CHRIST HAMILTON UNITED LUTHERAN CHURCH
419 BOSSARDSVILLE ROAD STROUDSBURG PA 18360
I am writing this article in only my second week of being with
all of you as your Interim Pastor. What is striking to me is that the
theme of “transition” has shown itself to me in many ways ----
personally, in creation, and as I journey with you at CHULC.
Personally, I am going through a transition. After serving the
Church for 36 years as an active ELCA Pastor, I recently “retired”.
This is a new chapter in my life. I give thanks to God for where I
have served, and I look forward to where I will be led at this time
of my life. There are a lot of unknowns, but what I have learned in
my faith journey is to trust in God.
Creation is in transition all around me. As I drive back and
forth from my home outside of Wilkes-Barre, I marvel at the
changing colors of the leaves and fields along the way. The
landscape and foliage are changing from what was - to what is –
and towards the hope of what will be - through the seeds that
burrow into the ground.
Since I’ve been here, many of you have shared with me your
impressions of your faith community. It’s been conversations of
sadness and hope - of what was, and what can be. Through you I
have heard the echoes of the past mixed with the call towards for
future.
It is a time for all of us to remember, that as God remains
faithful to us, we are to remain faithful to God, and to one another.
I would like to share with you a seasonal reflection I came
across in a resource called SundaysandSeasons:
“As we move into autumn, let us allow the paradoxes of living
and dying, darkness and light, to just be. The two will conspire to
bring wholeness and health to every living thing. As we experience
living and dying, dying and living, our lives will be real and
colorful, fruitful and whole.”
Let us journey through these times of transition, and discover
together what blessings God has for us.
Together in Christ,
Pastor Peter Kuritz

the air is crisp and the smell of
fall is all around.
Christ Hamilton will be
holding its annual fall clean-up

It is a busy time of year and
everyone is working to get their
own yards in order for the long and chilly winter,
but we would really appreciate your helping hands!
Please bring gloves, rakes, leaf blowers,
pruners and whatever else you use to clean up
outdoors. There will be plenty of jobs and task for
everyone, so bring the whole family for a morning

Please see Dan or Wanda Courtright or Buddy
Stephani when you arrive to see where you can
help!
On November 11th, 2018 we will be honoring

Good News For Christ’s Disciples November, 2018
NEWS FROM GLORIA SAUCK
In September, I traveled with Dr. Paul
Gossman to visit Didi and Serafina Panzo in Boma,
a city on many hills next to the Congo River. The
trip there from Kinshasa was wild and a story of
its own! Besides Boma, we got to see other areas
where they work near there, in the still forested
parts of western Congo. Much of the country is
barren, where there used to be forests. The
highlight was definitely the choirs in church and
the strong presence of men in church!
I look forward to going again next year to work
with the local church in holding a few
eye/evangelism camps in the Boma area. Please
pray with the Panzos and me for God's provision to
make this all happen. God is expanding my
territory of ministry at a time in my life when I
was thinking of slowing down. He is a God of
surprises!
Donations to my ministry outreach are always
welcome. They can be received at:
World Mission Prayer League
232 Clifton Ave.
Minneapolis, MN 55403 USA
Checks can be made out to "WMPL" with a
designation written on the check memo line
saying "Sauck Ministry Fund".

Caroline Metzger, Jerry Kramer, Joyce Weishaupt and Amy Leap
ABSENT
Rob Provitera and Hope Porter
GUESTS
Debbie Lamson, Wanda Courtright, Dan Courtright, Pastor Peter
Kuritz and Ed Jones
Pastor Egebo opened his last council meeting by reading from “Gathered in His Name: Devotions and
Prayers for Christian Meetings” by James F. Klawiter. The reading was based on Romans 11: 13-21. He
closed devotions with a prayer.
Council members, the treasurer, recording secretary, and guests were introduced to Peter Kuritz, the
new interim pastor for the church.
Debbie Lamson: Debbie thanked the council for supporting Ark II and for giving the preschool a
second chance. She reported the 4 and 5-year- old class she teaches is filled with a total of 16 students,
the 3-year-old class now has 6 students and will soon have a 7th student enrolled. She is teaching the
students songs they will sing in church during the Veteran’s Day service in November.
Debbie also approached the council about the need to replace the playground’s mulch that has needed
to be replaced several times. She said there is a memorial fund of $1440 that was designated for the
playground and she would like to use the money to remove the mulch and replace with a rubberized
flooring. The total cost of the material replacement would cost $1850 and the remaining balance of $410
will come from donations Ark II received. Dan Courtright explained the material is made of recycled
rubber and will require less maintenance than mulch, and the rubberized flooring is a once and done
project. He feels it will end the problems in the play area. Brian Powers made a motion to release the
funds and John Field seconded the motion and the vote was unanimous.
Approval of Minutes: John Field made a correction in the spelling of his last name that appeared
in the security report paragraph, due to the letter s inadvertently added to his last name. John made a
motion to approve the minutes and was it was second and council approved the minutes by voice.
Treasurer’s Report: The report was sent to council members before the council meeting and the
council had no additional questions. Brian Powers made a motion to approve the report, Suzanne Sodl
seconded the motion and the council vote was unanimous.
Pastor’s Report: The report was submitted to council members before the meeting and council had
no additional questions. Pastor Egebo wanted to know how to coordinate returning the keys, curriculum
and items turned in on his last Sunday with the church. Linda Barnas suggested Amy, as the assistant
to the pastor, could work with pastor to accommodate a smooth transition.
OLD BUSINESS
Security Update: John spoke to the Pennsylvania State Police. The only question they asked was if
the church had experienced any break-ins. John expressed he wanted to talk with the new pastor before
making a report. Steve mentioned the ECLA now provides a link to information about church security.
Genealogy: It was brought up that Joel is still coming into the office and asking for materials to be
ordered and Victor said when Joel wants to order supplies or anything else, he must submit the request
to Steve or one of the council members.
Newsletter: Steve is going to send a flyer out to all the committees to look over and chose when they

would like to be in the committee corner of the newsletter.
Actionable items
Finance: Brian Powers asked council to take action to approve a
credit card for Amanda to replace the one Laura had. John made a
motion, Steve seconded the motion and it was approved by council.
Church directory: Discussion on not charging people for a copy of
the new church directory resulted in the decision that if only a small
number of people wanted a hard copy the church should cover the cost.
If it was more than a few people then maybe there should be a charge.
OLD BUSINESS
An issue with a scout parent resulted in a letter from an attorney to the church about the safety of
their child during scout meetings. The parent that started the problem is no longer with troop. It could
possibly mean that the church would no longer support the Boy Scouts. There was no decision at this
time.
Sandra informed the council the Call Committee has an interview with a new candidate.
A discussion took place on the parsonage and the readiness on a pastor moving in. Sandra reported
the place was livable and Brian Powers said it would just need some sprucing up.
Linda Barnas proposed that due to the lack of a Stewardship Committee, the council should step-up
and help with Consecration Sunday.
Since there is no dinner as in past years, council decided to host both coffee hours on Sunday Oct. 21
as well as to send a mailing with a letter and a pledge card and handing out pledge cards to members on
Consecration Sunday. The council volunteered to perform a skit for the message on Consecration
Sunday.

Good News For Christ’s Disciples November, 2018
And it shall come to pass that whoever calls on
the name of the Lord shall be saved. Acts 2:21
Iran is one of the world’s most restricted
counties. Bibles are brought out only after doors
are locked. Worship songs are sung with muted
voices. Group members stand watch near windows.
At the end of the meeting, members of the house
church stagger their departure to avoid drawing
attention.
One Iranian couple, Soro and Ali, returned to
Iran to share the gospel after living abroad for
several years. They knew what it could cost their
family. They knew anything could happen at any
time, but they felt the Lord had called not only
them but their kids as well. They trusted the Lord.
Their ministry began with gently witnessing to
family members. Persian culture places a high
value on family honor so it is relatively safe to
share the gospel within the family. Iranians will
most likely hide the conversion to save face in
society rather than report it to government
officials.
After a time, they expanded their ministry
beyond family and began to plant new house
churches. Baptisms occurred early in the morning
with only one or two believers as witnesses. After
asking standard questions about faith, Ali always
ended with this question: “Are you willing to give
up your life for Jesus?”
They became bolder feeling the country was
becoming more desperate for truth and they were
compelled to share the message of Jesus. Ali
travelled farther and into new neighborhoods to
meet new Christian converts. In 2009, when their
boys were 5 and 7, secret police burst into their
apartment and arrested Soro. As they led her to
the police van, Ali arrived home from a house
church meeting and was arrested as well.
In her cell, Soro found it hard to pray so she
reached out to God by singing. At first she sang
quietly and then the fear went away and she sang
louder. She said, “If they are listening to me, I am
going to sing about the God who I know--that He is
IRAN: LESSONS FROM
THE PERSECUTED
love, He is truth, He is faithful and He is good.”
After weeks in prison, they were released on
bail. They had been charged with disrupting
national security and apostasy form Islam.
Although they were constantly watched and faced
the possibility of re-imprisonment at the end of
their trial, they felt the Lord telling them to “help
the church learn to walk through persecution.”
At one court hearing the judge let Soro speak.
He told his secretary to sit and listen. Others came
in the courtroom and sat to hear her speak. She
spoke for 45 minutes explaining the Creation and
fall of man and the Old Testament stories. She
finished by describing Jesus as the sacrificial Lamb
of God and how he died on the cross for our sins
and rose from the dead. She ended by praying for
the judge.
After two more years of working with Iranian
believers, and not knowing when they might be
sent to prison again, they decided it was time to
leave the country. Today they live outside of Iran
and train leaders to plant churches throughout
Iran.

Martyrs newsletter. VOM is committed to
equipping and inspiring American Christians to
pray regularly for persecuted families. Please pray

families in restricted countries.
