WHO’S WHO

18 GOODSPEED MUSICALS | 2017 SEASON

I have always been obsessed with death.

I don’t mean that I was a teenager who wore all black and chains and listened to Metallica, but rather like so many of us, I’ve long had a preoccupation with what would happen once we approached the inevitable.

I can recall this memory vividly: of lying in my childhood bedroom, of first forming the question of what would happen past our eighties, our nineties—something that I had never fathomed before. Of my mother putting her hand on my shoulder and telling me that I would someday die, that she and my father would someday die, and that nobody really knew what happened afterwards. Of her trying to comfort me, saying it was so very far off that I didn’t need to worry myself about it, that my parents and I would be around for as long as I could possibly imagine. Of crying as I realized what this all meant.

Because as a child of a secular family, I quickly drew the bone chilling conclusion as to what life probably was: an infinitesimally short period of existence between two infinities of nothingness. I didn’t exist once already, and someday in the not-too-distant future, I wouldn’t exist again.

Sounds like happy subject matter for a musical, eh? Bear with me for a moment…

From this realization came an existential crisis that would flare up during the benchmarks of which we measure our lives—first kisses, first driver’s license, high school graduation, college graduation, etc. We might not always realize it consciously, but we measure our lives on a timeline—always aware of time’s relentless march forward. Think about it for a moment, the decisions we make every day are aware of our progress along this path—the things we want in our twenties are different than that of our forties for the simple reason that we are measuring how much time we have left.

But what if forever wasn’t just an expression. What if forever was real?

What began as a personal escape from my own fears quickly formed into the world of Deathless—a world where living forever, of not aging, of stopping time’s relentless forward motion…was as simple as swallowing a pill.

As a writer, one of my primary interests is creating high concept worlds within which small intimate stories that examine aspects of the human condition can be told. This play is a perfect example of that; while it may sound like science fiction or speculative fiction on the surface, the show is not that concerned with miracle pills or the near future world in which it takes place. Rather, Deathless is a simple family story of living in the wake of loss, of family dynamics after a major event, and of understanding what it means to be alive in a world where death is still present.

Axis Mundi refers to the intersection of Heaven and Earth, or even more broadly, to the boundary between our world and something just beyond. This show, when it is all said and done, explores that idea. Can a family in a Subaru on the Interstate can be an Axis Mundi? Niagara Falls? Family memories? Deathless is a musical that takes place in the world of the profane, but ever so slightly brushes against a world beyond the veil.

Collaborating with director Tina Landau is a writer’s dream: she is thoughtful, inventive, and above all—precise. And Goodspeed is a collaborator itself, and a supportive and dedicated one at that. It is an unbelievable privilege to be working with a theatre that is so committed to supporting and executing our specific vision for this brand new musical.

It’s my hope that Deathless will be first and foremost an emotional story about a family. About a group of characters facing the same questions of what to eat for breakfast, what to play on their iPods, and the big questions of life and loss that will ultimately brush against all of our lives.

I thank you for taking the road trip with us!

AUTHOR'S NOTESby Zack Zadek

GOODSPEED MUSICALS | 2017 SEASON 19

Where We’ve BeenGoodspeed’s beginnings date back to 1963 when we opened our doors as a professional musical theatre in an historic building on the banks of the Connecticut River in East Haddam. Under the direction of Michael Price from 1968 to 2014, Goodspeed transformed from a struggling entity into a non-profit arts organization with a mission. At first, Goodspeed’s commitment was to discover rarely produced musicals from the repertoire, reworking them and bringing them to life. We were also intent on adding to the repertoire by discovering and nurturing promising new musicals presented at both The Goodspeed and The Terris Theatre in neighboring Chester.

In our history, we have produced over 250 musicals, including over 70 world premieres, and exported 21 productions to Broadway. Goodspeed stands as the first regional theatre in America to earn two special Tony Awards, one in 1980 for outstanding contributions to the American musical and a second in 1995 for distinguished achievement for a regional theatre.

Who We Are TodayGoodspeed Musicals mounts both new and newly revived musicals each year on our main stage at The Goodspeed in East Haddam and on our second stage, The Terris Theatre, in Chester–a total of more than 400 performances during the April to December season, attracting 130,000 patrons to the Connecticut River Valley. We stand at the forefront of producing and preserving the American musical, simultaneously reinventing the classics and inventing new ones. We attract well-known icons of the theatre world and foster emerging talent among composers, lyricists, and librettists. Each year, thousands of actors, directors, choreographers, and technicians aspire to come to Goodspeed to practice their craft. Among millions who know and love this art form–and those who appreciate its history and enduring appeal–Goodspeed is widely recognized as “The Home of the American Musical.”

Throughout the year, and intensively during the winter months, Goodspeed addresses issues unique to the field by offering innovative and highly-sought after programs through our Max Showalter Center for Education in Musical Theatre, including the celebrated Musical Theatre Institute providing programs for aspiring musical theatre professionals. The Arts Education Collaboration provides art-education programs for underserved Connecticut youth. The Festival of New Musicals features students from The Hartt School and the Boston Conservatory performing staged readings of three brand-new musicals, industry-related seminars, a symposium, and cabaret performances. Each winter, Goodspeed also hosts the Johnny Mercer Foundation Writers Colony that invites musical theatre writing teams to retreat from daily life for a four-week residency and concentrate solely on writing new musicals. In addition, Goodspeed serves as a resource for the preservation of the art form through our Scherer Library of Musical Theatre, the second most extensive musical theatre research library in the United States.

The Future We EnvisionThe Goodspeed campus will continue to serve as a thriving artist colony where the creative process informs the work on our stages and expanding educational programs. We aspire to serve as a safe haven where a singular commitment to discovery and innovation will enrich the field with the next generation of musical theatre artists.

• Rethinking, restoring, and producing works that are valued and significant in the history of musical theatre; • Developing new musical theatre works; • Nurturing the talents of new composers, lyricists, and librettists; • Encouraging and developing the talents of artists, technicians, and administrators; • Inspiring future audiences through education programs and outreach efforts; • Preserving and expanding the archival collections of its Scherer Library of Musical Theatre and making them available for professional use; • Maintaining the Goodspeed Opera House, a national historic landmark.

The Terris Theatre was inaugurated in 1984 by Goodspeed Musicals for the development of new musicals. The theatre is named in honor of the actress Norma Terris, star of Jerome Kern’s Show Boat and devoted patron and trustee of the Goodspeed Opera House during her later years.

Miss Terris began her stage career as a young vaudeville performer, which led to her first major role in George M. Cohan’s Little Nellie Kelly. She gained immortal acclaim as the creator of the roles of Magnolia and Kim in the original Florenz Ziegfeld 1927 production of Show Boat. After making two films for Fox, Married in Hollywood and Cameo Kirby, she starred for 10 seasons at the Municipal Opera Company in St. Louis.

Miss Terris first performed for Goodspeed audiences in the 1970 production of Little Mary Sunshine. She presided over the dedication of The Terris Theatre, and in 1987 she established the Norma Terris Fund to expand the talents of individuals and to foster the vitality, excellence, and diversity of musical theatre at The Terris Theatre. A beloved friend of Goodspeed Musicals, Norma Terris is remembered for enriching the art of musical theatre with her beautiful voice, fine acting, and generous spirit.

The Terris Theatre formerly was a factory built in the early 1900s for Susan Bates, Inc., which became one of the largest manufacturers of knitting needles and needlework accessories. In 1982, after relocating to a larger facility, Susan Bates, Inc., donated its abandoned factory in Chester to the Goodspeed Opera House Foundation. An intimate 200-seat performing space, The Terris Theatre was fully renovated, opening its doors on July 10, 1984 with the new musical Harrigan ‘n’ Hart.

COMING NEXT

Meet fun-loving jingle composer Harry. In modern Manhattan, his charmed life with girlfriend Louise, brother Paul and beloved Labrador Retriever (also Paul!) sparkles with the fizz of romantic comedies and the whimsy of MGM musicals. But will it all go flat when reality interrupts Harry’s tenderly orchestrated fantasia? A rich contemporary score explores the friction between romance and reality, bitter and sweet, high and low. Raise a glass to a musical serving something magical, moving and boldly new.

THIS FALL

Some of the most beloved storytellers in Connecticut history come alive for a yuletide gathering you won’t forget. Famed actor and local legend William Gillette leaves his castle on the Connecticut River to adapt Dickens’ holiday classic in the 1920s. Local heroes Mark Twain, Harriet Beecher Stowe and P.T. Barnum make spirited appearances opposite Gillette’s Scrooge in a highly theatrical twist on a family favorite. Custom-made for Goodspeed with all-original music, here’s a tuneful, heartfelt confection spiced with enough Nutmeg State flavor to sweeten your season.
