Message from Monsignor René Mathieu: (1) This weekend, we are beginning an Increased Offertory Campaign in our parish. Priests will address the matter at most Masses (and do so next weekend, November 12/13, at St. Philip (4:30 pm), St. Joseph (8 am) and Most Holy Trinity (10:30 am). Lay members of the parish also will speak at all Masses next weekend. (2) Fr. Joseph Manship has faithfully served over 40 years as a priest in the Diocese of Portland − since September 3, 1976. A native of Caribou, he has served in a variety of

ministries, most notably as pastor of Most Holy Trinity Church in Saco. I invite parish-ioners to the 10:30 am Mass at Most Holy Trinity this Sunday, November 6, when he will be priest-celebrant of a Mass of Thanksgiving. All are invited to the light recep-tion that will follow that Mass; it will continue until around 1 pm. (3) Schedule of Weekday Masses: The last Monday morning Mass of the season at St. Margaret Church was celebrated last week on October 31. Beginning this week, on November 7 (as we did last year at the start of the heating season), there will be only one weekday Mass scheduled on Monday mornings during the winter season. It will be at Most Holy Trinity Church at 9:00 am. (4) Now that we have begun the month of November, three major parish activities have our attention. The first is the annual collection of food and money for Thanksgiving baskets. (5) The second is the Christmas Fair next week-end, November 11/12/13, at St. Joseph Church Hall, which is the final fair of the year in Good Shepherd Parish. I appreciate whatever you can do to support our parish fairs because they help with our budgetary needs while bringing people who may not be familiar with the parish into our buildings; it is one more way for neighbors to become familiar with the Catholic Church and Good Shepherd Parish. At every fair this year, I met people who used the opportunity in encountering a priest to speak about returning to the practice of the faith or to explain some need of theirs (I hope copies of the parish weekend bulletin are readily available at all our fairs and dinners). After this weekend, raffle ticket stubs should be delivered directly to the parish office or to the fair itself. Any stubs put into next weekend’s offertory collection will not make it to the fair on time because the collection is deposited after Saturday/Sunday Masses in the bank and not opened until after the weekend. Please help by promoting the raffle among your family members and friends, and by encouraging them to attend the fair. (6) A third major project during the month of November is the 18th annual Thanksgiving Dinner, November 24, at Most Holy Trinity Church Hall sponsored by the Knights of Colum-bus. Everyone in our community is invited to this special meal at no cost. There are many other activities coming up and they are described in this bulletin, but these three events require dozens and dozens of volunteers. Please consider helping out in some way. (7) Next Sunday, November 13, the 10:30 Mass at Most Holy Trinity will mark the 13th Anniversary of the Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration Chapel in Saco. The chaplain, Fr. Ron Labarre, will be the priest-celebrant. Light refreshments and fellow-ship will follow. (8) Thank You of the Week: to those who organized and supported the Harvest Fair at St. Philip, and to those who organized and participated in our annual All Souls Day Evening Prayer last Monday. Thank you!

JOKES PRIESTS CAN TELL, Vol. 7 - Msgr. Tonne: My neighbor’s relatives, with their four-year-old son were visiting. His father was a very successful coach in Colorado and the group had gone to Mass at a Catholic Church. As the services began the little boy was fine, but the longer it took the more restless the four-year-old became, and the mother comforted him saying, “Not much longer.” Presently out of the blue, he looked up at his mom and said, “Just when is half time?”

DIOCESE OF PORTLAND OFFICE OF THE BISHOP

Statement from Bishop Robert P. Deeley on Question 1

In November, Maine residents will cast their vote on Question 1, which seeks to decriminalize

the recreational use of marijuana. Passage of this referendum would make it legal for your children to possess marijuana, a fact recently confirmed by Maine Attorney General Janet Mills.

In a particularly inflamed political climate, perhaps it is best to use the example of another state that has gone down the path Maine is considering now. Examine the devastating impact felt in Colorado since the commercial sale of marijuana began in January of 2014. A comprehensive report issued last month by the Rocky Mountain High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area states that since marijuana has been legalized, marijuana-related traffic deaths have increased by 62 percent and marijuana-related hospitalizations have increased by over 30 percent.

The use and abuse of marijuana by the youth of Colorado has increased by 20 percent since legalization. The young people in Colorado rank first in the nation for marijuana use, an illegal activity for anyone under the age of 21. It should come as no surprise that expulsion and dropout rates have spiked significantly; family lives have been negatively affected; and anxiety about public safety has risen.

Do we really want to bring these issues to Maine families, schools, and communities?

Marijuana represents a significant part of substance use in America and adversely affects the health of millions of Americans. The widespread use of marijuana, particularly by young people

under the age of 18, is steadily increasing while scientific evidence clearly links its long-term damaging effects on brain development. The National Institute on Drug Abuse states: "When marijuana users begin using as teenagers, the drug may reduce thinking, memory, and learning

functions and affects how the brain builds connections between the areas necessary for these functions. Marijuana's effects on these abilities may last a long time or even be permanent."

Legalizing a drug for recreational use that causes these effects on the human body,

particularly our youth, is not a path that civil society should choose to take. Maine is currently waging a losing battle against opioid abuse. Our attention must not be diverted from that health crisis, nor do we want to add fuel to the problem by increasing the number of marijuana users who

might one day "graduate" to other illegal/illicit/proscribed substances. The legalization of marijuana can only serve to worsen this crisis.

The Catholic Church teaches "the use of drugs inflicts very grave damage on human health

and life. Their use, except on strictly therapeutic grounds, is a grave offense." The diocese hopes that voters will listen to doctors, public safety agencies, and substance-abuse professionals who have expressed their opposition to this dangerous prospect.

Legalizing marijuana sends a message to our young people that this recreational drug use is acceptable. I join the Maine Medical Association, the Maine State Chiefs of Police, the Maine Association of School Nurses, the Office of the Attorney General, and many others in opposing the legalization of marijuana. I urge the voters of Maine to vote NO on Question 1 on November 8, 2016.

the Eucharist in this capacity, we would like you to contact the parish at 207-282-3321 x 112 with your name, your phone number and the

name(s) of these individuals you are visiting. Thank you very much.

A Vatican Conference held last April which focused on Nonviolence & Just Peace has brought excitement to the Catholic community. With the

blessing of Pope Francis, participants from all over the world gathered in Rome to discuss the limitations of the Just War Theory and to look with

intention at how a shift to a Just Peace approach would change our world. See https://nonviolencejustpeace.net. A retreat hosted by Pax Christi

Maine members at St. Augustine Parish in Augusta is planned for Nov. 11- 13 titled "Moving from Just War to Just Peace - Transforming Our-selves, our Church and Our World." Participants can join us for all or

part of the weekend. FMI call the Augusta parish office: 623-8823.

Please bring a $25 gift card to benefit our charities from the following: Hannaford, Shaws, Walmart, Target, Renys, Marshalls/TJ Maxx

Good Shepherd Parish Christmas Fair 2016

Nov. 11: 4-7 pm * Nov. 12: 9-6 pm * Nov. 13: 9-1 pm

Msgr. said it very well when he mentioned that The Christmas Fair is not only about the money, but also about the fellowship and the opportunity for non-parishioners to give us a closer look and get their foot in the door. The Christmas Fair is a great chance to get together with friends and to catch up. It’s a great time to bring someone who may not be familiar with our parish. This year we are offering face painting and cookie decorating for the kids, so be sure to bring the little ones along. We are providing a bit more sitting area, and are cooking up a bit more Chowder so that everyone can get a taste on Friday night. This week we will be setting up for the fair. Be sure to use the Elm Street entrance to the property for drop offs. We will have the gate open for you. If you did not drop your Major raffle tickets in this weekend’s offertory, please drop them off at the parish office or bring them with you to the fair. Please do not put your raffle tickets in next weekend’s collection basket. Oh and note that we will be keeping the lights on for you until 6:00 pm on Saturday so that you can enjoy some Christmas Fair after the St. Joseph Church evening Mass. See you at the Fair. ~ Dan Bastarache, 283-9310, Co-Chair
