The Good Friday Service

In reverence for the suffering our Savior experienced on our behalf, and in preparation for this worship service, please spend this time

in silent prayer and meditation.

The Prelude—Abide With Me .............................................................arr. Kurt Kaiser Were You There? ............................................................arr. Kurt Kaiser

The Meditation Hymn—Ah, Holy Jesus .............................................. Johann Crüger

Christine Crookall, cello

(† Indicates the congregation standing)

Ah, holy Jesus, how hast thou offended,That man to judge thee hath in hate pretended?By foes derided, by thine own rejected,O most afflicted.

Who was the guilty? Who brought this upon thee?Alas, my treason, Jesus, hath undone thee.’Twas I, Lord Jesus, I it was denied thee:I crucified thee.

Lo, the good Shepherd for the sheep is offered:The slave hath sinned, and the Son hath suffered:For man’s atonement, while he nothing heedeth,God intercedeth.

For me, kind Jesus, was thine incarnation,Thy mortal sorrow, and thy life’s oblation:Thy death of anguish and thy bitter passion,For my salvation.

Therefore, kind Jesus, since I cannot pay thee,I do adore thee, and will ever pray theeThink on thy pity and thy love unswerving,Not my deserving.

The Processional—The Old Rugged Cross.........................................George Bennard

The Chiming of the Hour

†The Call to Worship .................................................................. from Revelation 1:5-6To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood, and has made us to be a kingdom and priests to serve his God and Father,

To him be glory and power for ever and ever! Amen.

The Lord be with you.And with your spirit.Let us worship God!

On a hill far away stood an old rugged cross,The emblem of suffering and shame; And I love that old cross where the dearest and bestFor a world of lost sinners was slain. So I’ll cherish the old rugged cross,Till my trophies at last I lay down;I will cling to the old rugged cross,And exchange it some day for a crown!O that old rugged cross, so despised by the world,Has a wondrous attraction for me;For the dear Lamb of God left his glory aboveTo bear it to dark Calvary!Words & Music: George Bannard | Public Domain

†The Confession of Faith ..............The Belgic Confession (Adapted from Article XXI)We believe that Jesus Christ is ordained with an oath to be an everlasting High Priest and that he has presented himself in our behalf before the Father, to appease his wrath by his full satisfaction, by offering himself on the tree of the cross, and pouring out his precious blood to purge away our sins, as the prophets had foretold. He was led as a lamb to the slaughter, and numbered with the transgressors; and condemned by Pontius Pilate as a malefactor, though he had first declared him innocent. Therefore, he restored that which he took not away, and suffered, the righteous for the unrighteous, as well in his body as in his soul, feeling the terrible punishment which our sins had merited; insomuch that his sweat became as it were great drops of blood falling down upon the ground. He called out: My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? and has suffered all this for the remission of our sins.

§The Personal Confession of Sin (Please kneel if able to do so)

† Indicates the congregation standing. § Please kneel if able to do so.

Most Merciful Father, who by your great compassion toward us sinners, gave us the Lamb of God to take away the sins of the world, visit us with power from on high that we may more fully comprehend the sufferings of our Savior and the mercy that is ours through his death on the cross. As you have given yourself fully for us, may we give ourselves entirely to you. Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honor, and glory, and blessing. Amen.

†Invocation ..........................................................................................Rev. John Franks

The Offertory—Give Me Jesus .................................................... arr. Douglas Wagner

I heard a mourner say, “Give me Jesus!”You may have all this world, give me Jesus!O when I come to die, give me Jesus!Dark midnight was my cry, give me Jesus! In the morning when I rise, give me Jesus!

*The Offering (Please take a moment to sign the attendance register.)

*Online giving is available at firstpresaugusta.org.

Merciful Creator, Judge of all the earth and Father of all who trust in you; With heavy hearts, we acknowledge that it is our sin that made the crucifixion of your beloved son necessary. We confess that we have fallen short of your glory by our words, thoughts and actions. We have not and cannot live up to the demands of your holy law. All of us, like wayward sheep, have gone astray; we have turned from you and gone our own way. As a result, you have laid on Jesus all our sins. Forgive us for our rebellion, our hard hearts and our apathy toward our sin and toward our Savior. Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world, have mercy on us. Cleanse us with your blood, which you shed for us. Through Jesus Christ we pray. Amen.
