Hessen

The State of Hessen has made optimal use of its cen-

tral location in the middle of Germany, and has built

up a transportation infrastructure that is unparalleled

in Europe.

Europe’s many strategic advantages start with

Frankfurt Airport. With about 2 million tons of cargo

and 53.5 million passengers a year, it is one of the

world’s leading intermodal transportation hubs,

located directly in the middle of Europe with excellent

connections worldwide. Every important destination

can be reached multiple times per day: over 317 fl ight

destinations in 105 countries, 4,600 direct global

connections a week, and a hub for 130 airlines. These

numbers result in Germany’s largest airport being

ranked in the top ten most important global airports

for freight turnover and passenger fl ights.

Frankfurt Airport is the only major airport with a long

distance train station providing direct connections

to the Intercity Express high-speed rail system and

the European Rapid Rail Transport system. Located in

the immediate vicinity of the airport is the crossroads

for all trans-European north-south and east-west

connections: the Autobahn interchange Frankfurt –

Germany’s most traveled stretch of the Autobahn.

Just as impressive are the statistics regarding

Frankfurt’s main railroad station. With 350,000

passengers per day, it is the largest train station on

the continent with the highest number of passengers.

From here, the Intercity Express trains can reach

most economic centers in Germany and Europe within

just a few hours.

The largest airport and the most frequented railroad

station in continental Europe – seamlessly integrated

air and rail connections - a central location at the

crossroads of the most important Autobahn connec-

tions in Germany: convincing reasons to choose the

business location Hessen.

HESSEN – GERMANY‘S MOST INTERNATIONAL ECONOMIC REGION

Hessen assumes a central position in Germany and Europe, both geogra-

phically and economically. It has the strongest economy of and the highest

labor productivity making it the leading German federal state with a gross

domestic product by workforce number of around 70,600 Euros. Hessen’s

economic heart beats in the Rhine Main area, where over 70 percent of

gross value creation is generated. The service sector constitutes the majo-

rity of this with over 75 percent. As a hub for transportation, a convention

location, and a fi nancial center, Frankfurt is one of the top ten leading

economic regions worldwide. Hessen is also a leading international eco-

nomic region, with a high quality of life. People from more than 190 nations

contribute to its cultural variety, cosmopolitan outlook, and vibrant day to

day living and shared activities in education, at work and at play.

In Hessen, the state in the heart of Germany, cosmopolitanism, culture and innovative strength come together. Many paths

converge here, making Hessen one of the strongest regions in Europe and a dynamic center for science, research, and

progressive economics, where more than six million people live and work. The Rhine Main area is a magnet for domestic and

foreign investors, who are attracted to the region’s advantageous economic prospects and conditions. Approximately 300

banks or their representatives are headquartered in the fi nancial and trading center Frankfurt am Main, Hessen’s largest city.

The German Central Bank (Deutsche Bundesbank) and the European Central Bank are also located here, as is the German

Stock Exchange (Deutsche Börse).

Hessen is located in the center of the European markets, which have enormous economic potential with a population of 500

million inhabitants and a gross domestic product of 1,533.5 billion Euros. The largest foreign investors are the Netherlands,

the USA, Switzerland, and Luxembourg making up almost 60 percent of the economic strength of the region.

Hessen is the number 1 location for more than 2,000 foreign companies, among them global players from China, Japan, Korea,

India and the USA.

Frankfurt International Airport – take off to the world: more than 300 destinations in more than 100 countries are serviced

by fl ight from this central logistical hub. Global connections are excellent: 130 airlines offer 4,600 weekly direct connections

around the globe, including 600 fl ights to Eastern Europe, 350 to North American and 250 to the Far East.

Variety also shapes Hessen’s cultural landscape. The four sites on the UNESCO World Heritage List bear witness to this,

as do renowned state theaters, over 300 museums, and historical gardens worth visiting. A particular highlight is the

documenta – the most important contemporary art exhibit in the world – which takes place every fi ve years in Kassel. For

a small operation or a major enterprise, a corporate headquarters or a subsidiary – hardly any other German state is more

popular or more desirable than Hessen. No wonder! Companies in Hessen have more profi t-creating advantages than other

regions in Germany. This brochure is designed to tell you about the main factors. Journey with us through the multifaceted

land of Hessen and get to know its unique qualities. Welcome to Hessen!

THE WORLD’S MEETING POINT

People who visit or live in Hessen feel at home with

its thriving international communities. In addition to

more than 224,000 citizens from the largest foreign

population groups USA, China, India, Japan and Korea,

people from over 190 nations feel at home in Hessen

and make the state one of the most multifaceted places

for exchange and cooperation – economically, socially

and culturally. Thus, the character of Hessen has long

been marked by welcoming others with open arms, by

helpfulness and friendliness.

The Hessians are famous for their hospitality and

make it easy for new arrivals to get in touch with

neighbors and fi nd their own place in the community.

All indications point toward Hessen being designated

“Germany‘s most international economic region“.

The fi nancial and trading center of Frankfurt is the best

proof of Hessen‘s global business connections.

More than 300 banks from more than 50 countries are

represented here, in one of Europe‘s leading fi nancial

centers, where the Deutsche Bundesbank and the Euro-

pean Central Bank make their homes. And the German

Stock Exchange ensures that the service center Frank-

furt ranks among the leading stock exchange locations in

the world.

Whether due to its economic signifi cance or its excellent

international infrastructure, whether due to the world’s

largest commodity futures exchange or the world-re-

nowned trade fairs – for many countries and companies,

Hessen is an outstanding gateway to Germany and Europe.

“Fraport, one of the world’s leading airport corporations, successfully owns and operates the international air traffi c hub Frankfurt Airport

with an eye towards the future. The airport creates opportunities for the Frankfurt/Rhine Main region, the State of Hessen as well as the

entire Federal Republic of Germany through its wide range of international fl ight connections and its continued development as Airport City,

providing a global exchange of expertise, cultures, and goods. By expanding its capacity, Frankfurt Airport will continue to be an important

future economic factor and job engine for the development of the region, of Hessen, and beyond.”

Hessen is also an attractive location for international

investors and their staff and families. They are welcome

as guests and really feel at home, because Hessen is

truly international. Events such as the Newcomers

Festival, geared towards new arrivals and international

employers and communities located in Hessen, offers

them support in feeling at home in their new environs.

The numerous international companies and their staff

and families attest to its global fl air, as does the high

attractiveness of Hessen as a travel destination. In

comparison to other German states, Hessen has a

higher than average proportion of international guests -

almost fi ve million overnight stays per year, and rising.

and their encompassing business and leisure activi-

ties providing both economic exchanges and cultural

enrichment for daily life. Hessen offers a wide choice of

international elementary and higher education schools.

In addition to the Chinese, French, Greek, Japanese, and

Korean schools, the state is also home to more than 20

international kindergartens.

Suitable school facilities rank very highly among the

priorities of foreign companies and their staff members.

In addition to the excellent transportation connections,

Hessen has a close-knit network of foreign trade asso-

ciations, embassies, consulates, business associations,

cultural institutes, clubs, restaurants and shops. All of

these make it easy for the many communities in Hessen

to feel at home.

· that Hessen is one of the most attractive locations in Germany for international investors? Foreign direct

investment in Hessen increased to 84.6 billion Euros in 2008.

· that the twelve largest foreign employers, among them GM/Opel, Sanofi -Aventis, Procter & Gamble, and

Ferrero, employ around 64,000 workers in Hessen?

· that Hessen is the leading location for international communities? A dense network of communities from

abroad exists here, with international schools and kindergartens, clubs, restaurants, and shops.

“Northern Hessen, located in the heart of Europe, can count many advantages in the international competition of economic regions. Among

these are a broad mix of businesses and industries, an excellent scientifi c landscape, well trained experts, intact natural surroundings

as well as rich cultural and tourist offerings. As an internationally active family fi rm, Viessmann is fi rmly anchored in this region with its

headquarters in the north Hessian Ederberg Region, and has always professed its belief in the area. This is currently demonstrated by

“Effi ciency Plus”, our sustainability project for climate protection, resource effi ciency and location safeguarding, where we have invested

220 million Euros.”

The State of Hessen and its partner regions inside and

outside of Europe have been united since 1976 by ac-

tive partnerships shaped by the desire to promote eco-

nomic, research, education, and cultural exchanges.

The State of Hessen maintains partnerships in Europe

with the following regions:

· Emilia-Romagna (Italy; since July 1992)

· Aquitaine (France; since November 1995)

· Jaroslawl (Russian Federation; since October 1991)

· Wielkopolska (Poland; since December 2000)

Since 1976 Hessen and the State of Wisconsin are

linked in a sisterhood-relationship. It was the fi rst

regional cooperation between a federal state in

Germany and a state in the USA. What once started

with student exchange-programs has been expanded

into various fi elds of economic cooperation: technology

transfer, venture capital, business networking.

LIVING PARTNERSHIPS

Economically, the focal point of the partnerships is

the regular exchange of information at the administra-

tive level as well as multiple collaborations between

companies in varying sectors. In order to more

effectively coordinate their joint interests in regards

to the European Commission in Brussels, the European

representatives of Hessen and Aquitaine as well as

Emilia-Romagna and Wielkopolska are housed under

one roof. This is a model of regional cooperation that

has received particular interest in Brussels. In this

manner the regions demonstrate their partnerships to

the outside world.

The State of Hessen maintains cooperation offi ces

in Jaroslawl, Posen, and Bordeaux, which provide

valuable assistance for the generation of contacts and

the evaluation and implementation of joint projects.

Hessen is connected with Emilia-Romagna and Wis-

consin by close collaborations of schools, universities,

and technical colleges as well as district and city

partnerships.

Page 15: Good Reasons For Hessen

Hessen has reached top positions in many fi elds, especially

in business dynamics. No other territorial state has had

a higher domestic product by workforce number over the

last quarter century. In 2008 it equaled 70,600 Euros –

more than 14 percent higher than the national average.

Hessen is not only ahead in terms of labor productivity, but

also in job numbers compared to many other regions, with

a signifi cantly lower unemployment rate than elsewhere.

Only reaching 7.4 percent in 2008 in Hessen, it equaled 8.7

percent in Germany as a whole for the same period. The

manufacturing sector provides 702,000 jobs, the service

sector 2.4 million.

The manufacturing and services sectors cover ten major

established and innovative segments that contribute to the

region’s economic strength. Logistics, automotive and en-

ergy engineering dominate the economic scene in northern

Hessen, while biotech, optics and medical engineering are

especially prominent and successful in central Hessen. The

automobile industry, fi nancial services and chemicals, along

with information and communications, are the bedrock of

southern Hessen’s business landscape. Firmly rooted in

Hessen’s three regions, these industry sectors reach other

countries near and far. The export quota of the manuf-

acturing industry surpasses the national average at 45

percent. In 2008 alone, the Hessian economy exported

goods valued at 51.4 billion Euros – an increase of 4.6

percent over the previous year.

Hessen is unmistakably international. One important

indicator for instance is the amount of foreign direct

investment of over 84 billion Euros – making up more than

18 percent of the total amount in Germany. Why do major

foreign companies value Hessen so much? For one thing,

they benefi t from the state’s central location and superb

infrastructure. The Frankfurt Airport and main railway

station are among the continent’s most important junc-

tions for one thing. Flight routes and railway lines meet is

one reason for investing combined with enthusiasm for

research and entrepreneurialism. Clusters of expertise

and industry networks have emerged across the state

generating new innovations and synergies. Representa-

tives from science and business, institutes and compa-

nies engage in the lively exchange of information. Their

goal is put: “Hessen in the forefront”.

FUTURE-ORIENTEDECONOMIC STRUCTURE & BUSINESS EXPERTISE

· that Hessen is one of the most important investment locations for foreign enterprise in Germany? More than 950 US-American, over

250 Indian and 300 Chinese companies have their headquarters here. More than 200 companies are each represented from both Japan

and Korea.

· that Hessen is the site of numerous missions and representative offi ces of international countries and regions?

· that major foreign companies are located in Hessen: ABB, Amazon, Dunlop, General Motors, Ferrero, Nestlé, Nikon, Procter & Gamble,

Sanofi -Aventis etc.

The automotive industry is one of the key industries in Hessen,

with around 50,000 employees. One of its fl agship companies

is Opel in Rüsselsheim, whose production facilities are among

the most modern in the world and manufacture up to 270,000 au-

tomobiles a year. The Kassel region is home to Volkswagen and

Daimler plants as well as the VW corporation’s spare parts and

logistics center. Numerous supply companies are also located

in Hessen, such as Continental, Veritas or Bosch. Their interna-

tional orientation is particularly notable. The export quota of the

Hessian automotive industry amounts to 55 percent.

The Rhine Main area’s central location draws foreign automo-

tive manufacturers in particular. Companies such as Ferrari or

Seat have established their German headquarters here. Asia is

also strongly represented: numerous companies from the Far

East maintain distribution and logistics centers or their own

research and development centers in Hessen. The on-site auto-

motive companies invest large sums every year in research and

development. The reputations of Opel’s International Technical

Development Center and General Motors’ European Design Cen-

ter stand out in particular, both headquartered in Rüsselsheim.

“The Rhine Main area is very important for us. As a matter of

fact, the region often comes up in connection with Opel in Rüs-

selsheim. But the fact is often overlooked that the entire Frank-

furt region has been deeply shaped by the automotive industry.

Rhine Main has become one of the hearts of the industry.”

Hessen has a fi rst rate reputation as a location for biotech

companies: numerous research institutes, universities and

privately-run educational facilities provide the approximately

250 Hessian biotech companies with an optimal environment

for the development of new technologies and products. At

the Behringwerke site in Marburg, multiple companies from

the pharmaceutical, biotech, and medical sectors have set

up shop. Among them is the Swiss company Novartis with

its vaccine and diagnostics divisions, which constructed the

world’s fi rst fabrication facilities for fl u vaccines from cell

cultures here.

In addition, numerous “big players” in the industry have

settled in Hessen: Fresenius has established its company

headquarters in Bad Homburg, Merck in Darmstadt and

Stada in Bad Vilbel. The collaboration between business

and science is supported by the Frankfurt Innovation Center

for Biotechnology (FIZ - Frankfurter Innovationszentrum für

Biotechnologie).

Approximately 70 working groups are active in the nano-

science and nanotechnology sector. They have been paving

the way both for global companies such as Evonik and Heraeus

and for young research fi rms. Nanotechnology is the core

business of over 120 companies in Hessen, and is a subject of

great relevance for an additional 300 enterprises

in related fi elds.

“Core competency developed over time in on-site operations,

the availability of a highly qualified workforce, and the efficient

regional infrastructure are among the significant reasons Sanofi-

Aventis not only operates one of the world’s largest and most

modern facilities for the biotechnical manufacture of insulin in

Frankfurt-Höchst, but has also expedited the expansion of the

CHEMICAL INDUSTRY

The chemical industry employs more than 57,000 people, making

it one of the most important Hessian business sectors. Global

companies such as Merck, Sanofi-Aventis and Clariant are at

home here. The chemical industry is also international in ano-

ther manner: its export quota amounts to around 62 percent.

The largest chemical site is to the west of Frankfurt: around

22,000 people are employed at Industriepark Höchst.

More than 90 of the approximately 200 Hessian companies are

domiciled here, from the chemical, pharmaceutical, biotech,

crop protection and nutritional additive sectors. An additional

important role is played by the Darmstadt site, with around

12,000 employees.

A large part of industry revenue is constituted by chemical raw

materials needed in other branches but also by the chemical

industry itself. In addition, coating agents and adhesives are

an important factor. But by far the most important focal point

are pharmaceutical products: around half of the industry’s total

revenues are accounted for by companies manufacturing

remedies and medication.

“We are at home in the global markets, but our actual home is

Hessen. The state provides us with a superb infrastructure and

an open-minded environment. We employ a workforce of more

than 4,200 at our Hessian sites. These sites will continue to

profit from our international growth in the future.”

AVIATION AND SPACE TECHNOLOGYVEHICLE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY

Individuals and companies from Hessen have been earning

acclaim for their pioneering achievements in the fi eld of

aviation ever since the very beginning of German aeronautics.

Today more than 200 companies in Hessen are part of the

aviation and space technology industries or supply them with

products and services. Darmstadt in particular is a principal

center of competence. Numerous renowned research

institutes and companies have settled there.

Future prospects for the aviation and space technology

industries are particularly promising, with many international

organizations such as the ESOC center and the EUMETSAT

weather satellite supplier based here. Well-known industry

giants such as Rolls-Royce and Diehl Aerospace supply power

trains and control systems, while service companies such as

EDAG and VEGA develop and manufacture components among

other things.

But traditional vehicle construction also has a long tradition

in Hessen. Thus, locomotives were already being built in

Kassel more than 100 years ago. Today the Canadian company

Bombardier Transportation manufactures rolling stock

here. Companies such as SMA Railway Technology and

ThyssenKrupp are also active in rail technology in Kassel. In

total, around 90 companies in Hessen are actively involved

in vehicle construction. In addition to operations for the rail

industry, the manufacture of ships and boats, bicycles and

motorcycles play a part as well.

“As a successful company in aviation and space technology,

VEGA Deutschland has been firmly rooted in Darmstadt for 30

years. In order to remain successful, we must innovate. Our

location supports our ambitions across the board.”

FINANCIAL SERVICES

The metropolis of Frankfurt and its banking towers have be-

come the embodiment of the foremost center of fi nance on the

European continent. The fl oor of the German stock exchange,

Deutsche Börse, can be found in the heart of Frankfurt. The

European Central Bank has monitored the European currency

area from here since 1998, and for more than 50 years the

German Central Bank, Deutsche Bundesbank, has set its

guidelines for the German economy from the metropolis on

the Main River. About 300 banks from over 50 countries have

opened in Frankfurt, attracting in their wake other fi nancial

sector players: insurance companies, investment companies,

consultants, auditors, law fi rms and investment analysts

make up a close-knit network of services covering the entire

Rhine Main area for services related to the fi nancial sector.

Around 140,000 people are employed in Hessen’s fi nancial

sector, more than half of those in Frankfurt. Dedicated aca-

demics at such universities and educational institutes as the

“House of Finance” at the Johann-Wolfgang-Goethe-Univer-

sity and the “Frankfurt School of Finance and Management”

tend to the further development of the top-caliber younger

generation.

“The financial location Frankfurt is the DZ Bank Group’s junction

for the international financial markets and the customers of

over 1,000 co-operative and agricultural credit unions across

Germany.”

INFORMATION & COMMUNICATIONS TECHNOLOGY

More than 600 gigabytes of electronic data are transmitted

by the Frankfurt internet exchange DE-CIX per second. It is

the world’s second largest data exchange node equivalent

to about 90 percent of all German and more than a third of all

European data traffi c. The Rhine Main area offers a world-class

infrastructure with the DE-CIX, an extremely dense fi ber glass

network, and the UMTS standard HSDPA is available across a

wide area, making the Hessen location extremely attractive for

the information and communications technology sectors: Nearly

10,000 Hessian companies with a workforce of more than 90,000

employees are active in this exemplary industry – Hessen’s most

powerful technology segment by the number of jobs.

The state offers an excellent base for the recruitment of highly

qualifi ed personnel: more than half of the universities in Hessen

provide courses in information and communications.

The high technological and educational standards have been

noticed not just by top representatives in German software

development such as the two companies based in Darmstadt,

Software AG Deutschland and CA Deutschland, or CSC in

Wiesbaden, but also by the technology provider T-Systems in

Frankfurt as well as many foreign investors in information and

communications technology such as Accenture in Kronberg.

“Hessen is especially interesting for Motorola due to its

geographic location in the middle of Germany, the economically

powerful Rhine Main area and the quick access to the Frankfurt

Airport, connecting our international company to the world.”

LOGISTICS

Conveniently situated in the center of Germany and Europe,

Hessen has become an internationally signifi cant transportati-

on hub: the state is distinguished by its fi rst-class air trans-

portation, rail, and road networks.

Logistics is one of the strongest industrial specializations in

Hessen with about 203,000 employees. Frankfurt Airport alone

employees 70,000 people and achieves an annual turnover of

about two million tons of air freight. Frankfurt ranks at the top

among European airports in terms of freight management.

Around 300 logistics companies have settled in the so-called

Cargo City, among them global companies such as DHL World-

wide and Federal Express. By 2012 a research center is to be

completed in the immediate vicinity of the Frankfurt Airport,

closely connecting research and business through the “House

of Logistics & Mobility”.

Northern Hessen has established itself as a location for

distribution logistics. Logistics companies benefi t from the

extremely late “cut off time”: nowhere else can packages be

accepted so late and still have their delivery guaranteed for the

next day to anywhere in Germany. This advantage is utilized by

numerous companies such as DB Schenker, GLS, Amazon, Libri

and Volkswagen.

“The Frankfurt Airport is Lufthansa Cargo’s hub airport, where

international freight converges. The heart of intercontinental air

freight transports beats here. The flows of interna-tional freight

come together here. The heart of intercontinental air freight

transport beats here. Europe’s largest freight airport offers us

excellent conditions: located in the heart of the European conti-

nent, with superb infrastructure, important strategic partners,

and strong industrial companies in the direct vicinity.”

MEDICAL TECHNOLOGY

Hessen is a key player on the global market for medical

products: some 900 companies employ around 20,000 people,

among them global companies like B. Braun, Fresenius,

Biotest, Siemens Healthcare Diagnostics, Almo Erzeugnisse

Erwin Busch. Numerous medium-size companies also

contribute to the sector’s success. Their export quota of

around 63 percent shows the strong portion of deliveries to

other countries. A varying corporate landscape has been

established in Hessen, representing all branches of medical

technology. More than half of the turnover comes from

products developed less than two years ago. This makes the

emphasis placed on research clear: the medical engineering

fi eld invests more than twice as much as other fi elds. Every

second company maintains its own development division –

and close connections to universities. For instance to the

Riedberg Campus at the Johann-Wolfgang-Goethe-University

in Frankfurt, the Frankfurt Institute for Advanced Studies and

also the Provadis Partners for Education and Consulting.

ENVIRONMENTAL TECHNOLOGY

Hessian environmental technology companies operate in varied

fi elds, for instance water/waste water, waste material/recy-

cling, renewable energies, air pollution control/noise reduction

as well as energy production and conversion technologies.

About 77,000 experts are currently developing progressive

technologies for an environmentally friendly economy, in a total

of about 2,400 industry companies, engineering fi rms, consul-

ting fi rms, and trade enterprises.

More than 90 percent of environmental technology in Hessen

is comprised of small and medium-sized fi rms. Hessen is also

home to a few global players, whose innovative technological

solutions are developed here and then utilized worldwide. The

state invests like almost no other in the researching of renew-

able energies, relying on the sector’s competent interdisci-

plinary approach. To be competitive in international markets,

companies bank on their highly qualifi ed workforce, internal

company training and advanced education and ten that intense-

ly prepare the next generation of experts for their future tasks

in operations and research.

“Northern Hessen has made a national and international name

for itself in the renewable energies field, through its university,

OPTICAL INDUSTRY

The central Hessian city of Wetzlar is one of Germany’s

optical industry centers. Approximately 70 optical companies

are located in and around Wetzlar with about 5,400 employees

and a turnover close to a 4 million fi gure via the development

and manufacture of optical equipment.

In order to boost the region’s innovative power in optics, the

Photonics Center Hessen (PZH - Photonik Zentrum Hessen)

was founded in 2005 in Wetzlar. The center aims to be a

“smithy for ideas and applications laboratory” for the optical

industry. More than a dozen companies develop new products

and processes there, in the areas of optics, optoelectronics,

sensor technology, and precision engineering. A particular

focus is networking, among others with the Hessian

universities such as the University of Kassel. Across the state,

about 180 companies and 20,000 employees are operative

in the optical industry, among them many highly specialized

companies like the laser technology manufacturer Excel

Technology Europe in Darmstadt or Vitronic in Wiesbaden,

a globally leading company in image processing.

“Wetzlar as a location is very important for us, because the

optical cluster Wetzlar, with over 70 well-known optical

QUALITY “MADE IN HESSEN”

Innovations frequently stem from highly specialized small and medium-sized companies. Accelerating the innovation

process by transferring specifi c knowledge and technology plays a particularly important role for them, enabling them to

transform good ideas into mature products they can bring to market. Outstanding examples for inventiveness and quality

from Hessen can be found around the world - from Thonet chairs to Leica cameras to the Transrapid, from Riesling to

Selters water to frankfurters. But alongside the well-known brand products, many “Hessen-Champions” are also “Made

in Hessen”, such as the liquid crystals manufactured by the Merck company for LCDs, the medication insulin, or the most

powerful locomotive engines in the world. One thing is absolutely necessary for such innovative products: a superbly

trained workforce.

Hessen’s enormous pool of highly qualifi ed experts is unlike that of any other location. Hessen’s outstanding education

and training system not only helps in sustaining economic growth in the region, it also attracts foreign investors.

The open and modern educational landscape and the close cooperation between business and science attract students

and teachers from around the world to the local educational institutions. Its 18 universities, fi ve Max-Planck-Institutes,

29 technology and entrepreneur centers, and more than 100 scientifi c research institutes give Hessen an unparalleled

wealth of personnel, know-how, ideas and energy. No wonder that a new company is formed in the state every ten minutes.

Whether highly qualifi ed specialists or researchers, young academicians, or promising talents,

administrators, or support staff, Hessen offers an abundance of expert personnel. After all,

Hessen trains more young talent in the disciplines of computer science, engineering and natural

sciences than the national average, an important economic factor for the state. The science

location Hessen offers numerous bilingual or English language courses, providing study and

research opportunities for students from all over the world. The Hessian universities and technical

colleges also maintain close bilateral relationships with partner universities and research

facilities around the globe.

Five educational sites and their universities stand out as exemplary:

THE BEST EMPLOYEES ARE ALREADY HERE

Marburg

The Philipps-University in Marburg has one of the richest traditions among German universities

and is associated with the names of many important scientists. Famous scholars, such as the

fi rst winner of the Nobel Prize for Medicine, Emil von Behring, the chemist Robert Bunsen as well

as Karl-Ferdinand Braun, the inventor of the fi rst cathode ray (Braun’s tube), laid the foundation

for today’s scientifi c research disciplines of physics, chemistry and medicine. Other draws of the

university are short courses of study, outstanding research, highly qualifi ed support for the younger

generation, and intensive international relationships.

www.uni-marburg.de

Gießen

In addition to a broad curriculum that includes the classic sciences, legal and business studies, social

and educational studies, and language and cultural studies, the second-largest university in Hessen,

the Justus-Liebig-Universität Gießen, also offers a range of disciplines that is unique not just in Hessen:

human and veterinary medicine, agricultural science, home economics, and nutritional science.

This constellation enables the one-of-a-kind research focus “Man-Nutrition-Environment”, whereby

individual aspects of the entire food chain are scientifi cally evaluated, from production to consumption.

Frankfurt am Main

Frankfurt´s Johann-Wolfgang-Goethe-University is the largest Hessian university and since the

beginning of 2008 the only foundation university in the state with far reaching autonomy. In the

context of a rebuilding and restructuring program that is unique to Europe, the university is being

expanded by the new locations Westend Campus and Riedberg Campus. By the end of 2011, it

will have been converted into one of the most modern educational facilities in all of Germany.

The Goethe-University has earned a solid position among Germany’s ten best research univer-

sities. The “House of Finance” in Frankfurt, a competence center unique in Germany, focuses its

fi nancial research at the most signifi cant European fi nancial sciences location in an interdiscipli-

nary and practice-oriented fashion, reinforcing its international relevance as well.

The university is bundling its natural science departments on the Riedberg Campus, the so-called

“Life Sciences”. The Frankfurt Institute for Advanced Studies (FIAS), dedicated to the interdisci-

plinary exchange between life sciences and neurosciences, has established itself in the Science

City Frankfurt-Riedberg as have the Max-Planck Institute for Biophysics and the Frankfurt

Biotechnology Innovation Center (FIZ - Frankfurter Innovationszentrum Biotechnologie), which

supports cooperation between the worlds of business and science.

extensive and constantly updated overview

of suitable convention centers and event

locations, like the CongressPark Hanau, the

Event organizers are particularly attracted

to the metropolitan region of Frankfurt

Rhine Main. As a location for conventions

and congresses, Hessen has more

highlights on tap too: cultural cities with

historic architecture, beautiful scenic

regions and modern healing baths with their

own particular fl air. These provide each

event with the proper backdrop.

In addition to several outstanding stars in

the convention heavens – like the Congress

Center Messe Frankfurt, the ESPERANTO

Congress and Cultural Center Fulda, and the

darmstadtium in Darmstadt – Hessen can

offer a bounty of historic congress houses –

like the Kurhaus Wiesbaden and the

Kongress Palais Kassel. Modern congress

class offerings.

Hans-Dieter Brenner, Chief Executive Offi cer, Helaba Landesbank Hessen-Thüringen

“Hessen is an extremely attractive business region with great future potential, not just for the Helaba Landesbank Hessen-Thüringen

as a European regional bank with an international scope. Our headquarters in Frankfurt am Main anchors us fi rmly in one of Europe’s

strongest growth regions. The fi nancial location Frankfurt has established itself as an international fi nancial center – globally connected

and with hardly beatable advantages in many aspects. For us and for our customers, Hessen is an ideal location and starting point for

global banking and business operations. And last but not least, Hessen is also my home.”

WHAT A GREAT PLACE TO LIVEHessen is synonymous with quality of life.

Goethestrasse in Frankfurt is one of the top

addresses in Germany, with many shops

offering the fi nest and best brands in the world.

Elegant Wilhelmstrasse in Wiesbaden displays

its exclusiveness and luxuriousness. On the

“antiquities mile”, Taunusstrasse, one can fi nd

mostly antiques, artwork, and design pieces. The

romantic little lanes of the old town tempt with

nostalgia, culinary delicacies and all kinds of

unusual gift articles.

Hessen also has a lot to offer for active recreation.

The outstanding strength of the economy and the

large number of international fi rms make the sport

of golf particularly important in Hessen. A round

of golf is just the thing to relax and unwind between

two business appointments. Hessen now has 53

golf clubs with more than 39,000 members.

The fi rst golf course on German terrain was installed

in Bad Homburg in 1898, and the fi rst golf club

was founded in 1893 in Wiesbaden. The variety

of Hessen’s natural beauty can be discovered

by guests everywhere they turn. Nature can be

impressively experienced not only by car, but by

foot – approx. 40,000 km marked hiking routes – or

even from the air. The offerings for recreational and

athletic activities are extremely diverse. Particularly

popular and well-known beyond Hessen’s borders

are the splendid river hiking trails, as well as

Hessen’s 2,200 km of well developed long-distance

cycling routes. In addition to the nine long-distance

cycling routes, numerous mountain bike trails of

varying diffi culty offer extraordinary experiences

for cycling enthusiasts. Coupled with hearty Hessian

hospitality, your unique recreational enjoyment is

a given.

Hessen has much more to offer than just

business! Hessen offers pure zest for life

and a superb quality of life: warm-hearted

people, idyllic nature, romantic villages,

traditional folk festivals, a plethora of

culture, historic vineyards, recuperative

spas and thousands of other ways of

experiencing, discovering, enjoying and

relaxing - Hessen is all of these. In other

words: You may come to Hessen to work.

But you stay here to enjoy life!

From the skyscrapers of Frankfurt City it’s

only a stone’s throw to the countryside.

Less than a quarter of an hour after leaving

Frankfurt to the northwest, you can take

a deep breath of the famous air in the

Taunus Mountains. In addition to the spa

and casino city Bad Homburg, the outdoor

museum Hessenpark and the Saalburg, the

only reconstructed Roman fortress in the

world, entice visitors.

Just a few kilometers to the west is

the Rheingau, one of the most beautiful

vineyard regions in Germany. This area,

stretching along the banks of the River

Rhine and extremely popular among

both history and wine enthusiasts, is the

gateway to the UNESCO World Cultural

Heritage Site Upper Middle Rhine Valley.

This is where the Spätlese late harvest was

invented, and places such as Rüdesheim,

Johannisberg Castle and the Eberbach

Monastery are just a few prominent

examples for the wine and cultural charms

of this region.

Similarly part of the UNESCO World

Cultural Heritage List are the Messel

Pit, as an absolutely unique fossil site,

the south Hessian Lorsch Monastery,

as an impressive witness of Carolingian

architectural craftsmanship, and the

Limes Frontier of the Roman Empire, as an

important archeological monument. But

there are also outstanding architectural

monuments from later periods, for instance

from the Baroque in Kassel and Fulda, from

the Art Nouveau period in Darmstadt and

Bad Nauheim, as well as from Historicism in

the Hessian state capital Wiesbaden.

In addition to the four UNESCO World

Cultural Heritage Sites, Hessen also has

an “enchanting” UNESCO World Memory

Register Site: the personal copies of the

Children’s and Household Tales by the

Brothers Grimm in Kassel. Along with

the Luther Bible, this is German cultural

history’s most famous book. The fairy tale

collections can be marveled at in the Kassel

Grimm Museum.

WESTHAFEN FRANKFURT

A journey through Hessen is like time travelling

through architectural periods. From medieval

fortress complexes to postmodern industrial

architecture, you can fi nd contemporary witnesses

of global signifi cance. Idyllic timber-framed houses

provide a backdrop for many of Hessen’s cities

and towns. Clerical strongholds such as Fulda and

Limburg erected imposing churches and domes.

Many monastery complexes are still active, and

bear witness to their great infl uence on political,

cultural, and social developments in Hessen’s

regions. Numerous castles whisk you away to the

world view and lifestyle of landgraves and princes.

Lovers of contemporary architecture will also fi nd

examples of buildings in Hessen that will enter

architectural history – and not just in the major

metropolitan city of Frankfurt. Shopping malls,

museum structures and factory buildings are the

new challenges for internationally known architects.

THE NUMBER 1 SPA STATEWith around 30 healing springs and spa lo-

cations, Hessen is among the German states

with the most extensive experience in spa

treatments. The tradition for care and rela-

xation for body and soul is practically unique

in Germany. As far back as the Romans, the

healing power of hot springs has been appre-

ciated, e.g. in Bad Vilbel or Wiesbaden with

its 26 sodium-chloride springs (up to 67 °C).

From the bubbly spa operations in the

“strongholds” to the quiet personal atmo-

sphere in the smaller spa locations, an all-

round feeling of wellbeing is fostered for

guests. Lots of facilities and services to make

bodies and souls fi t are available for daily vi-

sitors as well. Splendid spa parks and hiking

trails and numerous leisure activities ensure

variety across the board.

· that 27 percent of overnight stays are booked for

wellness packages in an impressive art nouveau

In addition to famous Hessen specialties which

Hessen has also become a haven of gourmet

HESSEN – SYSTEMATICALLY UNBUREAUCRATIC

In Hessen we know that the welfare of the state

and its citizens depends upon how well its economy

develops. Therefore, Hessen is opening its doors

and gates to entrepreneurs. You benefi t from

Hessen’s willingness to say yes: yes to daring

business ideas, yes to courageous construction

projects, yes to creative fi nancing models, yes to

everything that promotes speedy, smooth business

operations. Hessen has already eliminated half of the

legal regulations and administrative requirements in

the Economic Ministry’s purview and has ensured

that Hessen has the country’s shortest approval

processes for Federal emission standards and gene

technology. All this saves companies a lot of time and

administrative effort. In implementing e-government

services, Hessen has played a leading role: the single

Hessen

The State of Hessen has made optimal use of its cen-

tral location in the middle of Germany, and has built

up a transportation infrastructure that is unparalleled

in Europe.

Europe’s many strategic advantages start with

Frankfurt Airport. With about 2 million tons of cargo

and 53.5 million passengers a year, it is one of the

world’s leading intermodal transportation hubs,

located directly in the middle of Europe with excellent

connections worldwide. Every important destination

can be reached multiple times per day: over 317 fl ight

destinations in 105 countries, 4,600 direct global

connections a week, and a hub for 130 airlines. These

numbers result in Germany’s largest airport being

ranked in the top ten most important global airports

for freight turnover and passenger fl ights.

Frankfurt Airport is the only major airport with a long

distance train station providing direct connections

to the Intercity Express high-speed rail system and

the European Rapid Rail Transport system. Located in

the immediate vicinity of the airport is the crossroads

for all trans-European north-south and east-west

connections: the Autobahn interchange Frankfurt –

Germany’s most traveled stretch of the Autobahn.

Just as impressive are the statistics regarding

Frankfurt’s main railroad station. With 350,000

passengers per day, it is the largest train station on

the continent with the highest number of passengers.

From here, the Intercity Express trains can reach

most economic centers in Germany and Europe within

just a few hours.

The largest airport and the most frequented railroad

station in continental Europe – seamlessly integrated

air and rail connections - a central location at the

crossroads of the most important Autobahn connec-

tions in Germany: convincing reasons to choose the

business location Hessen.

HESSEN – GERMANY‘S MOST INTERNATIONAL ECONOMIC REGION

Hessen assumes a central position in Germany and Europe, both geogra-

phically and economically. It has the strongest economy of and the highest

labor productivity making it the leading German federal state with a gross

domestic product by workforce number of around 70,600 Euros. Hessen’s

economic heart beats in the Rhine Main area, where over 70 percent of

gross value creation is generated. The service sector constitutes the majo-

rity of this with over 75 percent. As a hub for transportation, a convention

location, and a fi nancial center, Frankfurt is one of the top ten leading

economic regions worldwide. Hessen is also a leading international eco-

nomic region, with a high quality of life. People from more than 190 nations

contribute to its cultural variety, cosmopolitan outlook, and vibrant day to

day living and shared activities in education, at work and at play.
