Good FridayJesus words from the cross

Page 2: Good Friday

The First Word

“Father forgive them, for they know not what they do”

Luke 23:34

Page 3: Good Friday

We have sinned…Moses then returned to the LORD and said, “These people have committed a terrible sin. They have made a god out of gold and worshiped it. Please forgive their sin…”

Exodus 32:31-32

Page 4: Good Friday

I have sinned…“I will arise and go to my father, and I will say to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son’.”

Luke 15:18-19

Page 5: Good Friday

My heart is troubled…

“The troubles of my heart are enlarged; bring me out of my distresses. Consider my affliction and my trouble, and forgive all my sins.”

Psalm 25:17-18

Page 6: Good Friday

So we pray…“Forgive us for doing wrong, as we forgive others. Keep us from being tempted and protect us from evil.”

Matthew 6:12-13

Page 7: Good Friday

God will forgive…“If my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.”

2 Chronicles 7:14

Page 8: Good Friday

He is faithful“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

1 John 1:9

Page 9: Good Friday

The Second Word

“Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise.”

Luke 23:43

Page 10: Good Friday

Jesus remember me…

“Do you not fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? And we indeed justly, for we are receiving the due reward of our deeds; but this man has done nothing wrong." And he said, "Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.”

Luke 23:40-42

Page 11: Good Friday

We sometimes forget…

“And the people of Israel did not remember the LORD their God, who had delivered them from the hand of all their enemies on every side…”

Judges 8:34

Page 12: Good Friday

But God chooses to forget…

“I will treat them with kindness, even though they are wicked. I will forget their sins.”

Hebrews 8:12

Page 13: Good Friday

And now we remember..

“And they remembered his words…”

Luke 24:8

Page 14: Good Friday

Because God has remembered us…

“Remember that you were at that time separated from Christ…having no hope and without God in the world. But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ.”

Ephesians 2:12-13

Page 15: Good Friday

…we have lifeHe who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. ‘To the one who conquers I will grant to eat of the tree of life, which is in the paradise of God.’

Revelation 2:7

The Third Word

“Woman, behold, your son!" “Behold, your mother!”

John 19:26-27

Page 17: Good Friday

Mary, mother of Jesus

“Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit.”

Matthew 1:18

Page 18: Good Friday

A sword will pierce your heart

“And Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, ‘Behold, this child is appointed for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign that is opposed (and a sword will pierce through your own soul also), so that thoughts from many hearts may be revealed’.”

Luke 2:34-35

Page 19: Good Friday

But treasure in your heart

And his mother treasured up all these things in her heart.

Luke 2:51

Page 20: Good Friday

Mary knew…

His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”

John 2:5

Page 21: Good Friday

Jesus knew“Honour your father and mother” (this is the first commandment with a promise), “that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land.”

Ephesians 6:2-3

Page 22: Good Friday

But he also knew…And he was told, ‘Your mother and your brothers are standing outside, desiring to see you.’ But he answered them, ‘My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and do it.’

Luke 8:19-21

Page 23: Good Friday

The Fourth WordJesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?"

Matthew 27:46

Page 24: Good Friday

An obedient son“And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.”

Philippians 2:8

Page 25: Good Friday

On the cross Jesus recalls a psalm

“I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint; my heart is like wax; it is melted within my breast; my strength is dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue sticks to my jaws; you lay me in the dust of death….

Page 26: Good Friday

For dogs encompass me; a company of evildoers encircles me; they have pierced my hands and feet-- I can count all my bones-- they stare and gloat over me; they divide my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots.”

Psalm 22:14-18

Page 27: Good Friday

What shall we say…

“And now, O our God, what shall we say after this? For we have forsaken your commandments…”

Ezra 9:10

Page 28: Good Friday

Not forsake but for our sake..

“For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.”

2 Corinthians 5:21

Page 29: Good Friday

So there is hope…

“For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.”

1 Corinthians 1:18

Page 30: Good Friday

The Fifth Word

“I thirst.”

John 19:28

Page 31: Good Friday

Salvation is thirsty work…

And he was very thirsty, and he called upon the LORD and said, "You have granted this great salvation by the hand of your servant, and shall I now die of thirst and fall into the hands of the uncircumcised?"

Judges 15:18

Page 32: Good Friday

God provides“You gave your good Spirit to instruct them and did not withhold your manna from their mouth and gave them water for their thirst.”

Nehemiah 9:20

Page 33: Good Friday

God answers“When the poor and needy seek water, and there is none, and their tongue is parched with thirst, I the LORD will answer them; I the God of Israel will not forsake them.”

Isaiah 41:17

Page 34: Good Friday

God satisfies

“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.”

Matthew 5:6

Page 35: Good Friday

So we come to Jesus

Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.”

John 6:35

Page 36: Good Friday

The Lamb leads us to water

“They shall hunger no more, neither thirst anymore; the sun shall not strike them, nor any scorching heat. For the Lamb in the midst of the throne will be their shepherd, and he will guide them to springs of living water, and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.”

Revelation 7:16-17

Page 37: Good Friday

And living water flows…

On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’”

John 7:37-38

Page 38: Good Friday

The Sixth Word

“It is finished”

John 19:30

Page 39: Good Friday

Jesus chose to lay his life down

“For this reason the Father loves me, because I lay down my life that I may take it up again. No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again.”

John 10:17-18

Page 40: Good Friday

Mission accomplished

“For I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure has come. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.”

2 Timothy 4:6-7

Page 41: Good Friday

Job done“He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high…”

Hebrews 1:3

Page 42: Good Friday

He sat down“But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God, waiting from that time until his enemies should be made a footstool for his feet. For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified.”

Hebrews 10:12-14

Page 43: Good Friday

Once for allFor the death he died he died to sin, once for all, but the life he lives he lives to God. So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.

Romans 6:10-11

Page 44: Good Friday

For all who believe“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.”

John 3:16-17

Page 45: Good Friday

There is freedom“There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death.”

Romans 8:1-2

Page 46: Good Friday

The Seventh Word

“Father, into your hands I commit my spirit!”

Luke 23:46

Page 47: Good Friday

Psalm 31

“Into your hand I commit my spirit; you have redeemed me, O LORD, faithful God.”

Psalm 31:5

Page 48: Good Friday

As for me

“As for me, I would seek God, and to God would I commit my cause”

Job 5:8

Page 49: Good Friday

God is trustworthy

“Commit your way to the LORD; trust in him, and he will act.”

Psalm 37:5

Page 50: Good Friday

So don’t be afraid“When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. But he laid his right hand on me, saying, "Fear not, I am the first and the last, and the living one. I died, and behold I am alive forevermore, and I have the keys of Death and Hades.”

Revelation 1:17-18

Page 51: Good Friday

Amen“Now to him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you blameless before the presence of his glory with great joy, to the only God, our Saviour, through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, dominion, and authority, before all time and now and forever. Amen.”

Jude 1:24-25
