What is an Information Commons?

A collaborative environment where library and IT resources

blend … where people meet and

collaborate … in a first-class showcase of IT tools and student products.


Status before Info Commons• 100 library public computers

– Web browser and CDs on LAN– Oldest library-owned PCs, some 6 years

• 200 ITS lab machines– 3 year replacement cycle – Full range of software


Historical Perspective

• LSU Flagship Agenda 2002

• Stdt Govt first coffee shop idea ‘04

• New CIO April, 2005


Strategic Visioning

• Flagship IT Strategy recommendation

– Make significant strides in increasing the accessibility of the LSU community to IT infrastructure and services

– Develop IT “commons” in high-traffic locations around campus


Previous Collaborations

• Statewide library network 1992

• Electronic classrooms 1996

• Computer labs 1997

• ADA equipment in reference room


Previous Support by STF

• Student Tech Fee (STF) labs 2002

• Software such as: ArcGis, AutoCAD, AutoDesk, Celestia, ChemDraw, Cygwin, FileZilla, Final Draft, FreeMat, Geomedia Pro, KaleidaGraph, Maple, MathCAD, Mathematica, MATLAB, etc.


Gear To Geaux

• In 2002 library circ staff began checking out wireless cards & laptops to students.

• Has been expanded to include digital & video cameras, tripods, “clickers,” etc.

• Makes use of library experience with checkout, billing
