EditorialWriting the contents of this issue has been a joy! It’s amazing what a little exploring can find. In this issue we celebrate the year that was 2010 and the many of achievements of our past students.

As you will read, the stories being told all started with a dream; a vision; a goal. Some are just in their infancy, others are in full bloom and everywhere in-between.

I am so pleased that King’s was able to contribute to the lives of those fulfilling their dreams and at this time of year, I honour God the Father, who is the original dreamer.

Merry Christmas, Sarah Lindley (2006) - editor

From the PrincipalRees Davis At King’s, our purpose and goal is to raise up Christian leaders - a generation of young people who are prepared for the future as ‘doers’, rising up to take their place in society and, because of their character, their voice will be heard and respected. Leadership is always about who you are, wherever you are, rather than the position you hold. As we move into the next decade, let’s remember to be the men and women of God that we are called to be - that our ‘being’ saturates our ‘doing’.

God bless you and I pray that you enjoy a wonderful Christmas and an exciting new year!”

Student Profiles

Eliza-Jane DohertyClass of 2009 Eliza-Jane Doherty is not a typical 19 year old musician. While others are striving for fame and success, Eliza describes herself as Mother Teresa did, “a little pencil in the hand of a writing God.”. It is this humility and gentle spirit that makes Eliza-Jane a delight...then she begins to sing.

Ever since the Queensland Conservatorium student picked up a guitar, she’s been hooked! “I love making music for anyone at any time,” she said. It is this desire that has ensured Eliza’s success. Eliza draws her inspiration from God and sees her gift as a platform to challenge, uplift and bless those who hear.

Eliza credits King’s for helping nurture her passion. “I was in an environment where my growth and development as a musician was being encouraged and that was really important,” she said.

Eliza’s joy and love for life is infectious and the music she writes reflects this. She isn’t one to turn down a gig at a birthday party or the opportunity to busk the afternoon away.

The singer/ songwriter plans to have a couple of albums against her name by the time she graduates.

If you would like Eliza to perform at your next event, e-mail [email protected]. Alternatetively, check out Eliza-Jane Doherty at youtube.com

Renee Sanson nee’ ClarkClass of 2001Inspired by the little people in her world, Renee began to create clothing for infants and small children. This led to the founding of the Ninja Cupcake Collection in 2009 straight from her sewing machine.

What started as a project for a stay-at-home mum, has now grown into a successful small business for little ninjas and cupcakes. She has been running the Collection for over a year and is completely content with its success. “It has given me enough to do and earn so I am satisfied.”

Renee plans for Ninja Cupcake- Collection to be part of her world for many years to come.

Danah Marks

Danah MarksClass of 2005 When Danah left university and packed her bags for Europe at age 19, her hope was not to have a back up plan. Three years later she is modelling full time, is the face of insurance company Aami and has just returned from filming a Bollywood movie in South Africa.

She is bold, creative, has a strong Christian faith and is very goal orientated- a trait instilled in her by her father. “Dad has always quoted Proverbs 6:2 ‘A man without vision shall perrish.’”

In a world of competition, where up to 300 hopefuls can turn up for one casting, Danah presents more than just her looks. “ I now try to bring my personality and character to a casting becuase there will always be someone taller, skinnier and prettier than you...I also pray A LOT!”

Danah has learnt to carry herself well in the often challenging and demanding industry. “I have boundaries and lines I don’t cross. It was really hard in the beginning but I know who I am and what I stand for so it’s just a part of me now.”

Danah also embraces the dramatic side of modelling, “You have to take on a role in front of the camera and I love hamming it up.” The Bollywood film, which she will finish shooting in India in January, has expanded Danah’s vision. “Doing this movie has opened up another passion in directing, writing and even acting.”

King’s provided a platform for Danah to feel free to be herself. “I didn’t have to hide the most important part of my life and that has followed me through in all things,” she explains, “I don’t shout ‘I’m a Christian’ from a mountain top but have learnt I don’t have to hide it to be accepted either.”

It has been God, her family and a hand full of friends who have supported her in this career path while others didn’t take her seriously. “Without their support I don’t think I could proudly say ‘Yep, I’m a model and that’s my career path at the moment.’”

Tim OswaldClass of 2003 When Tim began his second degree in Aerospace Avionics Engineering he didn’t realise all paths would lead him home (literally) and to his first love of Information Technology. The computer whiz, who was working for a military contractor started Digistorm in mid-2010 when his computer programming demands could no longer be met during his lunch break.

The latest project Tim’s been working on is iPhone development. “There are plenty of web developers out there but only a few good iPhone developers so the demand for that service is high in Australia right now.” he said.

Both King’s and his parents taught him to be honest, trustworthy, motivated and persistent. “All of these are vital in running a professional business,” he said adding, “When I have kids, they will go to King’s.”

Tim’s long term goal is to employ a small number of programmers and designers, and offer two primary services; web development and mobile development.

King’s Launches iPhone AppIn what we believe is a first for Australian schools, King’s has launched an iPhone app. The app is designed to inform and remind parents about the information they need to know.

It contains a ‘calendar’ section and a separate ‘notices’ section for high school, primary, and Noah’s Ark. These are updated daily, so the app will always contain the very latest information.

You can download the app from the iTunes store for free. (From the app store, search for ‘kcc’ or ‘Kings Christian College.’) If you have an iPhone, please download the app and give us some feedback - there is a section inside the app where you can do this. Also, rating the app on the iTunes store will help promote the app.
