Write this down on your guided notes!• LEQ #3 How do variations

in air pressure cause different weather patterns to occur?

Page 3: Good Morning!

Quick Review!

• Air Pressure – The weight of the earth’s atmosphere pushing down on everything around it.

ATMOSPHERE

EARTH

Page 4: Good Morning!

Quick Review – Chemical Composition of the Atmosphere

• 78% Nitrogen

• 21% Oxygen

• 1% Argon & Carbon Dioxide

Page 5: Good Morning!

Quick Review

•Weather occurs in the TROPOSPHERE.

Page 6: Good Morning!

So what is all this pressure business?

• Soda can demonstration

Page 7: Good Morning!

Conclusion WHY did this happen?

• Water inside the can was heated, turned to water vapor (gas.) All of the pressure was forced out of the can.

• The pressure OUTSIDE the can was greater than the pressure INSIDE the can, causing it to implode.

Guided Notes - Pressure & Weather

• Air molecules are in constant motion and are affected by gravity. The force of this motion causes air pressure.

Guided Notes - Pressure & Weather

• High Pressure: Clear and dry conditions, usually sunny.

Guided Notes - Pressure & Weather

• Low Pressure: Causes storms, hurricanes and tornados.

Think, Pair, Share

•What type of weather system is over Charlotte today?

Guided Notes - Pressure & Weather

•When temperatures are HIGH, air pressure is usually LOW.

Warm air is usually LESS

dense than cool air.
