired an extensive ‘family’ of ‘adopted’ broth- ers and sisters, cousins and grandparents. Over the years she has crossed paths with many different people and everyone seems to fall in love with her! “You will never meet a more genuine and loving person than Miss Cecilia Jimenez,” says Cecilia’s parents. Cecilia has a number of hobbies, according to her sisters. “Cecilia will laugh with you, cry with you, and chew someone out for messing with you. She loves to ride her bike when weather permits (and sometimes when weather does not permit!). She swims with the grace of a prima ballerina and she has a hilarious sense of humor. She is certainly popular amongst her peers, loves to dance, sing and act silly (she plays out 3 Stooges skits with our dad!).” Cecilia loves competing in the Special Olympics program because, “It makes me happy and it’s a great time.” Her family believes the Special Olympics Chicago program has helped Cecilia tremendously and has helped to make her the wonderful person she is today. “I think the Special Olympics competitions and camaraderie has helped her grow as a person and as a friend,” says Anna. “I think she will compete until she no longer can. She and our family will definitely be lifetime supporters of this great program.” According to Cecilia’s coach, Kathleen McIntosh, Cecilia is a friend to all and is a great athlete in the program. “Cecilia is so very special in so many ways,” says Coach Kathleen. “She is loved by many people and touches the hearts of everyone she meets. She is loving, hard- working and never complains when it’s time to get down to practicing for Special Olympics. She cares more about her friends and peers than she does about winning and it shows in everything she accomplishes. I am so very proud of Cecilia and I am grateful to have her as a part of the McGuane Park team!” For more information on the Special Olympics Chicago program, to donate or to get involved, please visit www.sochicago.org Congratulations Cecilia on your success and continued hard work as an athlete of Special Olympic Chicago! The contest was called, “John Paul II: True Mis-sionary Saint" and it offered young people the oppor-tunity to learn more about John Paul and how he wasan example of missionary spirit.

Many students from Bridgeport Catholic Academyparticipated in the contest and submitted a variety ofcreative pieces. Two students were recognized for theirhard work and talent. Service Learning Program at Benton House

Attention Eighth Graders and High Schoolers! The new Service-Learning Pro-gram at Benton House combines hands-on education and community service to pro-mote civic responsibility among young people in the Bridgeport Neighborhood. Asyou enter high school and college you’ll find out that service learning is part of thecurriculum and in most high schools a required activity. Here at Benton House wehave been providing youth from all over the country for the last five years, so wethought would put together a structured program for the youth in our neck of thewoods. Starting in the next few weeks we’ll offer opportunities to participate inmany levels of service to the community, while learning about the benefits of thatcivic engagement and developing leadership skills that you will build on as youadvance towards a college degree. In every volunteer opportunity we provide aneducational component designed to enrich your experience.

Start now earning hours of service-learning credit towards high school or extra-curricular requirements, by helping Benton House feed the community throughdirect and in-direct service to over 2000 Bridgeport families.

Learn how our urban garden provides educational opportunities in agriculture andhealthy living, as well as providing produce to be distributed to deserving families.Engage senior citizens and serve them lunch or work on a community meal, concertor educational seminar.

Help us engage the community and teach our residents the importance of voting,or advocate for the return of the 31st Street bus. Maybe even combine your servicewith technology and learn how to donate a computer lab to another group in the city.

Many students have reported that their experiences in community service pro-vides rich material for college admissions essays, job and internship interviews andfuture academic assignments.

Although the program is open to all students from the summer of their eighthgrade graduation throughout college, space is limited to our capacity to provide ameaningful experience.

Our goal is to create leaders in civic engagement who in the future can carry onthis program as leaders in the community. We will be holding a registration andservice event on Thursday, May 15th at 5pm.

Learn about our program and help us set up the food pantry for Friday’s distribu-tion.To register, visit the Benton House web site under service learning.
