ongoing effects of the 1998 Asian Financial Crisis, as well as Asian and

world news which also contains information about recent developments

among the global Overseas Chinese community. 

This site seeks to improve public understanding and awareness of East Asia

by attempting to provide a balanced mix of links highlighting differing

Chinese Government Links:

The Embassy of the People's Republic of China in Washington D.C. and

information about visas and entry requirements into China.

The Permanent Mission of the People's Republic of China to the U.N. isonline, providing information on press-releases, resolutions and speeches.

China's Foreign Ministry is online, providing statements on foreign policy,

press releases and scheduled diplomatic events.

The U.S. State Department China Homepage has been established, with

up-to-date information regarding American foreign policy.

The China Trade Relations working group is a U.S. government

organization which examines issues and policies regarding trade with

China.

The U.S. Embassy in China has also established a homepage.

Chinese law explained is a useful site providing an introduction to a

number of legal issues within the PRC.

 Analyses of political and economic conditions in China are available from

Political and Economic Risk Consultancy, Ltd in Hong Kong. Other 

background papers on China are also stored on this site.

The Constitution of the People's Republic of China was adopted in 1982,

and amended in 1988 and 1993.

China Political Reference Almanac provides a short description of the most

important government structures and political offices.

Online Newspapers, Magazines and Broadcasting:

The Beijing-sponsored news agency China News Service can be accessed

through the Internet. To read these dispatches, you need to register a

password first. Only dispatches filed more than a week ago can be viewed

without paying a subscription fee. China News Service's dispatches are

also available in Chinese, as are those of the affiliated Hong Kong China

News Agency. These sites include archives of dispatches dating back

several weeks.

China Daily, the national English Language newspaper is available online.

 Articles from the official weekly Beijing Review from January 1996 up to the

edition published about a month ago are available online.

Inside China Today offers daily news for China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and

Macau, and includes a travel section and cultural/historical resources. It

also includes a brief background on China's most pressing issues.

Feng Hua Yuan (Maple Garden) -- A biweekly, Canada-based

Chinese-language magazine with news, culture, entertainment and links

sections.

Lateline Interactive provides an excellent variety of daily news. It also

includes information about travel, Chinese sports and games, and a

searchable database of Chinese celebrities.

The People's Daily is now online, including an archive going back several

weeks. Among other news sources sources at this site are the People's

Daily Overseas Edition and the Shichang Bao, an economic newspaper 

produced by the People's Daily.

There is also a comprehensive list of links to Chinese news organizations 

from the U.S.-based Aweto Company.

The Canton Daily (Guangzhou Ribao) is available. Some of its articles are

provided in English.

China News Digest's home page provides links to CND's electronic publications.

These are:

y  Hua Xia Wen Zhai -- a weekly Chinese-language journal containing, among

other things, comment on and analysis of Chinese current affairs. An

indexed archive of Hua Xia Wen Zhai dating back to the inaugural issue of 

 April 1991 can be found at the same site. You can also perform a keyword

search of past issues thanks to the Information Technology Institute of 

Singapore.

o  CND-Global -- an English-language bulletin issued every other day

containing articles about Chinese current affairs from the Western

and Chinese press. Back issues from March 1989 to the present

are available on CND's FTP server . Issues from September 1993 to

the present can be viewed directly here. You can perform a

keyword search of past issues. CND-Global is distributed free of 

charge by E-mail. Until 1995, CND-Global received CND Books

and Journals which contained news and reviews related to Chinese

arts, literature and society. Another archive of this supplement can

o  China Daily and CB Net -- Well-packaged daily updates from China

Daily and China Business Weekly. Need a subscription for most of 

the information, but two weeks is free.

Some of China Daily's science and culture stories from several months ago

are available from Beijing.

Window on China provides a diverse number of links to a variety of general

information sources about both Mainland China as well as Taiwan.

The search engine Yutopian.com was established specifically to provide

links to Chinese-cultural sites.

Several Hong Kong newspapers are available online. See Section 2.

Shanghai on the Internet is a site dedicated to commerce, import and

export and real estate in Shanghai, a general introduction to the city.

Shanghai's Liberation Daily (Jiefang Ribao) is online in Chinese, as is the

Xinmin Evening News. 

Shanghai Today, a monthly journal published by the Shanghai government,

is also available.

The bi-weekly Chinese-language magazine Feng Hua Yuan contains news

summaries and comment on current affairs.

China and the World is a scholarly e-magazine and information database

about social and political issues in contemporary China.

China 2000 is a monthly, Washington-based newsletter on U.S.-China

relations. It includes articles written by notable Chinese officials and

academics about a variety of current topics.

China Informed is an online database containing current articles about

China topics.

Business and Economic Online Information Sources:

The Far Eastern Economic Review's stories on China are available. See

Independant Federation of Chinese Scholars and Students in the U.S. is

an organization of scholars and students of Chinese descent. This

organization is dedicated to human rights issues in China.

 Amnesty International is a leading international watchdog organization

dedicated to protection of basic human rights and has provided a page

specifically for China's Human Rights Issues.

Human Rights in China (HRIC). An organization founded by Chinese

scholars and scientists in March 1989. The organization's bulletins are

often posted to the newsgroups talk.politics.china and soc.culture.china.

Human Rights Watch provides news releases about human rights issues

around the world. There are sections devoted to human rights in China and

Tibet.

The New York-based Chinese-language monthly magazine Beijing Spring 

has articles on political and human rights issues. It is published in New

York by prominent rights activists, including astrophysicist Fang Lizhi and

popular journalist Liu Binyan. The same site contains Chinese-language

archives of the journal China Spring.

Laogai Research Organization is a non-profit group which pursues

research about prison labor inside China.

China Labour Bulletin provides information about organized labor activism

inside China.

Minority Nationalities:

Links about Tibet and Xinjiang can be found in Section 4.

For a VERY detailed overview of China's various minority nationalities and

their languages presented by SIL International can be found at The

Ethnologue 13th Edition Catalog of Languages.

In addition, a wonderful Survey of China's Minority Nationalities and

Nationalities Policy presented by Le Centre Internationale de Reserche en

 Améngagement Linguistique of the Université Laval in Canada 

Disputed Territories:

For an introduction to China's disputed territories, the CIA has provided a

brief summary.

The E-conflict World Encyclopedia has an overview of the Spratly Islands 

dispute, as well as the Paracel Islands dispute.

The Paracels Forum has an ongoing forum and collection of incidents

relating to border disputes in the South China Sea. Including construction

of structures on disputed reefs, and the international law issues involved.

The Border Dispute Consultancy provides background information on the

Indo-Sino dispute over the territories of  Aksai Chin and Arunchal Pradesh.

This Diaoyutai Island fact sheet provides information detailing the ongoing

Diaoyutai Islands disputes. (Please keep in mind that this web site reflects

Environment, Health, Education and China's Space Program:

Environment:

China is presently experiencing extremely serious environmental problems.

The homepage for China's National Environmental Protection Agency is

online. (Requires Chinese character format)

The World Bank has made available a database of China pollution

indicators and status. It contains summary information about pollution,

pollution impact, and environmental conditions in China.

China Environment is presented by the World Resources Institute to

provide an overview of China's environmental issues.

For information about the Three Gorges Dam project, the world's largest (and

most controversial) water-control project, you can check-out the following

websites:

y  The International Rivers Network has organized an information campaign to

oppose the project from an environmental standpoint. There is an

introduction to the environmental and social issues surrounding the project,

in addition to a mailing-list.

y  Sanxia.org is a Hong Kong based organization about issues surrounding

the Three Gorges Project. (In Chinese and English. Lately, this site has not

been accessible.)

y  You can get official information about this project from the Embassy of the

Health:

China Information Service System on Traditional Chinese Medicine and

the Traditional Chinese Medicine Window provides information and links

about such forms of traditional medicine as acupuncture and moxibustion.

Chinese Medical News provides free, timely medical and pharmaceutical

information, released twice monthly.

Education:

China's leading University, Peking University (also known as BeiDa) is

online.

China's primary University of science and technology and first

Internet-equipped institution is at: Tsinghua University.

 Also, check-out other major Chinese Universities such as Fudan University 

in Shanghai, or Zhongshan (Sun Yat-Sen) University in Guangzhou and

Nanjing University in Nanjing.

The China Education and Research Network is the gateway to the main

academic computer network in China. From here, you can get to any

Chinese universities on the internet. Or for an easier way around China's

academic centers, look at Academic WWW In China.

Worldwide Classroom provides links to China's schools on the net.

China's Space Program:

China's National Space Administration is online. It is the agency which

provides planning and management of China's space-related industry and

reasearch. (May be slow to load.)

Mark Wade's Encyclopedia Astronautica provides a great overview of the

Chinese Space Program.

The Space Policy Project at the Federation of American Scientists has

created a brief introduction to the Chinese space program.

Dragon Space is a website reporting on recent events in the Chinese

space program.

Other:

Should a major breaking news story occur in China, you could try

connecting to one of the Internet Relay Chat (IRC) groups to exchange

views and information in a real time basis. This IRC channel would be

called #china. Hunt around, but there could well be others or even a

purpose-created channel for the given topic. Consult the IRC FAQ for 

details of how to connect to the service.

Newsgroups:

For those whose news servers provide it, the newsgroup

CNN's Hong Kong Transition Page provides ongoing news pertaining to

the 1997 Hong Kong transition, historical multimedia archives and pressing

post-transitional issues.

The South China Morning Post has also established a web page with the

latest information following the Hong Kong Transition and a site putting the

1997 Transition in Historical Perspective.

The Hong Kong Transition Project has information concerning the analysis

of the transition period from 1984 to 1997 and aspects of the transition of 

Hong Kong from a British Colony to an SAR region of the People's

Republic of China.

Online Newspapers, Magazines and Broadcasting:

The South China Morning Post is one of the most comprehensive online

source of news, business information, jobs and entertainment in Hong

Kong in the English Language. The newspaper also has a daily

one-sentence summary of each of its main stories. There is also a

searchable archive of SCMP's articles online as well.

Ming Pao provides Hong Kong and China news in Chinese.

The Hong Kong Standard puts its main local stories, China news and

business news online. It also provides an archive of the last week's

editions of the newspaper.

The Beijing-controlled Ta Kung Pao is online.

Sing Tao Daily is available online in Chinese.

Hong Kong Government Sites:

The U.S. Consulate in Hong Kong has established a highly useful web site

with Hong Kong travel information.

There is a searchable archive of Hong Kong Legislative Council (Legco)

proceedings from October 1995 to the present. Legco papers can also be

searched here. A diary of Legco proceedings is also available.

Hong Kong Business- Vital Statistics is a highly useful site with official

information on Hong Kong's economic and social statistics.

Environment, Health, Education and Outer Space:

The Planning, Environment and Lands Bureau is the government body

overseeing environmental and environmental law issues in Hong Kong.

The Hong Kong Department of Health is the government body which

handles health care policies in the SAR.

The Hong Kong Medical Association brings together government,

London's Daily Telegraph and Dublin's Irish Times give free access to their 

main news stories. The Irish Times has a database of its stories going back

to September 1994. The Times of London is also available online.

 A condensed version of today's New York Times is available in PDF format.

International stories are on page two. You will need Adobe Acrobat Reader  

to view this.

For Washington's view of events, you can perform a keyword search of the

Department of State's daily press briefings. The archive goes back to

January 1993.
