GOOD SAMARITAN INDUSTRIES NEWSLETTER ISSUE 15, AUTUMN 2019 GSI Gets Grill’d They say you’ve got to be in it to win it, and GSI was very pleased to be the recipient of a $300 donation after entering a local restaurant’s community donation program. Every month Grill’d restaurants support three local community groups through their ‘Local Matters in Action’ campaign. Donation Jars are provided at each restaurant for each charity, and customers can drop a token into their chosen community group’s donation jar when they purchase a burger. GSI applied to join the campaign and we were accepted by Grill’d at Shafto Lane in Perth CBD, and at the end of the month, we were delighted to be awarded the first place prize! Thank you to our friends at Grill’d - and to the local community - for supporting us! All donations help to strengthen our services, and we’re very appreciative of every penny. Little Peoples Place GSI’s school and child care donation drives educate children about how recycling can ultimately help people with disabilities. And recently, Little Peoples Place Child Care Centre in Port Kennedy held a donation drive to gather pre-loved clothing and toys, which was tied into a practical, positive learning experience. Well done, Little Peoples Place! Would you be interested in organising a donation drive to help us? If so, please contact Emily Noteboom on 9463 0565 or [email protected]. She would love to hear from you! Right: Emily Noteboom explaining the journey of donations through our Good Sammy Stores. Kicking Goals Ken Gray started his journey with GSI in September 2017 with a goal of finding and maintaining part time employment. And since then, Ken has most certainly been kicking goals. Ken attends our Life and Work Skills (LAWS) classes at GSI, which are supporting him to build his confidence, form new friendships and become work-ready. He has also gained work experience opportunities with GSI in the warehouse and at Coles. Both of these opportunities have given him hands-on experience in safety awareness, time keeping and management skills, whilst preparing him for paid employment. Ken is excited about what the future holds and the many more opportunities open to him at GSI and within the community. All of this could not have been achieved without the support from his wonderful family and friends, as well as Options. Keep up the great work, Ken. We love to see you kicking those goals! Hi Emily, You seem to be the crowd favourite! We’ve counted up all the tokens for the month of January and our guests decided that they wanted Good Samaritan Industries (GSI) to receive the biggest donation of $300. Congratulations! We hope that the $300 can come in handy for your group and that being a part of the Local Matters program has helped you drum up some extra awareness and support in your local community. Ken Gray

City of Fremantle – George Street FestivalThrough the great work undertaken by WA Disability Enterprises Manager, Lil Paskos, GSI was approached by the City of Fremantle to complete a letterbox drop for close to 500 residents, to promote the City’s George Street Festival. ...and, as you can imagine, the GSI team was only too happy to assist – and our trustworthy and hard-working team members Rhea and Damien completed the mail drop within four hours!

Since this initial project, we have been approached by the City of Fremantle to complete further mail drops.

If you have any enquiries regarding this service, or would like to find out more, please contact Emily Noteboom to discuss further on (08) 9463 0565.

Chair’s Article Easter has arrived, and with it, I would like to extend to you all the very best for the season.

Traditionally Easter is a time to celebrate new life and new beginnings. It is a time for us to be thankful and express our gratitude for what we have in life. Another new beginning is the appointment of a new CEO for GSI, Melanie Kiely. The Board is very pleased that Melanie has joined us and we will look to her strong leadership as we pursue our mission in the years ahead.

This edition of Good News recognises and celebrates the growth and achievements of people with disabilities, where GSI has played a supportive role – it also acknowledges the support from those in the broader community for GSI’s mission.

As well, I would like to express my sincere gratitude and appreciation to GSI’s staff and supporters whose dedication and commitment have allowed GSI to continue delivering on its mission.

May this Easter bring you much love, joy and happiness.

Trent Bartlett – Chairman

Acting CEO’s Article “Alone, we can do so little; together, we can do so much” – Helen Keller.

If I was to be asked to name one of the themes from this edition of Good News, it would be support from the community. Three of the articles talk to the compassion and actions of the community to support GSI’s mission of creating opportunities for people with disabilities. This support is not something that GSI takes for granted.

Another theme is around the ability for people to continue to grow and develop. It’s interesting that the two themes are intertwined as people don’t grow in isolation but in a community.

David Granville – Acting CEO

Finding a Real GemWhen GSI’s Options first met Cam, he was a shy young man who didn’t have a great deal of self-confidence. So, the first thing we set about doing was to get to know the real Cam which involved understanding his interests and helping to support him to explore those interests further.

Cam’s mum Michelle acknowledges that he has so much potential.

“He has so much encouragement and support from Ross, one of GSI’s mentors. Ross really helps him to learn new skills and feel comfortable and confident. He still has a long way to go, but he is on the right track - yipeeeee!”

Over time – and whilst working with others who knew Cam – Ross discovered that he had a genuine interest in rocks, gems and geology. Rather than doing everything for him, Ross suggested that Cam gather information and do his own research, which he is brilliant at! Cam then found that there was a Lapidary Group that Ross could support him with by assisting him to catch public transport to get there, submitting a membership

application and then regularly attending the club.

“I have said to Ross before that although he may ‘just be doing his job’, he shows so much patience, empathy, understanding and care to Cam and, as parents, it is so reassuring to know that our son is in such caring hands,” adds Michelle.

From little things, BIG things growJessica is one of GSI’s busy retail assistants who is the first to admit that she has loved every one of her 17 years working at our Midland Good Sammy store. However, outside of work, Jessica’s goal has been to be more independent and involved in her local community. In a nutshell, she wanted to be able to do things without always having to rely on others, particularly her family.

With one-on-one support over the past six months from a GSI’s Options mentor, Jessica has been focusing on building her independence, both at home and in the community.

One of the first things Jessica’s mentor assisted her to do independently was to safely catch the bus to her local coffee shop.

To start with, the coffee shop was simply somewhere where the mentor and Jessica could talk about strategies to help Jessica achieve her other independence goals.

Jessica gradually became more and more confident catching the bus and is now going independently to the coffee shop on the weekends, when her family are home resting. She’s thrilled as she doesn’t need to rely on them being available to take her out anymore!

To top things off, one of her other goals was to develop more relationships in the community and, over time, a lovely connection has developed between Jessica and the owners of the coffee shop.

What’s more, Jessica is now meeting and talking to more and more people in the broader community, and says she has noticed how her confidence has grown, and how much better her relationships have become.

What a great result!

Turning over your stock?Good Sammy can help!If you’re in the retail business, did you know that if you donate your unwanted trading stock to Good Sammy, you may be eligible for a tax deduction?

And, what’s more, your donation can result in more opportunities for West Australians living with a disability.

We recently gratefully received a donation of unwanted stock from Ox-Blu men’s fashion boutique in Maylands.

Owner Michael Stevens said he was stoked to make a sizeable clothing donation to Good Sammy.

“I’m relieved to know that my unwanted stock can be of some benefit to others, thank you Good Sammy for allowing me to chip in,” he said.
