Love

The readings this week call us to love as the Father first loved. Love has many different meanings in today’s world. We use the word love when we talk about our favorite food, clothes, movies, books, etc. We also talk about loving our family members and loving our friends. Though we use the same word, we mean different things. I love my husband differently than how I love my children. My love for my children is different than my love for my siblings and my parents. The multiple uses of this one simple word can cause us to simplify God’s call. This love that Jesus is talking about and that he modeled is not about a feeling, but about a determined act of the will. We must willfully choose to put others’ happiness first. We are called to love as God first loved. When we look at how God loved us, we see that God sacrificed everything for us. He gave His only son so that we may have life to abundance. Like God we are called to sacrifice everything we have for the good of others. This kind of love is known as agape and is a love of goodwill. The meaning of agape love is laid out in First Corinthians, “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.” Though this reading is sometimes used at wed-dings, the love that is demonstrated is how we are called to encounter eve-ryone. By practicing the moral virtues we can begin to truly live this reading. In order to remain in His love Jesus reminds us that we must follow the commandments. Jesus says, “just as I have kept my Father’s command-ments and remain in his love.” Jesus emptied Himself in following God’s command for His life. Are we truly willing to offer everything we have and everything we are to follow where God is leading us? Are we able to bear wrongs patiently and forgive all injuries? Are we patient? Do we practice humility? As a parent I struggle with having patience as I am telling my children for what feels like the fifteenth time to put on their shoes and get ready for school. I struggle with keeping calm when my child decides to talk back. In the midst of the ugly chaos that sometimes ensues from having four chil-dren I have been blessed to grow in the virtues that God has given us. As a parent, I am able to understand more clearly how God loves us whether or not we deserve to be loved. Even when I am upset with one of my children I still love them with everything I have. God loves us not because we deserve to be loved, not because we live up to certain standards, but because that is who God is. Regardless of whether or not we deserve His love at any given moment He is always loving us with open arms. Carrie Aimers ’ RE Coordinator

“Some people are so foolish that they think they can go through life without the help of the Blessed Mother. Love the Madonna and pray the rosary, for her Rosary is the weapon against the evils of the world today. All graces given by God pass through the Blessed Mother.” St. Pio of Pietrelcina WSL Committee

2018 Bishop's Appeal

Don’t we all sometimes need a new beginning? Jesus

performed miraculous healings we hear throughout the

Gospels. He gave people a new beginning and demon-

strated his power as the Son of God. Many who wit-

nessed or experienced these healings became true be-

lievers Embracing a Life of Discipleship. Jesus was

building disciples through these healings.

Catholic Charities continues this mission of Jesus to-

day. They help people create new beginnings. Through

the counseling services they provide in mental health,

debt management, addiction, adoption and parenting

support, and marriage and family conflict, Catholic

Charities helps people create a clean start.

To help those in need, please make your gift to the

Bishop’s Appeal today. Contact our parish office, use

the pledge card you received at home, or visit the

Bishop’s Appeal website at

www.catholicfoundationgb.org/give to make your

gift. Thank you for your generosity!

RELIGIOUS ED NEWS JESUS & COMPANY

IT’S TIME TO talk about a few things in and outside of the Upper Room that need doing. There is a whole pile of birth-day cards that could use your artistic skills on them to make them bright and colorful for all of those who might be cele-brating a birthday in the future. You know, it’s quite possible that might be happening to everyone at JC. We keep men-tioning this special way we have to make others happy by remembering them on their birthdays and it does really need our attention. To some it may be no big thing but then again...how do You feel when you are remembered by friends? It really doesn’t take a whole lot of effort to love each other, does it? MAYBE THE snow is gone for good now and we can plan our Mary Garden for yet another year. Hopefully we are seeing it grow in size bit-by-bit each year. It will still be lo-cated at the entrance to the convent and if we are ambitious enough it will easily be seen from the church parking lot. We are still thinking about adding a small cement bench either in front of the Garden or off to one side. This may be a thought we can pursue once the Garden is relocated in the future. We can just “keep it on paper” for now along with other ideas we may have to watch it “grow.” Anyway, stay tuned, because all of this could be fun. Have you ever tried digging and planting? Give it a try this summer - you may find out what you’ve been missing. HERE’S YET another reminder about those silent buckets in the Upper Room. In case you didn’t realize itE.They are not supposed to be silent! Lent has been over for a few weeks now, the many buckets are back at their spots in the cupboards and if you want them filled we need to fill the “For Us” jug first. And of course we still have never stopped in our desire to keep filling the “For Them” jug. That one will hopefully be never ending. Our other one ($19 a month) is automatic so we never have to worry about that one. That will carry on for us for as long as we existE.and how long will that be? JESUS - we don’t even have to search for youE.you are always here.

MISSION STATEMENT As always, we entrust our program to Our Lady of Good Help, who asked Sister Adele, “teach them their cate-chism, how to sign themselves with the sign of the Cross, and how to approach the sacraments; this is what I wish you to do.” Let us ask her to help our parish RE program flourish in its’ mission which is: To provide an adequate spiritual and catechetical formation for our youth, so they may enter the world equipped with grace, knowledge, and a relationship with our heavenly Father.”

QUESTION OF THE WEEK Adults: How is love of others connected to love of God?

Spiritual Adoption Campaign

“Jesus, Mary and Joseph, I love you very much, I beg you to spare the life of the unborn baby that I have spiritually adopted who is in danger of abortion.”……Good Shepherd’s Spiritual Adoption is into it’s 3rd month. We have spiritually adopted and are praying for 2 sets of twins; 1 set of quadruplets; 88 individual boys; and 97 girls. Names are listed in the back of church. At the end of the first trimester, our babies are will be about 3 inches long, being fully formed and weigh about an ounce. They have their own unique set of fingerprints. They begin sucking their thumbs at week 9 and will tightly grasp something placed in the palm of their hands. They are breathing amniotic fluid to help develop their respiratory systems. To read more and keep up-dated on your baby’s monthly development view the posters at the church entrances. Thank you for your continued prayers.

Social Concerns Committee

May....the Month of Mary For centuries the Catholic Church has set aside the entire month of May to honor Mary, the Mother of God. Not just a day in May, but the entire month. Please join in the Living Rosary, May 9th at 6:30 pm in church to recognize that Mary is Mother, your mother, my mother, everyone’s mother and because she cares for all of us day in and day out without fail, interceding for us in even the tiniest matters. Mary Queen of Peace, pray for us.
