OVERVIEW LOCATION: Mountain View, CA INSTALLER: EI Solutions DATE COMPLETED: Summer 2007 PEAK CAPACITY: 1.6 MW NUMBER OF MODULES: 9,212 PRODUCT: Sharp 208-watt modules PROJECT By adopting a green platform to mitigate the effects of climate change, Google has made strides in becoming one of the most eco-friendly companies in the United States. Google chose to augment its utility power supply with solar energy by installing a solar electricity system on the campus of its Mountain View, California headquarters. With this system, Google has set an example for other corporations by utilizing the tremendous environmental and financial benefits of solar energy. SOLUTION Google turned to Sharp, to supply the modules for the 1.6-megawatt system, which is currently the largest commercial solar system in the United States. Sharp provided 9,212 of their 208-watt modules for the system, which was designed and installed by El Solutions of San Rafael, California. The system uses all available roof space on the eight office buildings where it was installed, as well as on two carports where employees can park and recharge their hybrid cars. With these efforts, Google is demonstrating that solar electricity is just like regular electricity, and can power anything—from computers and copiers, to servers and hybrid electric cars. projectBy adopting a green platform to mitigate the effects of climate change, Google has made strides in becoming one of the most eco-friendly companies in the United States.

“ Sharp shares a common goal with Google, which is to create products and technologies that benefit society and improve consumers’ lives.”

– Ron Kenedi, vice president, Solar Energy Solutions Group, Sharp

The system is designed to feed into Google’s overall operations, reducing the amount of electricity the company purchases from its local utility. pG&E granted Google financial incentives from its Self Generation Incentive program, further decreasing the overall cost of the solar installation. Google estimates that the system will pay itself off in just seven and a half years.

system benefits

• Sharp’s solar system provides 30% of Google’s peak electricity demand, generating enough electricity to power approximately 1,000 California homes.

• On a typical day, the system produces more than 6,000 kilowatt-hours.

• Due to the system, an estimated 3,637,627 pounds of harmful greenhouse gases will be prevented from entering the atmosphere each year.

• The carbon dioxide reduction over the next 30 years is equivalent to eliminating more than 128 million miles driven by cars.
