Welcome to Good People of West Georgia, West Georgia’s newest community maga-zine, dedicated to giving God the glory and serving others. As the magazine grows may it be filled with helpful articles and information to encourage you, Good People of West Georgia. Thanks and God’s blessings to those that took a leap of faith and advertised this first issue and to all of you that are reading this message now. I know that a thankful at-titude opens windows of heaven through which spiritual blessings fall freely. I pray that you all come to know and experience God in ways that you never have before and that this Thanksgiving will be filled with the warmth of His love. May we as in Psalm 100: 4-5 “enter His gates with thanksgiving, And His courts with praise. Give thanks to Him; bless His name. For the Lord is good; His loving kindness is everlasting. This is a season of thanksgiving here in the USA. I have so many things to be thank-ful for. I’m so thankful for my family. There is nothing in the world like being a Dad. I’m thankful for my partner — my wife Tina. Together we are building a
heritage of faith for our kids.I know so many people who are on a different journey than I am. I pray often for
them that their faith will grow and develop, so that the road ahead gets clearer. My family has had a bumpy journey in the past two years. We were blessed with the addition of Lucas (Luke) Nevilio Hicks to our family in February 2011. He is a joy to love and learn from. He sees things so differently since He’s from another culture.
In December 2011, we were stunned to hear that my 20 year old son, Jeremy was diagnosed with cancer — germ cell tumor. He was living in San Diego, CA, at the time. Time stood still as I went immediately to be with him. The prognosis was four rounds of chemo and then surgery to remove the remains. It was a relatively short process that seemed like an eternity. I was reminded during that time that God is faithful. Our family was blown away and overwhelmed by the love and generosity of people from our community to help our family through this difficult time. I am blessed and thankful beyond words. Check out this Psalm of Praise…. 1 God, have mercy on us and bless us and show us your kindness 2 so the world will learn your ways, and all nations will learn that you can save.3 God, the people should praise you; all people should praise you. 4 The nations should be glad and sing because you judge people fairly. You
guide all the nations on earth. 5 God, the people should praise you; all people should praise you. 6 The land has given its crops. God, our God, blesses us. 7 God blesses us so people all over the earth will fear him. (Psalm 67:1-7 NCV)
I remember growing up as a kid and going to my grandma’s (Mammie) house. She was consistent in how she lived and what she believed. She would constantly remind me of the way God wanted me to live. She lived out her faith in front of me. My Mom was consistent with Mammie. Their faith was evident and didn’t waver.
I also saw the faith of my Dad, a leader in the church. I really believe that I was deeply influenced by my family to love the Lord. When I was in college I began wrestling with my faith and what I really believed. My faith became my own when I moved away on my own. I had to decide if I really believed in God or not. I cannot measure the influence of my family’s heritage of faith and the impact it had on me. I can tell you that I don’t think my faith would be as strong today if it weren’t for the influence of my family.
I wonder how I might help turn people to the Lord. I’m not bashful or secret about my faith. I would love for my friends and coworkers to know the joy and peace that comes from living a life of faith in God.
I’m so thankful for people who poured into my life to this point and the people that continue to pour into me. I want to pour into others out of deep gratitude for my God. I once was lost, but now I’m found. I’m so thankful for my faith that leads to salvation and the abundant life now and eternal life later. I now want to be faithful in living out my faith.
